Very cool! Yeah, it would be great to see what you can do with the finer grits. I'd also like to hear what the grit equivalent of each of the ceramic stones is (in your opinion).

When the stone gets loaded, just use one of those white "hi-poly" (hi polymer) erasers. Pentel makes a really good one, and they're cheap, about $2 to $3 each. They often come in 3-packs at about $5 to $6. When stone loaded, just ease it like you would with pencil marks, with fairly firm pressure. It removes darn near all of the steel dust, even if deeply imbedded. I've NEVER had a ceramic stone get so loaded that it's nearly unusable. The erasers clean them really well.

If you know someone who is in the building trades, just ask them for any old part used tubes of silicon rubber they have lying about, take off the nozzle and leave them for a few months, cut the end off the tube and leave for a while more.Split the tube, you have a big cylinder of diamond/ceramic, stone cleaner. works as well as anything else. washing up liquid and water on a really foul stone. Really, none of this is entirely needed, for a very long time the red side of an india stone was as much as most households had for all purposes, and I can still get a wicked edge on a knife with one. I went a bit crazy and bought all sorts of stones, plates etc, most of them are lying fallow now.

I’ve had a love for knives for years and have recently been purchasing (probably too many) knives. Your expertise is very well represented and gives me confidence to just go for it. Brand names should seriously start looking into you for marketing purposes. I love how you share your knowledge in an inspirational way. In fact, I recently purchased a Spyderco Paramilitary 2 for myself and a Spyderco Manix for my stepfather based on your videos, even though you never name dropped either of those knives, and I couldn’t be happier! Although I'm a huge fan of ceramic water stones I do admit that this kind of whetstones are indeed very useful both for its results and for its easiness of use. They do not give as good results as a waterstone but they're a great choice for a quick and quality sharpening that does not require almost space, easy to transport, easy to maintain and non dependant of water. Thanks for the video.

Sorry to post on such an old video. I just seen this video just now, and had to chime in on the ceramic sharping stone. Before my father passed away, we used to make knives together. We made them both from blanks, and we actually made them from ingots by smelting and melting them. We always sharpened them with ceramic cylinders from inside pressure washers, because years ago, we found out that they sharpened blades better than most normal methods did. He for a living designed and built custom pressure washers, or rather as the proper term is power washers. I was an industrial welder, making anything from rail road train cars to forms to make concrete drainage tubes up to 30 feet in diameter. We learned the value of ceramic sharpening, and using leather for strops 20 years ago, we also used a barbers chair strap for our strop, and I still use it now. BTW, great video.

Hey man, I've been watching all your videos. im not as good as you are at sharpening but i have been using Simple Green all purpose cleaner instead of oil on my Arkansas stones and it seems to keep them very clean and i have a better edge when i use it instead of any oil. All I have to do is wipe the stone off after im done and it has literally no metal particles left afterwards. Might be something that could prove useful in cleaning your ceramic stone a little easier. Love the videos man!

I recently ordered the fine bench stone. Fine is my favourite grade for touch-ups following by a strop with .1 micron CBN emulsion. I previously bought the CBN/fine doublestuff stone... LOVE that little thing. Portable but versatile. As for cleaning the ceramic, I don't like fussing with soap/abrasive powders and water, so instead I use a rubber eraser. Gets most of the steel out of the surface quickly and easily.

+outdoors55, It’s fine that Spyderco starts off at medium. There are plenty of cheap, low-grit stones out there for profiling if needed. The Spyderco options (medium, fine, and ultra-fine) sound like a great and relatively affordable way to go. I say affordable given their durability if treated with care. Great find!

I have this stone, along with their fine and extra-fine benchstones, plus two Spyderco Sharpmakers (an original one from the early eighties, plus another one I bought a couple of years ago), plus Spyderco ceramic "files". I also have lots of waterstones, diamond stones, and various jigs. If I was on a destert island and could have only one stone with me, it would be this one. It's slow to reprofile a damaged blade, but for sharpening it's great. For kitchen knives and EDC knives used for opening cardboard boxes and mail, this stone leaves a perfect "tooth" on the blade for those tasks. I only wish they made this stone in a larger size for my hand plane blades. A pink ink eraser from an office supply store also works to clean this stone.

I have the set and I definitely like/use the Medium grit the least. How quickly it loads up is definitely one of the main reasons - I actually soak it like a waterstone prior to use to hold water on the surface better, which helps a bit with the loading. If I had to recommend someone with just one stone, it'd actually be the Fine grit. Both the Fine and Ultra Fine doesn't load as nearly as much as the Med. I typically cleaned them with a Mr. Clean Magic Eraser, but I should give the scotchbrite pads a go. I recently got a DMT stone to handle the lower grit tasks, but I feel the Atoma diamond plates from Japan might be the best way to go.

BKF has been my go to for cleaning my Shun ceramic rod sharpener. I saw somewhere that muriatic acid will help clear away steel particles that clog up ceramic or diamond sharpening surfaces, so maybe that's appropriate for a deep clean every few months with heavy use? I'd research its interactions more before using though, and recommended dilution ratios when handling it for those purposes.

I've purchased this stone, the Spyderco Medium, but it's slightly taller in just one corner. It doesn't seem to affect it if I flip it over though. I have the medium and ultra fine too, aside from loading they are great stones. The ultra fine produces a great finish ready to go, no strop necessary really. The UF is definitely a favourite and it gets used far more than the Choseras and Shaptons for a finisher on pocket knives. When I use these stones I keep a large pencil eraser next to me for during use cleaning...works very well on the ultra fine and ok on the medium but it’s slower.

I don’t own the spyderco medium benchstone but I do own the ultra fine. I use dawn and water on the stone, if I don’t it loads up very quickly. Also the stone had saw marks in it when I received it that will affect your edge, so I lapped it and finished at 3000 grit wet dry sandpaper and it’s as smooth as glass, it provides an excellent edge and has no problems with super steels such as cpm m4

I wanted to ask you: So far I only have a 1000 and a 3000 grit whet stone (and a strop), so I was considering buying something coarser. I was thinking about getting the DMT Dia-Sharp Fine Grit that you recommended, but could not find any information on what grit "fine" correlates to. Would it be a good addition to my current setup or do I still need something coarser? Thanks again for your support! It's scary to get into knife sharpening, but it's also kinda meditative and fun :)

I have four grits of rigid 2.5" x 10" diamond plate. I use the medium and go to fine in the shop as I hone HSS and carbide edges frequently. I mostly cut industrial plastics. I seldom use coarse or super fine, except when rejuvenating friends' neglected kitchen cutlery, using the former, and using the latter for finish honing scalpels for personal surgical procedures, heh, heh. I have worn the grit off the edges of my favorite, medium diamond plate. So I am interested in all things new in this realm. Thanks for the post.

Nice! I clean houses for a living. Have you ever tried one of those mr muscle miracle erasers to clean a stone? They are amazing little sponges (you can get knock off ones at dollar tree). The reason I mention it is I wonder if the scotch bright pad is scratching the stone, degrading it some over time. Probably not, but just a thought. I got to get me one of those stones! Thanks!!!

Since you are having problems with the load up you should use the stones wet, I use dawn and water and it provides great results. Trying to clean it after it loads up is a giant pain in the ass

I've heard enough good things about these now that I think I'll go ahead and get one, or two ! 😊 I'm used to using a diamond stone so the transition shouldn't be too bad. Thanks for sharing and take care. 👍

Try Bar keepers helper or Comet cleanser with your 3 M scotch brite scrubby on the medium Spyderco and you’ll be very happy with the results, been doing it for 20 plus years.

Good video... I need more practice free hand. This ease of use factor may help me get more time on the stone. The diamond plates are such a production to setup over my sink that I usually just skip it. Thank you for the video. : )

I watched this video, then went to look at other Spyderco stones. Ended up buying the smaller two sided med/fin stone Spyderco offers. I'm not a fan of their knives. just personal preference over aesthetics, but I am loving this little stone!

I may get one. I like things that last. And it doesn’t dish out, so that means i can get consistent angoos. I have cheap diamond stones. But they wear out pretty fast.

I like to use soapy water , even with ceramic it prevents loading and helps with staying on apex.

I have the fine, medium , and extrafine ( surfaced one). I think the extra fine mostly unneeded and wouldn't buy it again. The fine works good enough. White stones are closed cell , but the medium is more open. I would advise against using steel wool or such to clean it , as metal particles can become embedded in it and possibly cause scratches. Pumice hand cleaner (GoJo)cleans them perfectly. Note: Some of my Spyderco's are not perfectly flat , but close. I also de-burred the edges on them with a coarse diamond stone. They have micro-ridges from the factory. Great stones for daily maintenance.

I've had one now 15 or so years and stills works fine and is still flat. All my other stones are Arkansas oil stones. They are still flat too. I honestly can't see myself buying a stone that wears out and always needs to be flattened. Makes a lifetime tool a consumable item that one needs to replace over time. I am glad I got my translucent Arkansas stone a long time ago because now those things are outrageous in price.

Love your vids bud been a fan for a while. Just wanted to give a tip on cleaning stones. My Arkansas and ceramic stones clean up great using simple green and water mix in a heated ultra sonic cleaner. I got a cheap one from harbor freight. Ultrasonic bath loosens the gunk then a little wipe with a scotch brite or toothbrush and good to go. Also degreases oil stones.

I've had good luck cleaning Spyderco stones using a white Staedler type eraser. It literally erases the steel from the stone like soft pencil lead off good paper.

I did a double-take, thinking I was watching the same video. You obviously like this stone, having made two videos in a week on it! If you like ceramics and you think you might like something finer, check out "sintered ruby." The most common one is the 3k variety, which is very, very fine. This is what I usually shave off of, with just a few strops on a bare strop, after. It's almost the same thing as white or brown ceramics, which is to say it's a sintered aluminum oxide, but it has a pinch of chromium oxide added. This gives it unique properties of a bimodal crystal size distribution (makes it cut more efficiently for the finish) and it makes it very tough and fracture resistant. 1. It does not load up like the Spyderco white/brown ceramics. Just use a little oil or soapy water, and the grit will wipe right off. 2. It will actually last forever. If/when you drop it onto concrete, you will chip the concrete. 3. It is fairly cheap. It was patented by a German company, but the patent expired in 2013, or so. It used to be very expensive and largely used for cleaning dies and molds for industrial use. You might like to buy a cheap diamond plate of 600-800 grit to round over the corners and sharp edges. Your straight blades and recurves will thank you. Your concrete and hardwood floors will appreciate it, too.
