This city in Sweden surprised us! (Gothenburg is not boring!) 🇸🇪

First impressions of Gothenburg (Göteborg), Sweden.
Gothenburg is Sweden's second biggest city. But to be honest, we didn't expect anything out of the city. The reason we came was to watch the Frölunda HC hockey match, and thought the city itself would be boring.
But we were surprised to find how lively and vibrant the city was. We were delighted to walk around the city centre, and had Swedish fika at the Haga district.

    5:50 those are called "landshövdingehus" - "governor houses". One governor of then Gothenburg and Bohus county in the 1800s banned houses in the city from being built entirely of wood. The first floor had to be in stone, to reduce the risk of fires spreading.

  • @Fnoffen

    @Fnoffen

    Partially true. The Governor made a rule that one may only build two stories with wood. And so people started building one or more stone stories and then adding thw two wooden ones a a sort of rule bend. And since it came about due to the Governors decree, the style of building got that name.

The French supporting the revolutionaries in the US versus the Brits, also supporting the Yanks in the civil war while the Brits supported the South (which was kind of an "oof" moment, these days), because the Brits were still salty about losing the revolutionary war. :P Oh, and Normands invading Britain during the middle ages - twice actually, as I recall... lol Also, the expression "pardon the French", used to liken French language with swearing, etc. So fair amount of animosity there, historically... :) Of course, nobody cares much about any of that anymore. Or at least as long as we have food on our table, roofs over our heads and smartphones to scroll on. Take all that away though, and we'll likely show our true colors yet again. ;)

It was a strategic place as it at the time was the only window to the west that Sweden had, the west coast of what is now Sweden was Danish, except for a narrow corridor mayby 30-40 km wide around Gothenburg. As Sweden and Denmark hold the world record for number of wars fought between two countries, it makes perfect sense to expect an attack and fortify the city accordingly!

    Göteborg isn’t that young if one consider it’s predecessor Lödöse. Lödöse is older than Stockholm.

    2:10 Some trains in Sweden are in fact wider than in most of Europe. For example, Germany's ICE trains are 2.95 meters wide while our X2000 trains are 3.05 meters wide so about 10 cm wider. I don't know if the one that you travelled on (X74) is that wide though.

    That McDonald's at Stockholm Central Station is probably the filthiest and most unpleasant McDonald's in the entire world and yes the station smells like piss in some parts. Glad you are enjoying my country!

Adored world over and especially in Japan where the cherry blossom - sakura - season is celebrated and they have forecasts every year where and when the blossoms come up! You have a lovely cherry blossom park in Vancouver too - and one woud suspect in Toronto also!

    I think a cinnamon bun is a bit like pizza- even when it’s bad, it’s still pretty good. So, maybe I am not a cinnamon bun connoiseur just yet, but the one we tried in the video was still pretty good 👍😅

    I hope the overall volume on everything and everyone around you where satisfying? you could say it´s part of our culture not to be so loud and expressive, especially on trains/busses and out on cafes, ofc there are exceptions. ive heard that is one of the really big diffrences between the US and Sweden (might be wrong tho).

    I never heard the Goth joke before :) to us is just an easy English-ification we provide to let foreigners not try to bother butchering Göteborg. The other Skansen/Castle, Skansen Lejonet/The Lion is said to have been under the command Emerentia Pauli, wife of the deceased commander, where she successfully commanded the defense against the Danes until the Swedish army reinforced them. Basically the saying goes her dying husband knew his military staff was incompetent and made her temporary commander and the entire defense went “sure she’s giving orders and clearly knows what to do, hell yeah we’ll follow orders from a civilian if it means we will survive this occupation!”… also said drunk invaders were found in the wine cellar, who were so drunk they had missed that the rest of the danish army retreated. The castles looks tiny from afar but if you visit them when they are open, they are surprisingly large on the inside.

    💯 on point about the coffee cup. Just not the same in a glass. Tends to be how specifically lattes are served in some places. I've also seen americanos served this way.
