Last summer I realized that if I was planning to run my sheep farm single-handed, I would need a handling system that would allow me to do that. My Dorper Sheep max out at 150-160lb for the ewes and the rams are close to 200lb. The size of my sheep and the growth of my flock prevented me from running health maintenance without 2-4 volunteers to help me. By the end of summer 1/2 of those volunteers told me they were graduating high school and moving on with life. AKA: they didn’t want to wrestle with sheep anymore… haha! It sounds humorous, but there were probably more internal tears than laughter at that announcement. I realized I would either have to downsize my flock to a number I could manually work (probably 15 ewes) or invest in a handling system for my sheep. I decided to approach buying a sheep handling system incrementally and I began fundraising. This winter I was able to raise just about enough money for the sheep tilt table and contacted Lakeland about theirs. When I reached out to Lakeland they responded saying they wanted to support my farm by sending the complete sheep and goat handling package for about the price of a tilt table!
Thank you for being a part of this journey,

It appears to me the tears inside you when your volunteers said they were leaving were a Blessing. HE turned it into a Blessing. Because you Love HIM. All the Glory to GOD!!! This made my day!!!

As an avid do-it-yourselfer, I have always said: forget diamonds. Leverage is a girl's best friend. Good equipment can turn a two or three person job into a one person job. Awesome investment both for you and Lakeland, I am glad they recognize that you are going places. Keep it up!

Faith starts with asking. I appreciate your ability to analyze the figures. My brain hurts with numbers, not words. My wife loves numbers, we share the words. Love the tilt table. Good Pavlovian technique of letting the sheep walk through the system. Psalms 23 method. Walking the valley…

What a blessing! And how wise of you to wait to make big capital investments until you actually needed them. Also, when you were kids, did Ruth take the box your presents came in at Christmas and play with it? That part was hilarious.

Good buy. We're blessed to be able to borrow an old mobile handling system from one of the best neighbors anybody's ever had. I can't imagine shepherding without it. We don't have a turn table, but our flock doesn't need one.

Chicken tractor idea is great....remove most of the bottom boards so chickens can graze, just leave 1 or so for bracing.
That's awsome. Props to Lakeland for helping out. That mean now you have a sponsorship lol 😉 I bought a setup a year after having sheep. It was the best money spent. I can now handle all on my own.

What a great video and what a great deal from Lakeland Farm. It goes to show that if you do things right and tell people how they can do things right (helping others) then others will help you. I am all in favour of a barter system as it really works. If you help some one that person can help someone else and so on and so forth. This system works so well that the only one that looses out is the tax man as no cash passes hands so no tax paid on anything. I call that a win win situation. Thanks for posting
I wouldn’t have known about Lakeland but for your endorsement. You’ll be getting more bonuses from them in the future!

Really really well done Shepherdess. I don’t want to make myself sound old but young people these days…usually aren’t doi by this. Delighted to see you working for your goals and being rewarded without asking for a hand out. Great example.
As always, the "box" is more exciting than the contents. LOL! Seriously, congratulations on the new handling system! It is well deserved! Even though you raise sheep and I raise goats, I find you have a lot of good, practical information. I rarely miss one of your videos since I discovered your channel. I have come to the same conclusion with my operation, I need a handling system. However, I will be building my own. I do have a used tilt table that I discovered was not really designed for goats after I bought it. I am hoping, with a little modification, I can get it to where it will work for me. The rest of my system I will have to build myself.

I was introduced to the sweeper gate idea by local cowboys about fifteen years ago. It's a great system for livestock and thankful for implementing it every time I use it. I bought a calf table at auction after suffering doing hoof trimming manually on 30 head last year. Haven't used it yet but I am hopeful it will be an improvement. Always looking to improve on a one person operation

This is great to see. My wife and I are getting older and finally realized we can’t handle the 260lb sheep the way we used to just a few years ago. It’s time! We got on line with Lakeland and ordered the system that you ordered..and added a gate and a three way separator. We have also been considering a you tube channel…because…well…why not if it provides and opportunity to share Jesus!? Besides that we think that our sheep are wonderful and fun and lovely and think other people will think so as well! We are adding bees, just added chickens and are looking into a rabbit operation since rabbit is in high demand in our area but there is virtually no supply!

What is that sheep-handling seat you use with your helpers in the "before" videos called? It seems like a great tool for someone who can lift/carry their sheep by themselves to work with alone.
@theShepherdess
2 жыл бұрын
Yes! It’s called a deck chair. Be careful if your ewes are heavier and have recently given birth (120lb or more). The deck chair was causing some concerning bulge to come out their back end. (😬😬 If you email me I’ll explain exactly what was happening, but you probably get the idea).

Do you have hoof rot? why do you need to trim hooves?
@theShepherdess
2 жыл бұрын
It’s a preventative measure against hoof rot. We trim and soak once a year. If we didn’t it would likely be a HUGE issue for us. 47” rain annually and no rocky terrain makes for fast build up of overgrowth and pockets for harboring bacteria. Hope this helps!

Lol… the idea of shepherd-less sheep is an unfortunate modern myth. All good flocks need a little TLC now and again. 😉😉
I'm assuming these animals are your livelyhood. It's a shame in this day in America that finances are so tight that to make a living you had to do this. I see many homesteaders raising pigs and I say to myself how can this be profitable. All the feed and maintenance and equipment seems to make the whole operation unprofitable. People don't appreciate what goes into that meat and for that matter the veggies we eat. Only complaints. I invite people to grow a bean or a chicken or a tomato and they'll get an appreciation of the work that goes into the food on their table. Its a lot of work. Ask me how I know. God bless
