This canal keeps surprising us | narrowboat vlog
It's the day after we moored up outside Blisworth tunnel and we're already on the move. Stoke Bruerne is a pretty famous canal village and it was beautiful and serene, but the locks were hard work. A couple of them I wasn't sure I'd be able to get open! But we got there in the end.
The most exciting thing was definitely casually cruising past a major bit of Andrew's family boating history. I know people say this all the time on KZread - but we REALLY didn't expect this (not clickbait).
Eventually we passed through Cosgrove (SO PRETTY), over an aqueduct, and moored up in Wolverton (nervous because no one else is around).

One lock a mile Cruise a short while Then toil again. The clouds are grey Leaves' contrast is gay! But greens also remain Bricks also shine bright But the overall light Like the boat is grey There are migrating birds There are not many words A glass of Cider'd be gay! Spotters saw "Land's End" Mail cars shine red All locks are done now Rest lays ahead Crew's "Milton Keen-O" The end "is history!" - Wow! I stopped this after around minute 19. However, I still feel in a way poetically inspired by the whole video! Thanks!

Oh in the name of cliffhangers…
I cant believe anyone is criticizing you guys for having a cider. You deserve a few after a long days boating and its important to support the lovely local pubs on route. My favourite scenes are when you are at the pub. Don't listen to the cider haters.

In 2000, I stayed in Wolverton for an internship (of all places...), and I remember passing those derelict buildings next to the canal on my way to work daily. I took so many pictures of them back then. Also, lovely vlog as usual, Kris ❤

Seeing as it came up again, i was getting into a bit of if random genealogy of the canal folks, and long story short, i have a copy of Andrew's dad's obituary from Waterways World magazine. It has a cool line in it about him being known for fishing out windlasses with a magnet, which came up in the vlog last week. Anyway, let me know if you'd like me to send it to you

Haha I must defend poor Andrew, it was my choice to split the lock labour like this, not his! At this stage I didn’t feel confident about steering into wide locks on my own yet, I’m fine with it now! And he’s getting plenty of exercise 😂
Hi Kris and Andrew. One thing that may be helpful for you when you are trying to operate some of the extremely heavy or awkward Lock gates is something called a Lock Pole or Lock Oar ( it’s not really just a pole or a oar but it’s shaped somewhat like a Oar ),basically it’s a Stout/strong piece of Timber that has a bladed end ( but not thin like a oar,it’s quite substantial ),a hefty ( but not heavy shaft ) and on the end you have a Handle, they have Rope tied to them so you can carry them on your back or over your shoulder. You use them by placing the Bladed end on the brickwork that the CRT has kindly put down on the locks for foot purchase and you put the shaft against the lock beam and use the handle to push/lever the Lock gate. I worked on the Canals years ago for CRT ( I was a crane driver ) and a old lock keeper said originally they would use a Metal spiked bar but they were too heavy for the ladies to carry around so someone developed the Lock Oar ( The original old locks didn’t have the brickwork of today, they had spike holes in the towpath where the gates are ). Some Lock gates would have a recess cut into the bottom of the Lock Beam so the Spike bar wouldn’t slip and there were Holes in the huge Flagstones that were used instead of the Brickwork of Today, some Lock Gates would have a Metal fitting in the end of the beam ( like a saddle ) so the Spike bar could be used from either direction. Eventually Proper Brickwork was used and the Spike bar caused damage and of course the Ladies were more involved with the Day to day running of opening and closing the lock but as I mentioned before a Lady spoke to her Man and asked for something a bit lighter and easier to carry ( probably because she was trying to hold the Baby as well ? ) and then the Lock Oar was developed ( and yes you can use them one handed and with ease ),they were just stored away on top of the boat . Sorry if my explanation isn’t the best but it’s not the easiest of things to describe 🤷♂️. Another Great Video ❤

Well I would rather do a flight of wine or beer than a flight of locks! Lol. You’re lucky to have worn your boots as I don’t think that one lock would have budged. Never thought about how the height of the water would affect the opening and closing of the locks. Loved the ornamental bridge and how cool was seeing the tug(?) that Andrew’s father drove and Goldeneye! Love me some James Bond! Question… what’s with the “Elderly duck crossing “ signs?? Is it a joke? If not, how do they know they’re elderly. See you next time. Be well.🪶

Right now I’m reading Caledonian Road by Andrew O’Hagan which is fantastic - a state of the nation with an epic cast of characters, set in London of course. His previous novel Mayflies was also tremendous - heartwrenching story about male friendship set over two eras, the late 80s and now. Also really enjoyed the new David Nichols on audiobook recently, very wholesome modern love story. What about you?

Oh yay! Thank you!
Well that is new to me .Boat spotters ?
Beautiful cinematography, as ever 😊 I wonder, with high water overflowing the gates, whether it's ever impossible to go down a lock because it can't empty. Any idea why it was so high ? 😮 the rope wear on the iron rubbing strips on bridge 58. Rope vs iron. Rope wins.
@krisatomic
22 күн бұрын
Usually you can go down, but if the water is very high at the top, it can keep coming in over the top gate and then you can’t get out at the bottom. So you can get stuck in a lock for a bit until things equalise. At stoke bruerne I believe they actually have a pump at the bottom lock level to bring water back up to the top to keep things more or less even!

Yes, on a normally busy canal it’s always a bit suspicious when there aren’t any moored boats in an area. It’s like - does everyone else know something about this spot that we don’t?! 😅
The new youtube page layout is completely unnacceptable - eats data loading unwanted content. Regrettably, I am unsubscribing from all youtube channels. Sadly content providers are now going to suffer losses. Sorry folks. Best wishes
