great videos - love the farming the alps series
The video about the Brown Swiss cattle breed. kzread.info/dash/bejne/nZmau7R_e73Lf5s.html
When I was young on my uncles farm I could care less about the hay… now I’m riveted to your every word ! The cows are beautiful!
the self loading wagon does compress the hay a little, some areas in Montana and other Ranching area of states still do hay stacking. I am friends with someone in Montana and when he still farmed most of his hay was stacked loose with a Farmhand loader stacker and he told me that loose hay in stacks didn't spoil then stacked hay bales. When we still farmed in Switzerland we lived near Altenklingen Castle (ya might have to check a swiss map where that is) we did loose hay as long as I can remember but we used a hay blower. Awesome video keep em comin'
Got some of the coffee, it's really good. ✌️

@@AmericameetsSwitzerland Kalberweidli, it's good.
Great videos! My aunt lives in the Valais Alps. Sometimes she helps out a local farmer. The field there is so steep and rocky that they cannot work with machines. They do a lot of it by hand with a scythe and a pitchfork.
kind of ironic that wet hay has risk of combusting. The whole solar drying system is pretty neat!
Another important reason for the wide spread use of loose hay is the superior quality (when ventilated during storing) over bales. Taking in the hay when it's not completely dry preserves nutrients and vitamins because it hasn't been exposed to sun light (and UV radiation) for as long. Hay for bales is completely sun dried and lower in quality. That's especially important if a farm sells their milk to cheese makers. Their not allowed to use silage of any kind (grass or corn) as feed and thus depend on the highest quality hay.
Hello, really enjoying your videos. I would love to visit Switzerland and help a farmer hay for a couple weeks. I have a farm in New Hampshire where we do round bales. I also spied behind you that it appears you might be from New Hampshire too! Wondering where at? 😊

Very cool, there aren't so many farms in NH anymore. I grew up near Keene, but moved out of the state when I was 19. I still go back and visit one a year or so. Where are you in NH?

@AmericameetsSwitzerland I'm in Jefferson. I tell most people "where Santa's Village is" and most people know then exactly where we are. We have a small former dairy farm that's been in my family for over three generations now and we are working on establishing a micro dairy for direct to consumer sales. I've always been interested in the way European farms do things. One on my bucket list is to help hay in the alps someday even just to help out on a vacation. I love the slope mower. I really wanted a Brielmaier and thought it would be a great way to stay in shape during hay season until I found out how much they cost! 😪 Thanks for making these videos!

I've heard that at least some of the amish community originated in switzerland. This is something I really want to eventually make a video about.

@@ma6netho it's exactly the meaning in Swiss. Guess eco, öko have the same root. Heu and hay look similar. Cheers!
