This Camera Changes EVERYTHING - Olympus EM-1 Mark ii

I took my Olympus EM-1 Mark ii out for the first time to see how the camera performed. While the shoot ended up being a little all over the place due to the weather, I had fun using the camera!

I changed from a D500 and D7200 to the Em1 Mk iii back in 2020, haven't looked back, now have the OM-1 as well, mainly shoot Insects and birds plus sports and a bit of landscape. The quality of the gear and lens is fantastic. The auto focus is so quick and accurate it just left my Nikons behind ! Cheers from New Zealand

@@ChrisBaitson Hey Chris, the 12-100 F4 is mostly rated as a very good lens, but ist a little big and heavy if you imagine that we are in M43 ;) To me that is the reason why I am using the 12-40mm and for longer shots another lens. What you should use there, I cannot say, but I would think about, if the size and weight is a point to you, or not. If not, the 12-100 maybe is a very good lens, if, maybe the 40-150 F4 Pro is as an additional lens more interessting to you ;) However, the E-M1 Mk II I also bought this year, as an upgrade for my also sill present E-M1 Mk I ;) Jeah, there is a little more here and there, but, I do not feel that extreme difference between; but that maybe is the best of it; I will use both and have two bodies... And with a 12-45 F4 the E-M1 I is getting mor lighter and a little smaler in the combination that the E-M1 II with the 12-40, so that I also can have a chose for Days, where i would like to stay small and light ;) ... But, the most important point is also teh point I would like to which to you: Have as much fun as possible with the camera ;)

I just upgraded from an EM-1 mk 11 to a new OM-1. The newer camera has some cute tricks but for most of my subjects (birds and wildlife) the keeper rate is not much higher. I think the OM-D EM1 mk 11 is one of those "sweet spot" cameras where the manufacturers balanced everything just right. I'll be my second shooter for years into the future.

The rubber on the grip coming away isn't unusual on the EM1ii. I got my EM1ii in 2019, used, but in like new condition. About 18 months or so into having it, mine did the same, rubber started coming away by the grip. Easy to sort if you're feeling brave with careful application of super glue. Obviously, getting the camera with the rubber coming away when I wasn't put in the listing on mpb, getting an exchange is definitely the right thing to do, but further down the line if/when it starts to come away, it's an easy fix. Enjoy your Olympus, superb camera, and still holds up well even now in 2023, very much ahead of its time when it was released. It's my go to over my Canon 5D and 6D, the Olympus is simply a great all rounder.

I’ve read a lot of forum posts regarding the grip, I think you’re right, maybe it’s a design flaw with it? Hopefully I can get a year or two out of it before it goes. I’m glad MPB didn’t cause too much of a fuss with replacement though.

I would advise not to use superglue. It has the habit or melting a lot of things in it's path. Use something like Gorilla glue. It takes longer to set but is easily rectified if you kind of overdo it, as it is water based. I make and repair musical instruments in my own collection and have found that superglue is destructive and difficult to do repairs at a later date. For a lot of repairs and fretting instruments I still use old fashioned hide glue as it is safe and easy for future repairers to deal with. The same goes for a lot of things that we attempt to repair today. For a lot of what we need to repair we don't need superglue.

It takes a little setting up for how many times you want to see the exposure develop but I usually set an 8 minute time with I think 30 second previews. I never need 8 minutes but use it as a back stop as I found if I set it for 2 minutes I often want a bit more. Honestly it’s wicked to use, watching the image develop with the histogram moving from left to right until you decide the image is exposed how you want it is just mint.

@@DessieTots I was quite antsy due to the overwhelmingly positive MPB reviews, which looked a bit fishy to me. And when their reviews are bad, they're REAL bad. I asked around at local photo stores and chains and the highest offer I got for my D800 was 180,- Euros and 65,- Euros for my D90. They wouldn't even buy the 4 lenses that I also wanted to sell. One made a pity offer of 40,- Euros, 10,- for each lens. MPB offered 300,- (D800) and 90,- (D90) as well as 148,- for the lenses. So I took the leap. Upon receipt, they even INCREASED and offered 325,- for the D800 and 100,- for the D90. It's not a huge amount, but every bit is welcome of course. I chose an E-M1 MkII to trade in and for that too, MPB had the best offer. They asked 519,- for one in Excellent condition where on the pictures I couldn't see any significant wear marks. The local shops had one with clearly visible scuffs and abrasion and wanted at least 579,- for it. Now of course I can't wait for it to arrive, but so far my dealings with MPB have been flawless. Fingers crossed...

Boy @bobn1955, you do have a point, but are we a bit salty? @ChrisBaitson you indeed forgot to mention HOW that camera changed everything for you. And indeed it would have been nice to mention if the shots were SOOC or edited. Maybe for the next one?

I want to thank you for showing me that the bar for stupidity on KZread's comments could in fact get lower. You obviously have no clue how social media works. This is his PERSONAL channel, his views, his experiences. You can take from that what you will, but the change only has to impact him. We're only along for that journey.
