This Camera Changed My Mind About Micro Four Thirds | Olympus EM1 Mark ii

I took my Olympus EM1 Mark ii to Whitby to photograph the piers at Sunrise. This micro four thirds camera has convinced me once and for all that the format does all I need.

If you're going to get up early, head out, and spend time taking photos you think are good, you've got to take those photos back home and give them the care in editing that they deserve (as you pointed out). Good luck taking time to refine those skills. 😀

Nice session and a good set of well composed pics. Take your time and never forget that digital is a blessing. Those who remember film’s frame counters know exactly how spoiled we are today.

Hi Chris, new subscriber here. I am about to buy into Olympus for the first time with this camera. In 2022 my business failed, and I had to sell all my photography gear to pay rent. Used to shoot on Nikon and Fujifilm. Haven't had a camera since, but I'm going to take a small leap of faith with this system, and try to get this model as it is quite cheap now. You also do the same thing I do sometimes, and think of a word to say in different ways and end up saying both at the same time. At 13:08 you say, "it'd be quinda nice", where "quite" and "kinda" mixed together, you made me feel not so alone in the world 😂😂

My mft evolution started with the EM10 ii, then the EM5 ii, and now the EM1X. I still have the 5 mk ii but my EM1X is my main and I am completely satisfied. I have always shot with M.Zuiko lenses but I just recently picked up the Sigma 16mm f1.4 and I am completely swooned. That lens is amazing.

If I were to ever step foot outside of mft it would strictly be the Lumix S5 series or S1. Otherwise I am here to stay.

@@corykphotographyi agree ! I also used the EM10 Iii, the EM5ii, the EM1 ii and finally bought the Panasonic S5 ii. This is my first fullframe & it is fantastic. But my EM1 ii is still always with me in my bag & i have to fight against myself to use the S5 at first. Most of the time is loose my fight 😂

Excellent photography in context. Thank you Google. To recognize this tradition and the town’s important whaling history, a whale bone arch was erected on Whitby’s West Cliff in 1853. The archway frames a view of the town’s quaint cottages and cobbled streets as well as the ruins of the medeival Whitby Abbey, located across the bay on the East Cliff. (The famous 199 steps leading up to the gothic abbey inspired the setting for Bram Stoker’s Dracula.) Standing atop the hill under the 15-foot arch backdropped by the abbey is a photo opp few visitors to Whitby can resist. Next to the arch is the town’s other claim to fame a statue (aside from its fish and chips): a statue of the explorer Captain Cook, who learned seamanship as an apprentice here in Whitby.

One thing that helped my post processing was realising contrast isn’t just one slider it’s colour, saturation and hue also. So I watched some videos on colour theory, and it gave a lot of my images a new lease of life. Lately I’m making notes on my phone about how certain shots make me feel at the time so I can try to use edits to convey those emotions. Though that last one is very definitely a WIP Fair play to you for being open about your weaknesses (even if it’s just your own perception). EM1 Mk II still tempts, when I go home to Ireland will probably shoot Rugby again so it’s a toss up between that and the G9, though the GH5 is no slouch in sports.

I know next to nothing about Micro 4/3 but yours and a couple months of others give me food for thought. Never been to Whitby, yet, should have gone to the Goth Festival a couple of times for Street Portraits and some Candid shots but life got in the way as they say but a will likely go at some point this year as we’ve just bought a nice tent as my Medical Travel Insurance is way too high to go abroad this year, probably next year too so may price up for the October Goth Weekend. P.S. I’m not a Goth but they make great subjects for photos, same Steampunk, funny how their get together is in Whitby too.

Yes, 4/3 certainly has its place. I have one 4/3 camera, 2x APSC, 1x ff Sony a7rii, and my film cameras: 35mm up to 8x10inch. Yes, 4/3 has its place, however, it can never replace the other equipment. 😶

Nicely done! Must admit tempted to pick up a reconditioned Mk3; OM has on for 44% off, not much more that a used MkII here. In truth either would more than meet my needs, though would prefer something a bit smaller for my uses. Still tempting! Enjoy your videos including how you set up your photos!

When I edit I slide the contrast and sharpness back a bit … especially on Olympus since they are sharpened straight out of camera.

Do you use the inbuilt live nd filter ? Also have you shot such slow shutters handheld as hear the om1 great for up to 8 seconds exposure hand held which sounds amazing and potentially leave the tripod

If I was to get into Micro 4/3 (truthfully not interested at all because I think APS-C is a bare minimum for low light and noise performance) I would get the OM-1. Stacked sensor, not that expensive in comparison to other pro cameras, and I have a classic 35mm film OM-1, having its younger digital brother would be kinda cool.

All I will say is I have an e-m5 mk2, 14-42. 40-150, 25mm f1.7 and 18mm f2.8 Sigma. Think I'm ok for range. My Canon gear will fund a mk3 and a 60mm macro...

Doesn't the Olympus have a Live ND feature? I'm not sure, but I think it should negate the need for physical ND filters (if it's a couple of stops). I could be completely misunderstanding what Live ND does.

Not sure if the 1.2 has it. The 1.3, the OM-1 and the OM-5 have LiveND. It can give a strange appearance for moving clouds, but I like it for waves when I want to keep a little bit of detail. LiveND is stacking several images in camera and this can lead to some unwanted effects in comparison to a real ND filter, but I like to play around and see if I like what I get before I bother to get out the filters... LiveComposite can give a similar effect to waves, worth a try if your camera doesn't have LiveND.

The mkii doesn't and in the 1.3 its only a few stops. I think on the OM1 its either 4 or 6 stops so becoming more useful.
