I spent the past two years creating my first photography book titled 'Loft Law. The Last of New York City's Original Artist Lofts' about artists living under the protection of the Loft Law. The law, enacted in 1982, granted protection and rent stabilization to thousands of artists who were living illegally in commercial and manufacturing zoned lofts in neighborhoods like Soho, Tribeca, and the Bowery after the manufacturing industry predominantly left Manhattan. I photographed and interviewed over 75 artists who are still living in these incredible lofts to this day. The photographs explore some of the most unique beautiful, and hidden artist studios across New York City. The book includes writing and personal stories from the incredible group of artists featured in the book.
Curtis Mitchell is an artist that has been creating works in Brooklyn since 1984. His work has been exhibited at MoMa PS1, the New Museum, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, and more. To see Curtis Mitchell's work or inquire for sales, please visit: curtismitchellart.com/

Yes really wonderful use of natural light in indoor spaces. I wanted to ask - how to you achieve those? Metering for the shadows?
Yes it IS a beautiful space !
Amazing space. An artist dream. I’ve always wanted to live and paint and create in a space like this. I’m so jealous but glad an artist is using this incredible space to live true to form as a creative human being

Thank you for getting a copy! More videos soon
This has been such a wonderful series, and I can't wait to see more. I'll be picking up that book for sure. Thank you for documenting these people. Even though this era is coming to a close, by capturing these stories, it will inspire future artists to create a culture for themselves, just as they did. We need our own spaces. Cheers~

Did he eventually buy the place and if so, how much was it? So amazing..thanks for sharing this. Great work
For some reason, or maybe no reason, this sounds like an exciting project to me.
brilliant
Girl, could I make paintings, clothing collections, and write books in this space! Such an inspiration, especially as I think about how much this space would cost today!
I am in Medellín, Colombia. There is a ebook versión?
❤
Leaky roof and cold as shit....takes me back to my own time in a loft many years ago. No thanks. Never understood chilled to the bone until I lived there, never really warmed up. Much prefer my much smaller heated apartment. At least I can function.
How can i buy your book in Europe?
I want this book but postage to my country is very high :(
so cool

Which ice cream factory? My dad worked as a Diesel mechanic for Priscilla Ice cream in Red hook. I am enjoying this!
No way around it, I contact you and need this work, which provides a great background for deeper discourse. No matter where art is or is created, the question of existence is present. Your work makes this part visible and resolves a dichotomy that connects art with aesthetics and haptics back to the actual reference.
Did he end up buying it from the landlord is he still renting?
