We need a series like this! *"ARRANGEMENT IS MAGIC"* 😄
Ah great example of contrast is the Chorus of Attention (Charlie Puth), the songs builds up and after the prechorus, there is just bass and drums
I’ve always produced like this since I started my first beat in 1995. Good job on this!
I want to try this method: I'll use youtube to mp3 to download my favorite songs, then drag the file into my DAW, use markers to denote the song structure, and listen for which elements are coming in and out. Thank you as always for the videos, I learned tons!
Good point about how Tycho uses contrast. That's one of the reasons I'm a big Tycho fan. It's constantly evolving texturally. Rhythms, chord progressions, melodies, tones. It never sits still, yet moves naturally from one texture to the next, in far more dimensions than most other music in the genre. Tycho's Horizons is one of my favorites for contrast.
In Prog Metal it is also common to change the time signature. For example 3/4 in the verse vs 5/4 or 6/4 in the chorus, combined with open chords. This can have really cool and massive effects.
One of my favorite ways to use contrast is to sing an ascending melody over descending chords, though I think that's called contrary motion. It's still contrast in my book.

That sounds really cool... Do you have or know a video that shows that please?
@ChrisHardyWorld

@@andricishami2581 I did this at around the :49 mark of this song starting with the line "But I'm prepared, I'm on alert...". The vocals ascend as the chords descend. kzread.info/dash/bejne/rHVhp7dpiMbSnLg.html

For now you can stay Right here we will play Until somehow you can find A slightly different frame of mind Right here in my arms Away from all harm You'll be safe from all the flares Although I know you don't care Oohh... Oohh... Oohh... Oohh... You can lift your head up to the sky Take a deeper breath and give it time You can walk the path among the lines With your shattered frame of mind Withstand, you could always stay We can wait right here and play Until somehow you can find A slightly better frame of mind

Reminds me of a track off the Nick Cave / Warren Ellis Assassination of Jesse James soundtrack
In magic you can create things either by alignment or contrast. So yes, it's actually magic....or chemistry, or whatever ya want to call it.

Trap is the same 4-8 bar loop repeated w sumn counters
The music is really cool. But contrast? It’s like the contrast of finally biting into a piece of mint chocolate after the mint chocolate ice cream you’re eating has been screaming mint chocolate the entire meal. It’s different. It’s big. It’s even epic in how different it is texturally. But if you zoom out…..

Contrast comes in many forms as I mention. So if you are looking for verse I and verse ii to sound like totally different songs - I mean, okay but constrast doesn't need to be "whoaaaaa it's 10000% different" - again, soft vs loud is contrast. This isn't a case to just make non-cohesive music. It needs to make sense. But to say it isn't contrast is (I think) missing my point.
Nathan, 😇You should try a Challenge - 🤤Fl studio mobile producer VS 😈Pc Daw(logic, Ableton) producer
I prefer my music repetitive and played 100 times an hour on the radio. /s
You didn’t show any contrast, you have shown development through adding complexity and variety. A huge difference between this and contrast

First example was definitely contrast. Long vs short notes…

Skilled artists make it sound so simple. Guess i know this isnt my place to be making music 🤷♂️

Believe it or not - I spent probably 4 years making absolutely horrible music. My stuff was not goood and I would probably feel the same as you. Don't give up - if you love making music then don't stop. Keep going. Learning is hard but it's worth it!
