As someone who read the comic/graphic novel and saw the movie the Netflix show ended things in a satisfying way. Ramona learns not to run away from her problems, Scott learns to take accountability, Roxie gets closure , Matthew Patel gets to have a standing ovation , Lucas Lee and Ramona get closure and protected each other from the paparazzi which was an awesome fight montage imo, Knives jamming with Kim was sweet. I loved that the characters grew into better people.

Honestly, a different storyline is something I didn't know I wanted. It made Ramona and Scott less toxic characters, and fleshed out a lot of side characters. As a critique, I'd say there definitely should've been more Scott, maybe include some scenes vaguely showing where he is throughout the series or something like that.

We have the book, movie and game that are all pretty good telling's of the original story. Pushing the story into this new territory gave us something new. Why would anyone hate more from something the love.

The creator made the comic when he met his gf/wife. This series was made around the time of his divorce. I think the story pretty much reflects what is going on in his life. I think what we got is better as in it works with the other content and adds more instead of taking away. Bryan says it's a totally different universe, but c'mon, he's just saying that as damage control. Older Scott is pretty much the Scott from the movies. I started following Melonie many years ago and she was just a happy gamer. In recent years I see she's turned into such a hate monger literally having a stinkface every video. She was really misinformed about Scott Pilgrim...

  • @dartagnanjames8069

    @dartagnanjames8069

Honestly it has to be a different universe altogether. Stephen Stills was dating Julie until Volume 5 and then she moves to Montreal, for example. Most of the characters are completely different characters compared to the comics too. Gideon, Lucas Lee, Young Neil, Envy Adams, even Stephen and Kim are VERY different. They're basically different characters. Scott's pretty different, and Ramona's behavior for a good part of the series is almost out of character. Kim's entire story is lost in translation again. It wouldn't make sense for this to be anything other than it's own universe.

That sure looks like the Glow, which is a point in favor of this being the comics universe, but I think the weight of evidence is on the side of this being the movie universe. Ramona never glows at all, for example. There's other signs as well. Comics Lucas Lee, for example, is a relatively normal individual; he's met sitting down calmly reading a script, and is happy to share Gatorade and baby carrots with Scott and Co. while having a pretty normal conversation about Ramona. He isn't the crazed over-the-top Hollywood douchebro that Chris Evans taught us to love in the Movie... which is also who Lucas Lee is in the anime.

@@matthewgiglia643 we also see Scott fighting a robot created by the twins, but i don't think the anime Is in the same line as the cómics since as you said, Julie broker up with Stills earlier, the whole Scott saving Kim from Simon Lee was apparently real (which could also be canon in the movie), Matthew having never before seen abilities like summoning a trident and 4 extra arms. At first I am expecting more of Scott, I thought they won't just remove the character that has his name on the title of the show, then I fell in love with the colorful myriad of characters this whimsical world has to offer so I checked who voiced them and I am surprised of who are the casts, why are there so many big names on the cast? So I searched more about Scott Pilgrim and that's how I knew Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World exists, and then the comics. So yeah, I experienced Scott Pilgrim backwards and don't see why there are some who doesn't like it?

12:38 To add, I don’t think the series wanted to replace the comics to begin with, rather, it wanted to supplement it with something new to say. It asks you to not just be a fan of the original story, but to be a fan of the world, the characters beyond the inner circle, and, arguably most importantly, the themes that Scott Pilgrim as a whole stands for.

I only saw this as the altered timeline where Scott finally became one of the “evil exes”, of Ramona Flowers which I think is a really unique idea. I’m sure others may have theorized what it may be, but also pretty accurate towards the anime style and how Scott pilgrim is, which they can go hand in hand (only shooting my own opinion). Seeing it in real time, is nice. (Though the thing that irked me the most was Envy doing.. A WHOLE SCENE AT THE FUNERAL? THAT I WAS NOT OKAY WITH.

I remember after watching the movie and reading the comics how desperately I wanted more of this one-of-a-kind-magic-realism-indie-rock world and feeling certain there'd never really be more of it. I was excited by a new, expanded animation coming out, but what I got far exceeded what I expected. I'm so glad we got to see more of Ramona, and that so other many characters got to live and breathe. And I loved the theme of reconciling your own past that runs through it both with Ramona, and especially with Old Scott being the ultimate antagonist. I got very emotional at the end, I think from a mix of the storytelling and the nostalgia. It leaves me wanting to be better

My issue with Scott Pilgrim is that if you watched the movie, and wanted to know more you could read the comics. but since Takes Off was released Scott Pilgrim just has this awkward group of adaptations where if you watch Takes Off, then your required to watch the movie since it takes so much from it, and if you watch the movies you now have to read the comics to even understand the stuff that was only lightly touched on in the movie like "Subspace" and Scotts past relationships like with Kim. It feels like the real reason they took Scott out of Takes off is so that the Grade A voice-cast could have a reunion and more lines to say, which is nice and all but they really should've adapted the Original story first into an Anime before making Takes off, I Think Takes Off is great but they need to make the SP series more digestible to new people, no matter how outdated or cringey it was the Scott was dating a highschooler.

I think it's legitimate to regret we didn't get a full-up animated adaptation. This sequel series (and it IS a sequel; a sequel via time travel and AU and multiverse, but still a sequel) is incredible, and I wouldn't trade it away for anything. So much about it makes you fall in love with these people all over again, from Kim and Knives tender, intimate musical duet, to the rise and fall and rise again of Matthew Patel. It's really incredible. It shows that Scott Pilgrim was always meant to be animated. And that's a little bit of a problem. The 2010 movie has a ton of charm and fun; it oozes it out of every shot. But it was a live-action movie, which limited it in a lot of ways regarding what they could get away with on a low budget with a short runtime. They had 110 minutes to work with, which meant a LOT was getting chopped. If you were a fan of Kim's relentless attempts to maintain sanity and integrity in the face of a universe constantly kicking her in the teeth, if you liked the weird emotional metaphors surrounding Gideon and the Glow, if you wanted all of Envy's rich, complex backstory (not that Takes Off did better here) you were going to be out of luck, because the movie had to throw all that overboard in order to get the story it needed into the runtime it had. A proper, full-up animated adaptation could give us all that and more. (Lisa Miller is just always going to be shanked, isn't she?) We may get that one day, but that day isn't today, and I'm fine being a little sad and regretful over that. Still, it's 2023 and we got a fricking... unlooked for sequel to a movie that did very poorly a decade and a half ago. And it's charming and fun and makes you love it. That's a big win.

I smoked the anime in one night (while I should had been studying for finals). It is not a betrayal of the original series. It is a different flow of possibilities that shows way more maturity in the storytelling and way more character development. It does not replace the original series, but enhaces it beautifully.

Your video touched on something I was feeling going into the series. I was expecting the proper retelling of the original books going in, and I was worried about that because they were so much a product of their time, and for a personal note, they also really reflected with me because of the age I was when they all came out. So I wasn't sure if doing all of that over again would be able to resonate. Suffice to say, I was pleasantly intrigued when I saw what we actually got, and as it unfolded, it really answered both of my concerns. So I'm in the camp of folks who really like this adaptation and am glad we got it. It's a great compliment to the rest of the versions of this story.

because the show does a awful job doing it. The exes go from being plot devices for scott to getting some genral surface details, Ramona only apologies to roxie and glances over the rest of the exes in her won show of faceing her past. Worst part is the show tries to do to much in 8 epsiodes, with such limited time why show us kim, knives, etc show more ramona and exes interactions. We know the creator can do a good job, we are calling out the lazy/ bad writing, this is like walking into a gorden ramsey 5 star steak house, but they serve you burnt rubbery meat.

@@dmcoub78Ramona doesn't only apologize to Roxie. The writing wasn't lazy, you just didn't like what they chose to focus on. There's only so much time in the show to learn more about each of the evil exes, and the goal was to flesh them out past the surface details, which they did. There could've been more time, but there wasn't, and I liked the insights the show gave the audience regarding this cast's personalities and desires.

None of this helps build up Ramona, and the exes, it's just taking screen time from the characters that need more screen time. This is why Fiona and cake did a way better job, ten episodes but you only have two main characters to build so you can have a lot more depth, takes off also could have kept the Scotts friends story lines, but just built things up over several seasons, instead of craming it all into 8 episodes.

Also a young Neil kin 100% as a kid who wants to write but cant write for shit, have ideas but words don't like wording when i try to word the story into words.

Great video. Its hard to remember now, but I think the main reason that the movie failed when it was released was Michael Cera fatigue. After Arrested Development and Juno, there was a 3-6 year period where he was the lead in a lot of heavily promoted movies that no one remembers now. By the time trailers came out for Scott Pilgrim, I think general audiences were tired of seeing him, and they weren't willing to look at who else was involved in the movie that might convince them that this wasn't just another movie. Also, thanks for watching all of those bad takes of the show so we don't have to

Most people who watch Terminator 2, or play Metal Gear Solid 2 for the first time now probably have no idea that those were "bait and switch" products who's marketing played off of fan's expectations. In 10 years from now I wonder if this show will gain the same devoted love that the movie has.
