This Animal Rights Activist is Changing the Meat Industry | First Time Founders with Ed Elson

Ed speaks with Paul Shapiro, co-founder and CEO of The Better Meat Co., a food company that makes meat through fermentation. They discuss how Paul’s career in animal advocacy led him to start a company, his advice on fundraising, and why he believes saving animals can help save the planet.

Just saw your TED talk. 18 minutes of absolute, rivoting, cold-hearted truth. You've changed my perspective on the life of today, the future, and my child's future. Going to forward your TED talk to all my friends. Thanks again, I sincerely appreciate it.

I loved meat my whole life. But when I learned that Scientists have determined that animals are way more sentient than ever realized, I changed. When you eat a cow, you are eating a dog. Once I realized this, I went vegetarian. Not easy; but animals deserve better. 💯🤘💯

you love dogs? And what do dogs eat? Humans can (with out current advanced knowledge of diet) survive and even thrive on vegan diets. However, for the many thousands of years of our existence, we ate meat. I think: Just like the brain mechanism that tells us not to worry about dying, we also have a mechanism that tells us not to worry about killing an animal to eat. It's natural and ethical to eat animals. The key is to do it fairly. Humans eating meat 3 times a day was never supposed to happen and farming is hell on earth. Not that it matters but what I do: I eat meat but keep it to about once or twice per week. I make it an occasion and choose fairly raised and slaughtered animals (not "12 wings for £5" kinda shit).

There is no way to do it fairly or ethically to slaughter sentient animals. This is an ignorant take. Sorry.

There needs to be a rebalancing in prices. All of our subsidies to agriculture should be used to encourage people to buy locally-grown produce. Meat is naturally more expensive because of its resource-intensity. It isn’t priced right because the meat industry receives subsidies, abuses its workforce, and finds ways to cut corners.

I have just remembered that we japanese have 1200 years of history of considering eating meat aversion. Not that we didn't completely eat, but they were strongly averted.

I hear him about the appalling conditions animals are put through in industrialised farming - but life in the wild is brutal and not some Disney movie. Every animal in the wild generally dies a horrific death by being either through being hunted down for food or just dying in a painful traumatising way. The lives our pets live are not representative of the real world for animals in general.

i consider 24:20 an very unethical answer from Paul Shapiro: "is your product ultra-processed food?" and the correct answer is "YES", not to start a long monolog about how bad ultra-processed food is. The follow up question could be: "is your product unhealthy?" and the answer should be "we don´t know yet, but most properly ..." - it is ultra processes, take a guess how healthy this is. A lot of the "vegan alternatives" products should not be considered for consumption, as the list of ultra-processed ingredients is long. Do you own research. The "meat alternative" industry seems to repeat the same tactics big tobacco used, trying very hard to spin the narrative. The solution is not to produce a meat-like product, but to switch consumers to actually prefer vegetarian options. I can buy 1kg of pork for 2.50 Euro, but 1kg of tomatoes costs about 5-12 Euros (!). You will NOT find many vegetables in a typical supermarket that sell for 2.50 or less - even potatoes or onions are more expensive. This is what needs fixing. You find many, many ready-to-eat meat options and almost no vegetarian alternatives - or at a 3x price point.

Animals raised for meat consumption are raised according to strict guidelines. Deforestation, pesticides used in food production for plant production is actually the single biggest contributor to environmental and humane health catastrophes. I don’t hate lions because they are obligate carnivores. Our health as a nation has declined because of high grain and plant consumption. We can humanely raise and process meat. It is the cleanest food for humans Grains have been historically used to prevent starvation. That’s actually killing us in long term use. Look at national health statistics. Our nation has been shifting to a plant based diet and we’re now diying at an earlier age than our parents.

Good episode and I like that we get to choose with our wallets what we want to eat. While I still eat meat it’s once a week vs multiple times daily, I’ve found so many good substitutes that I don’t even think about it. Oh and if this Prof G podcast ever ends I swear Ed would be the best narrator, could you imagine his voice to the lead in of lord of the rings, or house of the dragon. It’s so unique and distinct, that’s your bread and butter Ed, get a contract with Audible!

Meat (real) should be a luxury: eating quality and sustainable meat, poultry, and seafood should be the default. Everyday, plant and fungi based protein can be a healthier, cheaper, and more sustainable alternative for sustenance. This is especially true for nations and states that lack land for traditional agriculture. Think of all the farmland and pastures that can be redeveloped for housing and high-productivity. That all being said, this is a major change for Anglo and Latin Americans who have become accustomed to industrialized agriculture. In US, agribusiness lobbyists will fight this tooth-and-nail.
