This and That: 2019 Russian Nationals (евгения медведева, алина загитова フィギュアスケート фигурное катание)

Спорт

This week on 'This and That,", Evgenia Medvedeva and Alina Zagitova headlined the field at the 2019 Russian Nationals, yet Eteri Tutberidze's talented junior trio of Anna Shcherbakova, Alena Kostornaia and Alexandra Trusova dominated the ice in Saransk and took home medals.
Stanislava Konstantinova and Sofia Samodurova also earned berths to the upcoming 2019 European Championships with their performances. And Brian Orser earned twitter fame by forgetting the Kiss and Cry had microphones.
Maxim Kovton, Mikhail Kolyada, Alexander Samarin, Andrei Lazukin and Dmitri Aliev topped the men's field. Tatiana Tarasova could barely contain her emotion.
The pair event featured stunning performances by Evgenia Tarasova and Vladimir Morozov and Natalia Zabiiako and Alexander Enbert. Aleksandra Boikova and Dmitrii Kozlovskii earned bronze under the tutelage of Tamara Moskvina.
In the dancing pairs, Viktoria Sinitsina and Nikita Katsalapov earned gold over rivals Alexandra Stepanova and Ivan Bukin. Tiffany Zahorski and Jonathan Guerreiro made uncharacteristic errors in the free dance and wound up in 7th place in the ice dance field.

All I’m going to say is I am glad the Russian crowd was so supportive, not just of Zhenya, but they cheered loud for many of our girls. It rained hearts for Zagitova and roses for Medvedeva. The silly media and bloggers on sports.ru have been spewing the most insulting articles against these girls. I’m glad Zhenya was talking and laughing with her former teammates. Her and Alina went to an orphanage together and they were laughing and talking. All this fabricated drama… Also, there’s a video of Zhenya telling Brian “my back hurts”. I’ve read on rus forums she has a spine injury…

say what you will about zhenya’s performances this weekend, but i thought that by the end of the free program and at her gala today she looked happier and more confident than i’ve seen her all season long. i think regardless of placement seeing all the love she still has in russia really meant a lot to her. a year ago if she’d had this kind of placement she would be devastated, and while i do think it’s important to care how you do in competition (and she clearly still does) i think being able to turn the losses into something great is important as well. a year ago i never would’ve believed she would’ve sat in the kiss and cry laughing and smiling after falling at nationals, but there she was!!! i was so thrilled to see such a big smile on her face. i’m happy she went to nationals and i’m happy brian went with her, because it seemed like they have a much better understanding and connection now than they did even just a month ago. she also said she would be grateful to go to euros/worlds (prior to the competition) but if she didn’t then it just meant she’d have more time to work on herself. i’m happy for her progress mentally.

She is really coming along and developing. That is why I think she is improving. It looks like she has gotten through the worst part of her period of adjustment. Zagitova will also have to adjust. There is an expression I like, "when you're going through hell, keep going!" It does look like Medvedeva has fire and passion left inside of her.

TheSkatingLesson it warmed my heart to see her and alina goofing off together after the gala. in a way, alina’s experience this weekend resembles the same thing zhenya went through at the beginning of the year - seeing yourself being overtaken by a younger, healthier, stronger teammate (or in alina’s case, 3 of them at once.) evgenia watched alina’s skate and i think she recognizes this as well. both of them are incredible and i really hope they are able to continue powering through these difficult times.

I think Evgenia knows that she has a lot of work to do on the spins - she said in a recent interview that the spins are her weak point right now. She's said in interviews in the past (as far back as 2016, I think) that she wants to spin faster, and even though the positions were a little better back then the spins weren't as fast as she's capable of (except for the layback, which had excellent speed, but she's unfortunately avoiding it because of the back injury). She also had to change some of the positions since she couldn't do a layback this season, and it takes time to figure out which positions will work best and then more time to perfect them. The new training style, new choreography, and necessary changes to the jump technique obviously took a lot of training time as well. I think they should have given her programs that were are easy/comfortable as possible for this season and just worked on the basic skating skills and jump and spin technique for this season. They tried to do too much at once, and I think Evgenia was very smart to go with a new, more comfortable short program for nationals and I'm so glad that she skated a decent long. She definitely felt the pressure, especially after a tough grand prix season and I think she responded well! I can't wait to see what she does next - she and Kostornaia are always my favorite to watch. Alina is also amazing and I so hope that she is given better programs next season!

It has become very clear that Zagitova has injuries, but her team won't give it away (she had her knee and her ankle taped up at the GPF, and at the RusNats BOTH of her knees were taped up). I would really want to see her at the 2019 European Championships, but at the same time, the girl needs some rest and a good time to recover, so I'd rather have her skip the Euros. He mentioned that when Evgenia first got to TCC, she "did not know how to train on her own" since she was so used to being told how to do everything in the past, so it makes sense that she would ask for more direction from him or for him to be more critical.

The axel seems to be a great jump for her lately, so much so that she chooses to use it in combos. I was so surprised when she faltered on it the first time & then for her to have the exact same error on it at Russian Nationals really surprised me.

Dave I agree with you that Brian was overly optimistic about what could be accomplished in one year, and that accounts for some not awesome decisions (and unnecessarily thwarted expectations). But I also agree with Jonathan (and Brian's current party line) which is that such a massive reworking of a technique that was designed for disposable (to Eteri) pre-pubescent bodies is simply going to take time. And I think Russians nats was, at the end of the day, a big step forward for Zhenya. I am not in any way happy that Zagitova imploded so badly, but I think it gave Zhenya a real look at what the counterfactual would have been and I suspect that will keep her going. She's at least in a place that might provide her the tools necessary for longevity, which Zagitova clearly isn't. If she has the will I think both she and Team Orser have the talent necessary to build on this year and I would bet money that she will stay in the mix and come back roaring next year. She certainly seems to have had her spirits raised at the end of the day. And that sal/ loop was really cool.

Actually I also agree with Dave that they need to be structuring a program (with Rach etc.) that is designed to get her out of Russia. Unlike Zagitova I think Zhenya has the potential to get huge scores on components if they spend more time on them. I wonder if skating with Jason will help along those lines, especially with the new judging criteria. I really, really hope the mother doesn't pull her back. I think that would be a disaster at this point; the die has been cast and she needs to finish the course of antibiotics at this point!

@@evanperilstein5308 but who would spend more time with Zag? Eteri looks to be done with Zag and is more interested in her up and coming batch of girls for the next season. Unless Zag leaves Eteri for a better coach, she doesn't seem to have the potential Evgenia has at this point. Also, Zag's posture is becoming increasingly 'hunchy' and she skates a lot slower than she used to with poorer ice coverage than many of the other girls in the competition. Evgenia on the other hand looks to be improving in terms of skating skills. While the improvement is minute, you can see that she's skating faster with better ice coverage than she used to. So all in all, at this point, Evgenia looks to have more potential in the future while Zag's future in skating looks painfully short. I really do hope Zag finda a better coach for herself. She needs it.

@@evanperilstein5308 of course i've heard already this idiotic theory pushed by TSL that there is two types of jumps, those that "related on rotation" (bad technique, dissappering after the puberty) and those that related on strength and height (good technique, sustainable, lasting forever). it's beyong laughable. first of all, you can't just teach the height or rotation speed. it mostly depends on athlete natural physical abilities (so it's hardly a coach responsibility either the technique "good" or "bad") . the second of all tyktameshvea on her 3A has the same rotation speed that trusova has on her quads. many of senior men are rotating faster than trusova, and the skater with the fastest rotation speed in the world is actually coached by brian orser. his name is stephen gogolev and he has 6.5 rps on his quads (in comparison to trusova 5.5.-5.6 rps). third. trusova jumps higher than many of the senior men. here's a 63 cm high 4T for example kzread.info/dash/bejne/l35nqdipfcvFk6g.html it's bigger than the average height of chen (60cm), hanyu (61 cm), or fernandez (58 cm) 4T. although it doesn't mean that it's the best technique in the world that will last forever. we have plenty of examples how the ladies with enormously big jumps (vivian le, karen chen, polina tsurskaya) are struggling. and we have a plenty of examples of skaters who had a long and succesuful career with tiny jumps that relying on rotation speed (most of american skaters actually, including michelle kwan) in the russian skating community we have a term "puberty witnesses". it describes people who are making such idiotic statements about "rotation speed" etc. they are considered crazy and religious fanatics, who never bothered to study any actual data or numbers about the jumps. but i guess in american community it's ok to be ignorant. you call yourself a "competitive skater" after all, and still saying such a crazy nonsense about some special technique that eteri is teaching. while there is videos on youtube with dudakov master classes (he's a main jumping coach in eteri team). and any person who is interested and knows something about skating can watch it and see for yourself that the things that dudakov is teaching is no different from any other good coach in the world. but it's too much to expect from the people like TSL that they are actually interested not in gossips, but in learning something about the jumps

Because I think it'll help her grow artistically, like, it's new, smth new, not some piano-sad-instrumentals, where you can be "so light and beautiful" with your skating, but it's a little step forward. On her skating skills, well imo you went too hard on her xD I mean, she's improved, and it's obvious. She's getting there, it might take time. But she needs to work on it. I mean, what you said was true, but if only you added that it's better than before, that would be more fair. As for Alina, with that technique she's not gonna last. Un-effing-fortunately. Her spins are beautiful, possibly the best ones among russian ladies. I cn't talk much about her, everything else you said here or in your previous talks - I simply agree on. I'm super upset about her knee situation, and Daniil said something about trying quds? wtf??? In that state of health. And it seems to me, that spins are easier for her (and for other girls) because she is a natural skater, unlike evgenia. Like, her body type is more prone to it. Loved Misha's comeback (sort of). He was there, yes, but couldn't pit his programs together. I HOPE he'll be able to skate like that (at least) or even better for the rest of the season. he's got talent for sure. In light of all this, I don't understand even more how Medvedeva won every single competition for 2 years and even broke records at most. Was her technique really THAT much better? It is all so confusing. Especially because i almost always preferred Kostner's skating, and could never really get that much out of Medvedeva's skates, inspite of all the mimicry, body twisting, arm waving and all that. Kostner's oneness with the music just was so superior to me. Even her jumps seemed technically more solid somehow and Medvedeva's more rickety and heavy, even though she consistently landed them. But part of me thought there must be something i'm not getting. Now i'm getting the creepy sensation that i was right all along, but i'm still bewildered how she could gotten all those record breaking scores. Was it all fake in a way??

@@user-yj6wo8bf9m I thought about it and i think i might know the answer - it was never any secret that she was gaining points by backloading her programs - i think all jumps except one were always in the second half of the program, just like what Zagitova was doing. I believe ISU recently changed this, but at the time it was making these skaters unbeatable. Secondly - the arm over the head on almost all jumps. This was racking up the points as well. Nobody else in the world at this point was doing that. I think now younger skaters everywhere have picked up on the arm thing. Interestingly I think Medvedeva has said that that way of jumping is actually very comfortable for her, so i'm not sure i fully understand what those extra points are all about. One thing that bothered me about her jumps is that they never looked very high, which kind of left a blah impression, as compared to Osmond's jumps, or even Kostner's somehow looked more impressive. But i guess height does not affect GOE all that much. The other way she gained is I think what everyone calls transitions. I still don't quite understand what that is, but i think it is all that body twisting and arm flailing that you see in between the jumps and other more obvious elements. The Russian skaters all do more one-footed skating than anyone else, whereas their two-footed looks a little bit labored. But this apparently gets points too, not sure in what category. North American skaters were at the time all quite two-footed, though their skating looks to me more fluid and fast, more organic and natural. From what i can tell from the new and upcoming juveniles and juniors all of these things they are starting to catch up with, but it may take some time for that big once in a lifetime star to appear. But where are the Brittish, French, Germans.. I have no idea. Russia and Japan is it, but Europe seems to have completely lost interest in the sport and is not even trying to compete. or maybe have much say in the scoring. One interesting thing i've heard is that the scoring system is the way it is largely not due to the Russians, but to n. Americans! Way back when the Russians were not considered all that technical but more artistic and making the scoring more technically oriented was maybe thought to return the emphasis to the other style more and remove the pressure of the Russian skating quality that was impressing audiences and judges. But this has come back to bite everyone in ways they never thought possible!! :)). Not sure how accurate this is or where i heard/read it, but does sound plausible. What next? Who knows. But one thing's for sure, this sport is always changing like crazy.

I like when Tat is so in to skaters and she’s with S/B and she was so dead inside during the GPF after their skate. She said sth like that - what were the levels? Oh I knew it. Ilia Averbukh opinion about P/C was interesting too. Also Bobrova and her friend were hilarious too - he was like oh don’t even get me started about them, don’t provoke me. And Bobrova said that - I don’t think Guilliame’s steps there were clean and I could see it with the naked eye. Yet they got lvl4. But it’s irritating the same time because some people consider her this crazy ass grandma who loves skating. And they totally skip the part when she also bodyshames the skaters.

I would also think that, although I think only Kostornaia can become senior next year, the other two are currently 14, so they become seniors in 2 years. But, next year, there will be Anna Tarusina in seniors, who already skated better than Medvedeva at this nationals, but wasn't so graciously scored. There are also few junior girls who are prospective, Gubanova, Vasileva, Gulyakova. So, next year we need to see what happens to Konstantinova, Samodurova, Zagitova, Tuktamisheva, maybe they can continue for another season. If Zagitova somehow stabilizes her growth, maybe she can be competitive next year, but if she isn't., then she lasted less than Med. But, I definitely see Kostornaia and Tarusina next year top in Russia. And, I also see the next two seasons in Russia being cemented by these 16 yr olds in the senior group.
