Cleft palate makes it harder to nurse. The milk can end up more easily aspirated, killing the puppy. Takes a special hand nursing technique, most don't know, and you are bottle, or syringe, feeding every few hours, to ensure the dog's survival. Most people, breeders, the puppies are not their primary, much less sole, income. So they can't ne rhere, full time to care for him. But a shelter with trained volunteers, each can do so on their off days. Chances are he was surrendered to better ensure his survival. My wife and I, mainly me, as I'm a medically retired double amputee, volunteer as fosters, at my ex girlfriend's clinic and shelter. We have cared for 5 cleft palate dogs and cats, over the last 18 years. One of which is Bravo, her Boston Terrier, who did get the corrective surgery. Another is Diesel, my 9 year old Chocolate Lab, also surgically corrected, who has been my service dog, for the last 8 years. Given that 40 years ago, both woukd have been "bucket dogs ", I'd aat he waa surrendered out of love, and wanting to gove him the best chance, at a good long life, with a loving family. What Bravo and Diesel have with us. And they have a new sibling, a 5 month old yellow lab famale, we named Mahle, (Molly for non gearheads) who I'm training, with Diesel, to take over service duties sometime next year. I will retire him from service, but we also trained our boys as therapy dogs, so he will still ne going to hospice, nursing homes, and hospitals with us, and have purpose, while doing what he loves. So not everyone surrenders their dog, because of a lack of love for them. The few we had to surrender of find new homes for, our first choice, were because we knew we couldn't gove them a life they deserve, but someone we know and trust can. And if we had room, we would certainly take that little Frenchie in. And if he was a surrender, that we couldn't keep, we'd take on the pain we know we'd feel, when he got a permanent home, happily. As we have with every foster we raised.

@@sbg1911 I invite you to take that kob on, for the first 6 to 7 weeks. Then you can speak with knowlesge, rather than hate. Read my prior reply, and ask yourself if you could do that, and hold down a full time job. Because most breeders, it's a sideline, not their primary income. Puppy mills, you'd be correct, but most would euthanize, rather than sureender. At least the breeder in this case did the right thing, and gave that puppy a chance. As did the breeders who surrendered our 2.

I hate to be that person, but in all reality it was probably someone breeding dogs to sell who didn't want to lose money on getting him the surgery. Unethical dog breeding is a huge problem.

​@@Jynxxy13ravedollor it wasn't anoit the money, but the time involved in the special care he would need. My wife and I have fostered 5 cleft palate dogs and cats, and adopted 2. One of which jas has been my service dog for 8 years. Most require hand nursing, as the cledt causes suction issues, and can more easily cause the milk to be aspirated, killing the puppy. A responsible breeder is more likely to take a loss, and surrender the puppy, to ensure it gets the best care possible, so it can live a good, long life. My lab, Diesel, and our Boston both had the surgery, and both are therapy dogs, az well as the lab being my service dog. I'm a double amputee. He is my legs when the going is rough with my wheelchair. The extra pull to get me out, and a hand up, when I fall, and more then a pet to us. And words can't say what they mean to the people we visit in care facilities. He is also training Mahle, a 5 month old surrendered yellow lab female, for when we retire him from service next year, making him a support animal, full time. Both our boys were breeder surrenders, for the reasons I mentioned earlier. To give them a full, good life.

the owners did this because they would have to tube feed the pup every hour day and night and there would be a possible chance of the pup not living so you surrender it to a rescue to help it and find a home with a 99.9 whence of living bc they have the right tools etc hope this helped
