This 90-Year-Old Woman Did Not Know Foreigners Existed

Let me take you inside the traditional Akha community of Baan Pa Kia in the mountains of Chiang Rai, where we hunt for our own lunch, cook traditional Akha food and talk to a village elder.

This was a great video about the Akha people. Thanks for putting this up. The Thai historical society should document the language and culture before it is lost. I will definitely look at adding this to my next Thailand trip

You make amazing videos Paddy. I love how respectful you are to everyone and bring attention to such interesting topics throughout your channel. Keep up the great work. Your videos always remind me of the never ending diversity and beauty of Thai culture. I'm inspired to learn Thai but we'll see how far I get. It would be a dream to get to your level someday.

Paddy, you dont know how lucky you are! But more importantly, Im guessing the memories of that one lady would make an interesting read - we have no idea about indiginous cultures and living away from other societies in small settlements...a tough life for sure! Maybe it would be a good venture to keep in touch with locals and help document or prompt questions to help preserve part of the culture? I am sure the tourism efforts help, but elders will have answers to questions probably not asked by locals... Simple questions like what would your day have been like when x age.. I envy the language skills - it brought some obvious love of so many things..a far cry from the haymarket street interviews... Best of luck and thanks for sharing..

My love for awhile now is Thailand. A very close person I know grew up in the valley of chai prakan below the mountains. When she was a kid in the mid 70’s getting up early bringing the hot oil to the morning market before school. She never saw the mountain tribes people ( as she called them ). In reference to what grandma was saying about living deep in the forest. The endless fascination with another place and time and world. Anyway paddy This was sweet!! Sawadeekap Khob khun kap chok dee kap

So I was curious about your friend Praew’s backstory or how you connected with her for your introduction into Akha culture. It was good to hear her be your interlocutor and translator so the Akha language was also exposed to your channel audience. Interesting video. We live only one province away from Chiang Rai, but have avoided the indigenous villages after doing one of those very exploitative tours where local people seem to be displayed, as it were, like curiosities. What you have done seems a much more natural and immersive experience that respects the people and their culture more than the more commercial tourist approach you see too often (bad example: the “Long Neck Village” of the Karen people near Chiang Mai).

More introductions to minority peoples of the area please Paddy! I've always been interested in the Tai Lü and Khün cultures who I have not visited. I'm also interested in refugees from Myanmar. I have met Hmong people in Laos but I'd still like to know more about them too. And thanks for including the Akha language intact up without editing it out or dubbing over it like so many would do!! Here's a suggestion. I'd love you to find some kind of school or teacher of Northern Thai / Lanna one time when you're in the Chiang Mai / Chiang Rai area. Would love to see you learn to read ᨣᩴᩤᨾᩮᩬᩥᨦ!
