It's hard to imagine your elderly parents or grandparents up and about, let alone living an active life. But for Dolly, who's 67, rock climbing helps her turn back the clock and bond with her daughter.

Theres a guy in my gym who just turned 70. Still lead climbs 5.12 on overhanging roofs. He's in better shape than most of the 20 year olds.

I'm a 67-year-old woman. I started climbing at 64. I top-rope and lead climb three days a week. I regularly climb 5.10a routes and have climbed a few 5.10b and 5.10c routes. I also walk on a treadmill at home daily--6 miles on days I go to the gym and 8 or more miles on days that I don't climb. I have walked for years, but I was never an athlete until I hit 64. I love the challenge and the fun of indoor rock climbing.

I started 2 mos before turning 64...at JOSHUA TREE, of all places, so no joke. I'm in the gym most weeks, yet OUTSIDE is actually less intimidating. It's all the beady eyes & plastic 👀👀. I'm 65 now & just now delving into select 10As in the gym bcs our meetup is only 1x/wk, but we absolutely aren't organized for female climbers here (and bravo to Arizona & Texas for being so female-climb group friendly). I'm working fervently to establish a cadre of good partners (how they belay is SO important-- read that as LISTENS). I climbed multiple routes at Stryker in Montana & just booked a full day each- locally at Mission Gorge, San Diego, & another at Red River Gorge in Kentucky. I'm excited to get OUTSIDE again. I love the challenge & confidence building climbing has brought me, and don't care if I'm ever the snappiest climber at the gym. I know I'm HAVING fun & BRING the fun 🤙🤙🧗♀️
It’s so wonderful that she can feel young again through climbing. Not only is she inspiring, but so is the community around her. Sometimes it is difficult to break down barriers and just be a friend to someone, regardless of age or ability. Here’s to many more years of climbing, Auntie!!
This is great. One of my climbing buddies just turned 79 and my dad just started climbing this year the age of 72. He comes with me and my boys and all 3 generations of us just go and enjoy and make some memories. Good times.
my 72 year old grandpa still goes climbing with us. he even leads. it’s quite impressive!
I was 39 when I went on a hiking tour in New Zealand. There I met a man from Israel who was in his sixties, who simply told me that he was in good shape due to doing a lot of hiking and cycling around the year when the weather permits and going indoor climbing at other times. It was after this talk that I returned home and tried indoor climbing for the first time. Before that I thought I am too old to start this kind of activity. I'm 45 now, and I've been doing climbing since then regularly. All these restrictions are really in our head first, now I know that)

that one lady in her senior climbing group being 80 really suprised me, amazing
I'm nowhere close to her age just yet, but her mentioning that climbing helped her back pain reminded me.. I have fibromyalgia and the frequency of my flares has SIGNIFICANTLY decreased and my overall daily pain has decreased as well since I started climbing about a year ago. Me and my boyfriend host "top-rope tuesday's" at our local gym and we get a fair amount of people around or past their 40's/50's. After just a few sessions they often report decreased pain from older injuries or even arthritis (obviously, do take care if you are to climb with an injury). Climbing has been known to help with mental pain as well, we hear this most often. I just love it so much and I love hearing stories like our Aunty Dolly here
Ahh so this must be my encik's grandmother that he keeps talking about everyday during training

Im only in my mid 20s but climbing also solved my back pain! Years and years of chronic back pain from working out is gone. I’ve been climbing for about 9 months and it’s crazy how much better it is
She is so awesome! My grandfather climbed up until he he fell sick with Alzheimer's, but he enjoyed ice and rock climbing well into his 60's. I started climbing about 6 months ago, and it's been amazing to continue his legacy. Love the older generation of climbers so much.
My goodness. What an inspiring lady!! 👏❤
This lady is THE GOAT. Hats off to her. She brings good to the title of "aunty"
This is so beautiful!!! Thank you so much for sharing💗💗💗
When I was in my early 20's, I lived in South Korea. There's a lot of good outdoor climbing there, and a lot of retired older Koreans who crush. One weekend I was climbing with some friends at a crag outside of Ulsan, and we hopped on a 12b with fixed draws that was pretty tough - I only got a few draws up. This old Korean lady, who must've been in her mid to late 50's, was telling me how to climb it, and I ignored her. After we got off, she got on the route and proceeded to turn to us and tell us all the beta AS SHE WAS CLIMBING IT. Humbling.
This was so beautiful to watch, big smile on my face the whole way through!
So good seeing I'm in company (I'm not much younger than you). My daughter got me into climbing a little over a year ago, and now she has me leading!! What we mom's will do for our kids, while loving every minute of it 😍

So inspiring! Started rock wall climbing last week at age 69...Wadda blast!
Inspiring!
Started climbing in 1973, I'm 68 now. I routinely lead 11+ outdoors (I suck in the gym), and occasionally get up the odd 12. The last 15 years has not been the greatest healthwise - lumbar spine issues mean no more real bouldering. Three level cervical fusion (you don't want to know), and now in cancer remission. The only good thing is losing weight during cancer treatment I'm finally down that 15 pounds I always wanted off in middle age! Power wise I'm weak as a kitten compared to my prime, but my mental game has mostly made up for it. Wished I knew then, when I could easily do one arm pullups, what I know now.

I was dumped by a climber because I was a hiker. I said “teach me” but he said our level would be too different. What he didn’t know was that I was willing to try for me, not for him, to face my fear of height. I conquered my decades long fear of water by self learning how to swim since 2021. I can swim free style and breaststroke comfortably today. I am sure I can join a climbing gym to give rock climbing a go (I have harness and all sorts of biners from mountaineering days). I am retired. I set goals to look forward to until my eyes can’t see, fingers frozen, mind goes, or heart gives up.

It's importnat to know that not all 67-years old can achieve this because of sedentarity during younger age. BUT! This is a lot of inspiration for the mindset! It's not about "everyone can do what she can", because it's not true, but everyone can try getting out of their comfort zone and be healthier and more connected 🥰 You might even surprise yourself!

This is a nice video 👍. Climbing is one of the physical sports, where age doesn't matter as much as in many other sports. Of course it matters but you can balance out the explosive power loss with other attributes. I started climbing at 35 years and my personal best has been 7c since 1999. I was still able to climb a 7c in 2020 at 61y and hopefully this year again after overcoming some health problems now. And even if not, climbing beautiful outdoor routes is so much fun in good company.
