This $2700 Ebike Is Genius - Ride1Up Prodigy V2 Review

go.ride1up.com/SH3F - Click here to see current price and availability
Ride1Up Prodigy V2 sports a continuous variable transmission gearbox built into the rear rub which receives it's power from a German engineered Brose Sprinter TF mid-drive motor, delivered courtesy of a smooth, silent, and low maintenance Gates Belt. The ride is buttery smooth, as it should be considering it's $2700 price tag - but are the benefits of the CVT worth the trade off of a lower power transfer efficiency?
Post review note: This Enviolo CVT gets about 85% power transfer efficiency, which will contribute to a slight range reduction compared to a traditional chain/cassette which achieves about 95%+ power transfer efficiency... Trade offs 😜🤙⚡️

Interesting. I always see just numbers for motor watts and torque. How is power transfer efficiency calculated and how could.that relate to determining an bike's ability to climb a steep hill better or worse than another. J am looking at 2 pretty different ebikes. One has a 500W hub motor,(and 8 gears), and spec's say 60nm torque. The other is this bike w the Brose mod moter and CVT at 250 Watts, a much smaller watt motor, but spec's at a much higher 90 NM torque. So that confuses me enough right there. But how does that translate into which one gets up a hill easier and faster assuming all else is the same,(weight, cadence)?

Nicely-equipped bike, especially for its price compared to similar e-bikes, and I’m glad to see Ride1Up now ships it with the fork installed, which was the most difficult step when I assembled the LMT’d I bought from them in late 2020. At the time, their assembly instructions didn’t show this step in detail, which would have been handy as the components were slipped on the fork in the wrong order and orientation on mine. I am torn between this model (which would likely replace my LMT’d) and the Wired Freedom. Quite different bikes with different missions. I enjoy the control a torque sensor provides, but the higher unrestricted top speed of the Wired bikes is useful for keeping pace with motorized traffic when I have to ride in it to get between sections of protected paths.

It's a good looking bike, has a lot of tech, looks well built. If I was a younger man I would like to have one in my arsenal. I unfortunately came in to this game to late, I would need a throttle to help me out. I've looked at a lot of e-bikes now and thanks to your channel I've been able to see them in action. The mid hub motor with belt drive bikes are the ones that interest me the most, but I haven't seen one with a throttle. Perhaps there is one, I just haven't seen one yet. I know you said the shifter seemed cheaply made but Enviolo products are very well made. The quality parts on this bike make the bike actually very low priced because the same specs this bike has are also found on trek, specialized, scott, Riese and Muller who all price their bikes at 3000 to 7000. So actually this bike is a steal. The Brose mid drive is a very well made German product and pairs perfectly with the Enviolo internal gearing. Also this motor relies purely on pedal pressure so there is no run off which means there is no need for the brake motor cut off. This bike is perfect for people who want to ride a bike and have that traditional pedaling feel.

Namaste bro, your moving up the value stack! Been a pleasure to track your growth. :) It would be great to see you testing the more expensive & specified ebikes. They matter (perhaps more?) as much as cheap 'entry' mods. The mid-drive setup is popular in european ebike scene, and has been out in higher spec bikes for awhile. The enviolo hub with a Bosch motor for example, is popular by Riese & Muller. They start at $4k USD & up. At the higher speeds 'phantom peddling' can be a problem. Glad you didnt see that.

Ride1up made people who bought their 700 series bikes have to assemble the front fork and headstock when they received their shipment. It was the most major PIA in the world, because they would never even ship the right parts for the fork and included absolutely ZERO instructions for how to do it. Glad to see they came to their senses and at least are doing that part properly. The 700 series also came with weak-torque motor and it looks like the Brose motor is still struggling a bit here on hills. The packaging material on their 700 series was hot garbage and sadly, it looks like they haven't taken any extra steps to solve that problem (more cardboard is NOT the answer - foam is). The biggest problem with Ride1up bikes is that it appears absolutely NO ONE in China can properly tension their spokes, so you get wheels that make popping sounds from the minute you get on one. I HOPE they have fixed that problem on this newer bike.

  • @trainluvr

I had to tighten many spokes, but still get the popping sound when taking off about 15% of the time. Range is still good after 3+years of light to moderate use and looking to upgrade now that the cadence sensor on my 700 is cutting in and out.

It uses a Gates carbon belt, which can handle the 90Nm this motor puts out. Other review channels have proven this setup can yield 90mi of range on a single charge when ridden at around 14-16mph on mostly flat terrain, well beyond what most people will do and well beyond the 30-50mi that Ride1Up claims. Ridden hard over the same path was still over the 30mi estimate.

You always say the motor is giving you 120W etc. But no, thats what you give into the system. You have to switch into the advanced mode, where the bike shows you our amount of power and the power output of the motor. The max of the motor is 520W. The range of the Enviolo is a bit limited. This motor combined with a 12 speed 10-52 cassette and this thing climbs the steepest mountains. I have this motor on an MTB and it is nuts how good this thing climbs. The only thing that isn't that great is the power consumption. Compared to Bosch, you feel that it is more thirsty. For what it is and all the nice components, the Prodigy is really cheap. I think that a lot people in the US will not understand the pricing. You can see it on your channel. Most of the bikes have big batteries and at least 750W or higher motor with up to 50mph, but all the components are from super low quality. And there is another point, the brakes. All these fatbikes come with 2 piston brakes, what is way underpowered for such a heavy weight. These 4 piston brakes should be standard on heavy bikes. You really feel the difference and they don't head up that fast, as normal 2 piston brakes. I think that most US costumers would prefer something a bit more powerful, as this motor is made for 18mph regulations and I think that Ride1Up would have gone with something like the 120 or 160Nm Bafang mortors, but the Enviolo can't handle more than 90Nm.

The Eviolo goes 25mph and the Prodigy 1up goes 28mph. Extremely uncommon to see a 50mph ebike, 1 maybe 2 brands and I feel like they should be illegal on streets to drive that fast on an ebilke. So that's a total non-sense hot take.

Whats this odd conspiracy you came up with? Plenty of youtube reviews out there and also those are well established brands of components. Really the only thing ebikes come up with themselves is the frame design.

How disappointing. Finally, they make an efficient bike that can give 150 miles range with a normal size e-bike battery, but instead puts in a dinky little capacity battery and turned this potentially awesome e-bike into another lame e-bike without the range. Unbelievable. BTW, is the rear rack strong because it seems to be missing the upper pieces connecting the rack to the seat stays or seat tube?
