I’ve only been able to turn it but a handful of times but it’s quickly became one of my favorites as well! Especially how quick it dries

I think of box-elder as a smallish early succession tree, never one to grow as big as that chunk. That's a real beauty.

Flaming box elder is so interesting. Makes for a beautiful bowl. Wish we had it where I live. Nice work.

I appreciate the kind words Anthony! I am finally getting the hang of the extension and seeing what it is capable of. Got a few little tweaks I would like to do but overall it was a fantastic addition.

I just found your channel. Outstanding wood turning! I bought a Laguna 18|36 several months ago, but have not been able to use it yet since standing is very painful due to back,hip and knee issues. Then I see you turning a 22” bowl with the same lathe and it really excites me about the time I can stand at the lathe once again and use that feature of the lathe. I have so many ideas I want to try, but being on my feet for 5-10 minutes is all I can take and I am toast for the rest of the day. Knee and hip replacements planned in the future.

This lathe is capable of a lot & this is only the 110v version too. But Im sorry to hear that; Would it be possible to rig up some sort of stool or chair to the height that would be needed in the meantime? I appreciate the kind words & glad you found my channel!

@@andrewmccarn A stool would not adequately work. As you know, the body controls the turning tools by doing the wood turners dance. To achieve good turnings, the hands and arms should just hold the tool while the body does the work. This is particularly true for turnings the size you do. Consequently, the shifting and twisting one must do becomes very painful for me while standing. My issues stem from a serious accident I had in 2016 in addition to others sustained while in the USMC during the Vietnam War in 1968. Now the chickens have come home to roost since arthritis from those injuries is compounding the problems.

You're doing a great job with these large pieces. One suggestion you might want to try - when you are shaping the outside of the bottom if you switch to a push cut instead of a pull cut (same effective presentation of the bevel) you will get good clean cuts while still standing on the bottom end of the bowl instead of on the side. This helps to prevent possible injury should anything let loose. With these big pieces, there's a lot of energy there, even at low revs.

Thank you! Yeah bottoms are something that I have struggled to turn correctly in the past and end up just sanding an problems away. I want to get a new gouge that isn't so swept back like the one I use, I believe that would be a big help as well.

I am not a turner myself.. I am a 76 yr old steel magnolia who loves to watch wood turning. I love this piece. It reminds me of my grandmothers bread/biscuit bowl that was passed to her by her grandmother...1800's.. Beautiful piece!! I've been wanting to purchase an extension to my 1836 Laguna. I have a couple 23" maple blanks I cut 2 years ago and I'm itching to turn them. I'm going to order the extension today!👍 Enjoy watching you turn!

I recommend it! My only suggestion is to replace the bolts the hold it on and get some that run through the legs entirely that you can bolt in place. I love it & glad I bought it.

Really gorgeous bowl! I have the same lathe, but I don't have the extension or anything for outboard turning. I couldn't carry a piece that large down to my lathe anyway.

Thank you! It’s a great lathe. I’ve had it about 6 months now and no complaints so far. Love the extension too. I struggled to pick this piece up myself lol I have a video coming up where I actually had to have my neighbor help me lol

That is a very beautiful piece! We never see that wood here in West TN. I must say I sad to see all those shaving going on the floor. Just not enough room to use a coring system to recover bowls from the inside. Keep up the good work. Blessing !

Thank you! I have been turning for around 8 years and this is only the 3rd time I have ever worked with it & that just happened by luck as well lol And I agree! I actually tried to core a bowl on the extension a few weeks ago and It ended up catching & bending the only knife I have for my Oneway system so Im out of a coring system anyways until I get a new knife. The downward force on the knife without any back leg support on the extension was rough on the knife. Next time, I will try to add some legs or something to see if I can do it successfully.

Beautiful piece. Love watching the process. I really miss turning, just going to live vicariously through you lol. Is this one hitting the website?

@@andrewmccarn In a few years maybe. Had to sell all my stuff to cover medical bills from some injuries. Now I'm dealing with crazy nerve issues from Fibromyalgia. My hands go numb and super painful most days, so holding the gouge would be a bit scary for now.

absolutely gorgeous bowl. Box Elder is one of my favorites. Good technique and I love the fact that you are using some of the features of your lathe that you don't normally see people use. Great video. I have to ask, how did you dry that piece?

Thank you Alex! This is only my third time turning it but I have loved getting the opportunity to turn it. It dries so nice & quick. Also I love seeing what a lathe is capable of doing past the traditional work, I want to get my money's worth from it lol and to dry this bowl, I just let it sit in my office in front of the AC vent for a few weeks lol

Thanks Donald! Usually the smell is gone once the shavings are cleaned up but my nose has become so immune to the smells now that nothing really stands out anymore except when I work with cedar.

It is beautiful! You should be quite proud. May I ask why you didn’t core it first.

Must have been a gnarly chunk of tree that piece came out of. The ugliest parts of trees make the most beautiful bowls!

Too true! Some of the prettiest woods ive turned have come from rotting pieces. This tree was practically hollow at the base. I was lucky to get a chunk this size from it but glad I did!

I would have loved too but the other week I tried to core a bowl on the extension & it caught & bent the only coring knife I have for my Oneway system so currently out of anyway I couldve done it.

"Firewood" tends to be some of the prettiest I have turned!
