THIRSK North Yorkshire | The Ultimate Walking Tour

THIRSK North Yorkshire | The Ultimate Walking Tour. Thirsk is a historic market town between the Yorkshire Dales and the North Yorkshire Moors, famous for being the home of James Herriot (of all Creatures Great And Small fame). We take a look around Thirsk from the market square clock tower to the James Herriot museum.
Thirsk is about 320km north of London, 230km south of Edinburgh and 35km north west of York. Known for its cobbled streets, bustling market atmosphere, and rich literary connections, Thirsk offers a delightful blend of history, culture, and outdoor activities.
Thirsk boasts a long and fascinating history, evident in its architectural heritage. The town centre features well-preserved Georgian buildings, a market square dating back to the 12th century, and the prominent 15th-century Thirsk Clock Tower, a local landmark.
Thirsk is perhaps most renowned for its association with the renowned veterinary surgeon and author, James Alfred Wight, who wrote under the pen name James Herriot. Herriot's best-selling series, "All Creatures Great and Small," chronicles the humorous and heartwarming tales of a country vet in the fictional town of Darrowby. This fictional town was largely inspired by Thirsk itself, attracting fans of the series to visit the town and experience the locations depicted in the books.
Things to Do in Thirsk:
The World of James Herriot: This interactive museum allows visitors to step into the world of James Herriot's books and explore the life and work of a country vet.
Thirsk Market: Held every Monday, this traditional market is a vibrant hub for local producers selling fresh produce, crafts, and regional specialties.
Thirsk Birds of Prey Centre: This centre provides opportunities to witness a variety of birds of prey in flight and learn about their importance in the ecosystem.
Sutton Bank National Park Centre: Situated a short distance from Thirsk, this center offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside and serves as a gateway to exploring the North York Moors National Park.
Thirsk Racecourse: This historic racecourse, established in 1770, hosts regular flat horse racing meetings throughout the year.
Thirsk is a captivating town that promises a memorable experience for visitors seeking a taste of English history, culture, and the charm of a traditional market town.

Very well done. I never met Dr. Wight, but did talk to him 8n the early 90's by phone from Sanford florida. I have all his books and he sent me autograph plates to insert in them. A lovely man, gone to soon.😢

I was there in 2013. Didn't realize how long a walk it was from the train station, along the race course. Having read all the Herriot books, that's where I was headed. It was quite an experience for me, a Canadian, being in the place where my mind had been having experienced the books.

Was there last year for my first visit to Yorkshire. Went to the James Herriot Experience and loved it. We were there on market day so it was very busy. St Mary's church was where Alf Wright (James Herriot) was married.

I live here - just off the Market Place. My Grandfather was a local cafe proprietor, Church Organist and Choirmaster. My Aune played hockey for Yorkshire and The North and was an 'A' accredited hockey umpire. The Saturday & Monday markets are still alive and kicking but the Internet has hit them hard and there are nowhere near the number of stalls as in years gone by.

I have only seen the name Finkle in northern towns. Elsewhere on the Internet I read that "The Danish language, along with the Old Norse tongue, contained words such as finkle or vincle which implied a corner, bend or angle, particularly one in a narrow, winding street. The word can also mean crooked as in bent, or a short winding street."

The earlier Herriot series was filmed in other Yorkshire towns such as Askrigg in Wensleydale. That is a smaller and, arguably, more picturesque place than Thirsk.

@@user-pq4dv6xf8u it is enlightened if you think this is an attractive town genius. Have watched years of walk vids of cities around the world too many to list, same with England but towns in the Lake district and Cornwall to name a few.
