Thirlmere - Manchester's Water.

Thirlmere reservoir in The Lake District was created in the late 1800's to supply the water needs of the growing city of Manchester. Join me for a look around the lake, at the dam and for a little history about this beautiful lake. Also watch out for a quick fly past from the RAF !!

@@ThatllDoVlog yes a good stop off place between the 2 places you mentioned. Driving north up Dunmail raise and first catching a glimpse of Thirlmere on a sunny day is one of the most beautiful sights you will see in the whole of the Lake District

Missed a notification for this one. So sorry for being late to the party. Lucky indeed that you had stopped flying before the fly past. I can see the headlines now😟 Can you imagine how boring the buildings would be today if a new reservoir was built. The ones from the past look so decorative. Reservoirs in the Peaks are low as well. Worrying what the future may hold. Thanks Paul, have a great weekend

Thank you. Speaking of boring dams I’m hoping to get out to Haweswater early next week, which although it has a very boring yet functional dam does have a submerged village that has started to appear! Hopefully the weather stays decent! 😀

As far as I am aware, before the dam was constructed Thirlmere already existed as a small natural lake, maybe half the size it is today? I think there was also a hall and small village?

You are right. There was a small settlement, Wythburn, towards the southern end of the lake. The most famous submerged village being Mardale in Haweswater. One for another video. Thanks for watching. 😀👍🏻

@@ThatllDoVlog I only knew, as my ancestors actually lived there. My Sister lives near Thirlmere, most of my family live in Keswick, so haven't moved far. I live in Lancashire. I always enjoy your videos, so thank you.

With global warming, this lake isn't going to be able to sustain both Manchester & Cumbria 😢

Doesn’t look promising. I foresee many hosepipe bans in the future. ☹️
