Third Reich In Ruins: Munich Then and Now Part 2

Third Reich In Ruins: Munich Then and Now Part 2
In this episode of WW2 Wayfinder, I return to Munich to look at more Then and Now photos that can be found around the centre of Munich and to gain an understanding of how the city appeared in 1945 when the Third Reich was in ruins at the end of World War 2.

I was stationed in Munich from 1966 through 1967. The Hofbrauhaus was the main point of interest for us. There weren't many 40-50 year old men left then but occasionally they would get together in the beer hall and sing the old songs. Odd feeling. Also our laundry was done at Dachau. Just another town. I got sent to Vietnam in 1968.

Great then and now photos Jon. Interesting fact: Knowing the city would be a target for bombing Hitler ordered photos of it as it stood unblemished with the intent to rebuild to its original state. These photos were later used in the rebuilding process. Thanks for more interesting content.

Glad this popped up in my YT feed - great job! My Dad was there in '45 with the 20thAD and I took him back in 1980. He also had some '45 photos, so we naturally did quite a few "then" and "now" photos. On a somber note - he could not however re-visit Dachau, those memories/recollections he did not want to re-live.

Thank you, that's very kind of you to say so. I'm always concious of trying to provide context to each image and location but without getting too into the weeds on each spot, so hopefully it strikes a reasonable balance!

If You look at around 5:48, You will see to the far right the last remains of the around 1969 modernized Central Station. The whole block behind and to the right used to be the entry hall, about 200m behind are the tracks. They are building a completely new structure here, with subway and city train stations 60 meters below ground. You might find more in the net.

If you start at the Marienplatz most places in Munich are about a 20 minute walk max. The route I took in this was a bit all over the place so I’d recommend Google Earth (or Google Maps) focusing on the old city and picking out the key spots you’d like to see (the English Garden is a must in my opinion - huge open space and beer gardens!!!). If you go to the Hofbrauhaus find out the opening times and be there 10 minutes before it opens. It gets crazy busy there everyday and the food is just ok (but over priced). The beer is good and it’s worth it for that but there are better places to eat!

You forgot to mention that the Königsplatz was completely paved with granite tiles of about 1.5 metres square by the Nazis to use it as a place for their pompous parades. The tiles are clearly visible in the later footage. It was then used mostly as a huge parking lot, and us Munichians had a big controversial struggle to get it rebuilt to its nearly original design from the around 1830. Many right wingers (and neonazis) believed the heroic and quite sterile "Plattensee" (sea of tiles) should remain.

Agreed. Munich isn’t too bad for it but other parts have suffered and I don’t personally believe we can escape our past by destroying buildings. I know there’s a lot more to it than that but in general we have to remember our past so we know where we’re going!
