It is hard to find third places that aren't also religiously affiliated.

Most of outside is not free. Most places that are safe and pleasant outside are privately owned. Where I live we have a free public park, but it's too hot and buggy to sit outside for about half the year.

Food not Bombs has chapters all over the world and serves a hot vegetarian/vegan meal to anyone who wants food. No questions, no ID, no paperwork. 😋

We want to start a permie barter exchange in our area. A lot of us have extra plants and food but not enough to justify the cost of a booth at the farmers market

I love this idea of creating more 3rd places.

I can only think of the following: - religious places (like churches) - libraries (they have events too) and some museums/educational places are more free/volunteer based - hobby/interest centered groups. They may not be the easiest to find but things like birding, gym bros, sports, etc. have club meet-ups.

Sadly, my library is not a good place. There's not enough space for any kind of gathering and of course you can't talk freely because it's a library.

My favorite places right now are parks like skate park/playgrounds/hiking trails. Where I used to live school grounds were a great spot and people were there all the time (there were no gates) but where I now live the school grounds are almost always locked and almost nobody goes to the schools after hours/on the weekends.

When I live in a new place, I always look for a community dinner. Wonderful way to get to know your community

Please go to your local library! They'd love to have you! 😊 most have private study rooms, and many also are near parks. Some (like my local libraries) have free wifi and areas with lots of computers that patrons can use, and often free of charge! I worked in a library for nearly 10 years. I loved the job and I've loved libraries my entire life.

In Russia we have many public parks, squares, and other green spaces with benches. Also, benches all over downtowns, so you can just sit under a tree to take a break from walking around. I definitely missed these aspects of public spaces while living in the US. I like just being at the park or just walking around the beautiful streets and sit down to rest in between.

Great reminder! In Berlin where I live there were many of these places organised by activists, or somehow around the culture of squatted houses. Since the squatted houses were either legalized or the people pushed out of them (for renovation and gentrification) these places disappeared. Only a few still exist. One idea is called "Vokü",(short for Volksküche), an old socialist idea of gathering for meals in selforganised community-kitchens. The produce came from local supermarkets, leftovers, vegetables, potatoes, xstill in good shape, which they would throw away because next morning 5 o clock the next delivery would come. So, it had an impact of being careful with ressources , too. What you are reporting ressembles a bit this "Vokü" idea.

Exactly, the squats were and are amazing at providing community spaces. In Amsterdam, many things are organized in legalized squats like Vrankrijk and Occii, as well as in the still illegally operating ones. They don't just do the voku, but also day cafes where you can just sit and talk to people, meet new people to organize stuff etc. Vrankrijk's voku is amazing. Just don't come barging in as your typical amsterdam tourist, expecting service and choice.

This is such an important topic for us down here in Florida. We have a lot of beauty around us but can really only reasonably enjoy it about 5 months out of the year, the rest of the year we need to find someplace that has ac...but that's hard to come by in Florida. You can't bring food into a library. Sure we have plenty of free parks to go to and free beaches even but my kids can't handle that heat...nor can a lot of other people. And they won't even pass laws protecting workers from heat.

Homeschooling without a premade cirriculum. It can be done well or badly, just like anything else.
