With a big upcoming trip, we were searching for a new camera bag. So we got our hands on a Thinktank Streetwalker Harddrive v2.0 , Lowepro Protactic 450AW II, Peakdesign Everyday Backpack 30L
Big Shout Out to Kyle for his video on the Lowepro, it definitely helped in the decision process:

I recently got the Lowepro and took it on a long road trip. It worked out great as I needed all my gear for the trip. But I think the PeakDesign is a better daily office bag if you only need to carry your laptop and maybe a camera with lens attached without all the extra gear. The Lowepro is overkill as an everyday bag.

I like how you looked at these bags, and the way you were working through how you will use them. I’m in exactly the same scenario, my pro photographer friend talked me into the Peak Design bag. It’s a great bag, well made, quality zippers, well thought out. Problem with PD everyday bags is the dual side entry you mentioned, stuff gets stacked on top of each other, and your always opening the wrong side because you forget how it’s oriented. Like you, the right side dominant thing is real, so opening on the other side is awkward. I’ve been seriously considering the Lowepro for the exact reasons you mentioned, it’s built like a tank, and access appears to be a really good combo of side and complete openings, which is not possible on the PD bag without everything falling out of it. Thank you for making this video, I’m ordering the Lowepro 450, you helped me make up my mind also!! Hope you had a great trip. A follow up video would be great on how the Lowepro worked out, Pros and Cons….thanks 👍

I have the tactical 450 2 for a few months now. I usually carry between 10 to 15 kilogramme in it with frames, super telephoto lens, other lenses, tripod, ... Until now I'm quite impressed how comfortable it is with a decent weight distribution and great hip straps. It doesn't have a "hike" compartment, it's all for camera gears, however you can managed to make room for some food or a spare cloth as the bag is big enought, for me atleast.

Great Video. I could tell within the first 30secs after you started putting your gear into the PD bag that the PD was not going to be the bag for you and your trip.

It’s definitely easier to organize gear from clamshell opening than side only, but you can’t have quick access to clamshell bag. I don’t carry as much as you do but PD zip offers clamshell opening and quick access From side or top, and you can configure the divider vertically to fit large lens. I carry three cameras with lens plus ND filter, small tripod and misc. stuff in a 15L PD everyday zip and I can access all of them without put the bag down. The empty bag is only 2.2 ponds.

Bags are always a very personal thing. I’ve had a Protactic for a couple years but when I bought my Sony 100-400, I found I was always reconfiguring the insides for when I had the lens attached and when I was using more standard lenses. Not very convenient in the field. OTOH, with those big side panels on the Peak Design Everyday, swapping and stowing lenses is easy and if I use two bodies it’s even easier. But then I don’t carry all that other stuff in my daily backpack. It must weigh a ton! I prefer to take just what I need for that day’s shooting. Like I said, it’s personal how you pack and what you need. So these days my Protactic is a gadget bag only for me. BTW, some of those gadgets you stuffed into dividers on the Lowepro could go into the zippered side pockets and top pocket behind the laptop pocket on the PD backpack. You didn’t seem to mention them. Like others have said a post-trip report would be good. Have you done one yet?

Very hard to choose. I am torn between the two. The Peak Design is water proof, the Lowepro is not. It has a rain cover but then you have to remove all external items like a tripod. However, it has a hard shell design to offer better protection and that modular design for external pouches is great for more demanding hiking trips.

Great reviews !! The Peak design bags look nice but the straps are murder after a day on your shoulders well, thats what I found. Loved the bag but it was gimmicky and not very practicable. The Lowepro was great as well but very rigid so it didn't last too long either. The one that did the best was my old Thinktank Streetwalker harddrive version 1 which I still have after over 7 years. Its a bag thats been hit by Scotlands High winds sleet rain and snow as well as the odd sea wave (when I was careless) and still all the zips work the seams are all intact with no tears anywhere. With think tank you get what you pay for.

Great review of your choices, I think travelling, exploring or hiking I'd want to carry some other stuff too, maybe food, snacks, drinks, clothing for weather changes, hat jacket, sun lotion etc ..and the more camera equipment it fits, the more you have to carry, imagine the weight of all that stuff on a trip. I'd certainly not travel carrying stuff I would not use. Maybe going to a gig you'd not be carrying it that much you'd leave the stuff you don't need it in the car. Love the side access on the PD and the Tactical though.
