I used to commute 11 miles to work on a bicycle. Got fed up with Scottish wind and rain, went to buy a scooter. Ended up with an MT125, rode that for a year, decided I was a ‘biker’, passed DAS at 34 yo, bought CBR650F, then 6 months later a Bandit 1250.

Hi Spicy! Great video. Your channel was one of the key channels that made me decide to become a biker. I used to find the biking community quite intimidating; and when you start to express an interest in bikes, its very daunting going into a bike shop not knowing anything about bikes at all. But I did it, got my CBT rode a lexmoto venom for about a year, did my direct access and got my 1st big bike a Triumph 955i Sprint RS. Then that got written off at a roundabout due to a car driving into me, I broke my shoulder and took a break from riding for about a year. Just got back on, and bought another sprint RS, and riding her back from portsmouth..I cried in my helmet all the way home with joy. I have had all sorts of fast cars and nothing, I say nothing compaires to a bike..Anyway I am starting out on my channel, drop me an email if you can send me any tips on developing it. I need more video eqipment, but hope to have a decent channel built soon!

Not only was I clear of mind afterwards, I had burned a load of calories and passed a huge amount of bikers, gave them a nod, got a nod back. This has been a great video and you've hit the nail exactly on the head with me. I've been thinking of getting into motorbikes again after many years away from them, but there's something that's stopping me.. It's that final push of just going out there and just doing it, that's stopping me. I have a full licence and enough money to buy one but what stops me is the nagging doubts of safety and bad weather. There's only me in my household and often find owning a big car somewhat pointless. Watching videos like this though has just pushed me that little bit closer to bike ownership again (i blame you Spicy lol)

I hadn't ridden for 25 years or so. I passed my test in 1976 and rode through to the early '90's. In March last year I took the plunge and bought a Honda 650. I went on a back to biking course before I picked the bike up, and any lingering doubts I had were soon swept aside after spending a day riding around North Wales. I hadn't felt so alive in years. I was bouncing, literally, when the ride finished. Like you, I had nagging doubts about safety, but after being back on a bike for a little over a year now, it's not something that concerns me anymore because the pleasure and fun of being back on two wheels is so good.

The only reason why I can't get a bike is because of where I live, my garden is like a 3 to 4-foot drop from the road/pavement so it's next to impossible to get a bike in and out of there, plus in my area bike theft is huge. But... Recently I've been looking at building a ramp to get in and out of my garden and it seems very possible with the right planning and measurements. Also been looking at getting a mini shed type of thing to store the bike with a secure lock in the garden. So I guess the moral of the story is, there is always a way to get a bike. Edit: I've been into bikes all my life but because of where I live I've had to reconsider getting a bike and instead getting a car (which would have cost a hell of a lot more and been well over my original budget) but with some encouragement from family and friends I've decided to stick with getting a bike even if that means making some adjustments and taking the "long route"

I did my CBT last year and have my das booked for end of August ( test centres should be open by then) . One of the major issues I think about getting into biking is the lack of ability to be able to practice and just have fun on a bike. What I mean by this is I live in Essex and there is only one place I could find in the county where you can hire a 125 for a day to go out and have a ride around, there is also no kind of bike days where you can turn up without a bike hire one ( a 125) and just spend the days driving round a track or on round a paddock having fun and getting used to being on a bike. Doing your CBT is all well and good but you can pass and still not feel super confident and having somewhere where you can get your skill level and confidence up before you hit the road would be helpful to a lot of riders.

  • @naughtycoolsailor1240

I totally agree with you. And the thing i find strange is, you can have a day's training (cbt) then you are cast off to go and get on with it on the public highway. Whereas after passing your DAS, there are various advance training courses you can do to improve your skills!!!! This makes no sense. I'd prefer further skills training and an opportunity after my CBT to become more competent and confident but like you, I live in Essex and now I'm trying to think of a quiet place I can take my 125 (when I purchase one) to practice and get familiar with the controls again (did my CBT a year ago & then began saving for a bike)

If you don't already have a car license at the moemnt, you can't get any driving lessons unless you're a key worker. Most of the driving instructors are restricting that further to NHS only as well. However, most of the motorcycle riding training schools should now open. So a motorcycle might be your only option if you want some form of transport. Don't forget that if you do already have a full car license, and passed your driving test before feb 2001 you can ride 50cc on your license. For anyone who passed their driving test after feb 2001 if you do the CBT course, you'll be able to ride 125cc for a year, but also activate the 50cc part of your full car license. Allowing you to ride 50cc forever, with no L plates. www.gov.uk/motorcycle-cbt/car-driving-licence

I wish it were that easy to get riding here... here you need riding lessons followed by theoretical and practical exams, which are expensive, even for 49cc scooters. Even for a 125cc you need a A2 license at minimum. I think more people would leave their car to ride (and reduce congestion) if 125cc were allowed to be ridden with a car license and maybe a one day training course or something.

In my first year of riding, fresh out of my CBT. old man bought me my first YBR125 and its definitely a new experience, coming from somebody who always said they would never ride. the hardest part is that its easy to get lost in the modicum of information that's out there, especially when it comes to maintenance, while does stress you out initially, gives a good satisfaction upon fixing the issue In concerns to everyone riding bikes? I totally agree, but i also believe that people not riding bikes (car drivers in general) SHOULD take a CBT at the very least to understand and maintain the mentality of a biker's perception, in the sense that they wouldn't be a dick on the road to bikers if they understood what they were doing (primarily because the amount of people that get arsey over filtering is unreal), but could possibly reduce road accidents when everyone knows the same rules.

I got my cbt last month because my mrs kicked me out and I needed it to get to work (we’re back togather now happy endings an all) but I will says it’s one of the best things Iv ever done Iv only got a 50cc moped a speed fight 1 1997 it’s 2 years younger than me! But if you are thinking of getting one make sure you get the right gear. I fell off yesterday at a roundabout in rainy Manchester I had to hit the brakes pretty hard but lost grip and came off, the one day I didn’t have my gloves. Luckily I only have a small blood blister and a sore thumb hands wise but I have a concussion from hitting my head my hip is bruised and my whole body just aches and believe it or not I was only going 15-20 mph. Don’t scrimp out on gear don’t wear a t shirt and shorts if it’s warm even on a 50 cc, I would be a lot worse off if I didn’t have some decent clothing on. I would still recommend getting a bike if your smart enough to look after your self and others on the road it’s great just stay safe people :)

Passed my test eight years ago, and it was my only form of transport. I can say I've only had one truly scary, oh shit moment were a young girl in a fiesta almost took me out. "Touch wood" Never had a collision with another vehicle. Come off trying to ride in snow twice. I really don't consider it anymore dangerous than driving a car.

What bike is that? I'm about to take the bike journey at 50... had very high performance cars my whole life, so I'm already calm... but I must have a vehicle capable of the highest performance. Even my daily car has over 300bhp. And cars are awesome by the way. But I've always admired bikes... inparticular, the VFR800. I love the looks, I REALLY love the noise - ever since one drove by me at Le Mans.

Hey Spicy, i have an interesting story in theme "bikes are dangerous": I don't own a car for a long time, for 15 years i have only my bikes. When i ride i feel safe. A few days ago someone asked me, that do i have fear when i ride my bike: I sad no, but i showed the brand new car what i ride when i work, and i said: That thing is freaking me out. The steering is like turning a potentiometer, breaking is like stepping a sponge, acceleration is just like incidental...there is no feedback for anithing, that is dangerous.

Did you know about the chemical reaction S/S has with the Hydrochloric acid in the Harpic? It strips the Chromium from the S/S which makes it more susceptible to corrosion and will guarantee them staining far quicker

Yes I do know, I talked about in during my recent video doing the exhausts of the DRZ. The truth is loads will still do it. whenever I say it's OK to do very occasionally I'm told you can't do that blar blar when I say don't do this people say oh it's fine. Personally on a cheap set of headers I have found no ill effects and no it hasn't accelerated the rust rate. But I can't say that will always be the case and it defo doesn't mean do it to clean weekly. People tend to ignore any caveat I give in videos also. Haha

Probably best to start on a push bike, but I'd say talk to your local bike training school and see what they say. I find a motorbike easier to balance as you're not constantly pushing yourself off balance. Bikes of all sizes are actually quite stable once you get them moving. Biggest problem is getting past that initial fear - there's only one way through that unfortunately.

@@chriscook7049 thank you for your response. Regarding what you guys have put I have spoken to an instructor and he has suggested a pushbike however like u you have said, getting on a bike is somewhat easier as you don't use your own momentum. For Confidence he did say little cruisers or bikes with a sitting position instead of traditional 'superbike' position maybe best to learn on at my size just to feel more comfortable. So maybe I look into that sorta thing? Any budget recommendations?

I don’t know if this will help in your decision but I was a very experienced cyclist when I did my CBT, road and mountain bikes, fixed gear etc. When I first got on a 125 and twisted the throttle that all went out the window. Go and try them at a dealership. Even just sitting on one will tell you a lot. There's no reason to stick to one type. You can sell and try something different. I've got a scooter, a cruiser and a naked as a project. I've also had an r125 which was fun, but less comfortable for commuting for me. I'd also bear in mind how desirable a bike is for theives. Everyone should be free to have what they want, but at the moment living in London, I wouldn't go and spend a fortune on a bike.
