Thinking For Oneself - Arthur Schopenhauer Essay on True Thought

Музыка

Thinking For Oneself - Arthur Schopenhauer Essay on True Thought. Arthur Schopenhauer was a German philosopher. He is best known for his 1818 work The World as Will and Representation (expanded in 1844), which characterizes the phenomenal world as the product of a blind noumenal will. Building on the transcendental idealism of Immanuel Kant, Schopenhauer developed an atheistic metaphysical and ethical system that rejected the contemporaneous ideas of German idealism. He was among the first thinkers in Western philosophy to share and affirm significant tenets of Indian philosophy, such as asceticism, denial of the self, and the notion of the world-as-appearance. His work has been described as an exemplary manifestation of philosophical pessimism. This is a masterpiece for those who come to understand what he's eluding to. The human mind is a very powerful tool that each person must guard very well. This is why he said too much reading is not good for one not to run the risk of one's mind inadvertently being shaped by the thoughts of others to the extent that one does not actually have their own experience in life. But we must disagree with the ending on the matter of sound and our ears. We need our ears as one of the instruments to navigate this world we presently occupy & sound plays a crucial foundation in the nature of reality. Also too much thinking can rob one of experience too. In the end, the ultimate goal for all is "self mastery".

I would argue that reading is not as bad as Schopenhauer paints it to be. Reading and brainwash are two different things. Sometimes it is necessary to read in order to understand a subject from so many different perspectives, so that we can formulate our own opinions or thoughts on the subject matter. Reading isn't like a leash as Schopenhauer makes it seem like to be.

You did not listen well. He said reading should have a purpose. No point reading things that may not be useful for furthering thanking. Read with purpose & not for the sake of just reading. You should listen to this again. 🙏

@@MIHMediaInc But even reading with a purpose lacks the level of open-mindedness required to understand what they are writing. It would lead to us reading what we want to read, which could lead to close-mindedness. I feel like the phrase "read with purpose" could better be replaced with "read to understand"

I’ve been in my own spiral, but indeed, ‘those who have ears; the master shows up’. Yep I stand by that paraphrasing. Thank you for this. Edit ,’is this not the master key?’ The deep exhale makes her smile, knowing. Outside of the vortex, if she realizes she’s the one to bring the key, into this reality, then seeking the door has always been her only path.

"Forever reading, never to be read" (3:22) That is tough for the narrator. Does anyone understand completely even our own thoughts. Just thinking out loud, for myself. I can relate, my poetry can feel like my child, a hard labor and require my own flesh to be born. (6:27)

This is what I intuitively been feeling lately. That too much reading is not good for one's own personal journey. I wish to free my mind from the prison of the body when this life is over. Looking within is key. My goal at the end of this life is not to incarnate on Earth again. I want to go somewhere beautiful and peaceful. I like the somewhat paradoxical statement that there is nothing to learn. Everything you need to know is within you.

Just took this advice and paradoxically did not. I thought for myself. I've come to the conclusion i'd rather read and listen to what other people have to say because if i think for myself yet dont have what i want (purpose, freedom,) then obv i need new input. But overall, i think the middle path is the way. Think for yourself but also let others think for you at times. "All other minds are delegates " Ok. Delegate your thinking to others who's opinion and thought processes have real, tangible results that you wluld like to have or be. Their thoughts can then help you think for yourself.

17:30 speaking of “Authority’s” and so-called “law of gravity” Newton didn’t want “gravity” ascribed to him. And he states that it is “so great an absurdity that I beleive no man who has in philosophical matters any competent faculty of thinking can ever fall into it.” Original letter from Isaac Newton to Richard Bentley (1692) “Tis unconceivable that inanimate brute matter should (without the mediation of something else which is not material) operate upon & affect other matter without mutual contact; as it must if gravitation in the sense of Epicurus be essential & inherent in it. And this is one reason why I desired you would not ascribe {innate} gravity to me. That gravity should be innate inherent & {essential} to matter so that one body may act upon another at a distance through a vacuum without the mediation of any thing else by & through which their action or force {may} be conveyed from one to another is to me so great an absurdity that I beleive no man who has in philosophical matters any competent faculty of thinking can ever fall into it. Gravity must be caused by an agent {acting} consta{ntl}y according to certain laws, but whether this agent be material or immaterial is a question I have left to the consideration of my readers.” - Author: Isaac Newton For Mr Bently at the Palace in Worcester A 4th Lett. from Mr Newton Source: 189.R.4.47, ff. 7-8, Trinity College Library, Cambridge, UK Published online: October 2007

Recommend video by Dr John D. Phlogiston Theory, Mass and the Birth and Demise of Gravity. How the cause of an observation is "interpreted" and "worded" can inadvertently lead to the propogation of an incorrect theory as demonstrated by "phlogiston theory" and the "force of gravity".
