Life is strange. 1989... racking paint & stealing caps off oven cleaner... making a rotary phone call, to let moms know your latch key ass made it home safe, playing some Atari on a black & white tv. Shoe polish insides. Sneaking out when it was dark. Fast forward 34 years & some dude 10,000mi. away is talking to me through a computer, telling me which paint to buy & what proper etiquette is for "chill spots". We have got to be the strangest generation. It's like living in high speed evolution.
Cannot stress the point about breathing in fumes enough. Iz the Wiz was a legendary writer who ultimately died some 30 years after starting writing, as a result of all the paint fumes he inhaled over the years.

Actually came here to say that... Asked shortly before he died, after a long stint in hospital, something along the lines of "...But you'd do it all again, right?" he said (paraphrasing), "Well, actually no - if you don't have your health, you don't have anything..." Of course, like most of us, one suspects that even with the benefit of hindsight, given his time over again he very well might have made the same mistakes again, and of course he's a writer with a legacy that can't be taken away from him. Given time, the elements, and the 'refresh rate' in a place like New York, probably very little if any of his work _physically_ remains, but his place in the firmament of Graffiti is unquestioned. Among other things, he featured prominently in the 1982 Tony Silver/Henry Chalfont film 'Style Wars', the movie which prompted many of us writers of a certain age to get into the game. One really has to give him props though for not having just gone with the cool, throwaway answer that I suspect most of us would have given. Hard to know how many nascent writers his words will have reached, but one is reminded of James Cagney's character in the film "Angels with Dirty Faces" when the Cagney character deliberately sacrifices his 'cool' in the hope that none of the Dead End Kids will end up going to the chair like him. Forgive me for being a bit 'dramatic', but I think a lot of us 'grappers' are given to a romantic mindset! And as someone who's in a wheelchair because of the misadventures of my youth (not actually from writing, but could just as easily have been), Iz the Wiz's answer deserves to be taken seriously... It's great to have a life of adventure to look back upon, but really, without one's health, one _does_ have nothing! In my case, "It's all fun'n'games until somebody loses a leg!" Happily of course, one doesn't have to choose between one's lungs, kidneys etc, and taking their shot at graffiti fame, thanks to those HEPA masks, filters etc... If only they could give us wings when hitting those heaven - spots!

The rule about writing on other people's pieces is really important. Ive seen many people writing on my pieces ( mostly toys ) who didnt want any beef a just wanted to paint when there was no space. Im always chill with them a point out some spots nearby. I think more people should know about this because its a bit annoying at times lol

I just love how butthurt graffiti people are about someone going over their pieces 😂 The culture is mainly all about painting illegally over fellow human’s property. Magically, once experienced graffiti dude comes and paints over the original wall paint, the wall becomes property of experienced graffiti dude and not single not-so-good graffiti dude has any right to illegally paint on that wall. What a great logic COME ON! 😂

@jaqum I believe they'll have issues with it because the fact they most likely risked their freedom or their life to put their work up. Also, the person who went over their work may have subpar work, plus some people just rag the work of others just for the hell of it.

here's another thing you shouldn't do: coming unprepared. if it's cold, make sure you wear something warm. if you need to climb over/onto something, make sure you bring cycling gloves with you (thinner than most other gloves, but still good at protecting your hands from rough surfaces). more generally, always plan an escape route for whatever spot you're hitting up. and lastly, going along with the previous point, find the best way for you personally to carry all of your stuff. grocery bag, backpack, whatever works the best for you, and whatever you can pack up as quickly as possible.

First time and up to now only time i went to go tagging i was going home from a party. I was kinda high and just waited for cars to pass on my local road. Then i tagged on the road signs (not making it unreadable there was a blank spot on there). Quick forward i see a car riding directly to me without headlights on (its night). 5 meters in front of me they turn their headlights on… and the sirens…
the day before yesterday i tried Tofu for the first time and was a bit dissapointed :( it was like EGG COOKED IN THE MICROWAVE but the texture was more dense but then i remembered that there was different types of tofu, so now im excited to try them i wonder if any drinks were made with tofu in them

@@youfosignhere since this is comment reply to yours from my original I’m hoping the following isn’t seen by many…. So in a laneway close to mine there’s not much in it that’s good, basically a lot of crap stuff that’s really crap. I told my friend about one shocking one that I wanted to change and then it came to me after he said it’s probably just kids. It said APEX, and I said that I should change it to AMEX 😂 I’m not that great with a spray can… actually true story, I did well when I painted IKEA shelves with Australian Export, looks pretty cool but it took a year to completely dry if not more!😂 (if only KZread allowed photos in replies!) As I was saying I’m not great with a sorry can, but I did have some blue in an old can, it was decent stuff but it had been clogged… I unclogged it (that in itself was funny, I had to clean myself up first 😂). I only had one tip that with an almost empty can didn’t really work that great… put it this way, my M over the P looked just as shit as the original. I threw the can in the bin of the same place where it was because zero shits given and bins are on the street side and the property has no lane way access. The bin was basically empty but I felt something long and heavy in there. It was a pack of 12 craft beers so I dropped that off on my friends porch around the corner 😂 So.. 1. I unclogged blue paint and got loads of it over my hands and face, I was in my car park thankfully 😂 2. I defaced APEX to AMEX because it deserved it. The laneway isn’t used much, I hope those that use it had a laugh 3. The effort is worth the reward of it being funny and free beers! 4. Australian Export takes a long time to dry on pine shelves when layered on thick 😂

one thing that i fucking hate is toys that litter cans at a chill spot/trackside. stop that shit. i go out of my way to not litter but also I will clean it up if I have to. another thing to consider is that "rules of engagement" are sometimes regional. for example rules like "throws over tags" might not apply in a city like Philly where handstyles matter more. "throws over tags" also does not apply to OG (90s) writers, leave it on the walls until it fades completely. if you know a cool spot or trick for obtaining materials, keep a very tight circle to avoid blowing it up. this means avoiding photos shared publicly or talking about it with writers who are not crew. some things need to be kept off the internet
