Yess the general rule in Spain is “if you cannot fix it in ten minutes, don’t say anything!” I feel like that only applies to young people, because 50+ yo people are so rude! Most of them always comment on people’s hair or clothes or even bodies and it’s so awful and annoying. They don’t even realize that it’s harmful

Fun fact: On Spain a huge part of the population in a Northwestern region called Galicia emigrated after the civil war or during the postwar era to some countries, being probably the biggest in Argentina/Uruguay. Nowadays a lot of people use the nickname "Galician" to refer to all Spaniards, and a lot of them ( specially people who we could call "fascists" here ) get really annoyed. Ofc, I'm not annoyed but happy because I'm a Galician myself xD

For the middle finger it was a mocking action to those who never captured them. Captured archers would have their middle finger chopped off so they could no longer fire an arrow again. It was a way of saying screw you I'm still at it.

@VinceVibe yeah it's true what you say, that happened between English and French soldiers, in the 100 years war. Like the English soldiers were so good with their arches, and the French soldiers started to use bayonets, so the French army started to capture English archers and they cut their two fingers. So the English archers that where free, used to show they're two fingers to the French army and it's the equivalent off the middle finger in other countries.

Honestly a lot of these can be more of how you grew up as well. I personally find it rude to have phones out when you're spending time with friends or family. I believe it's just common courtesy to put it away or at least on silent. Make the people you are with feel respected and loved. Same thing with no commenting on aspects of a person that may make them upset. Great topic though!

It's not exactly forbidden, it's just impolite. It's exactly the same as giving someone the middle finger. And to be honest, we tend to just use the middle finger instead nowadays anyway.

This had some fun cultural surprises that I had never heard of before. Many are just good manners, but some seem unique to their countries.

The v finger gesture facing away (knuckles out ) is offensive dating back to Agincourt when the french chopped off archers two fingers that were used to draw the bow archers would show these two fingers at the opposing soldiers .the same two fingers but reversed knuckles facing yourself is associated with Winston Churchill and is v for victory.

I’m American. I think the phone on the table thing depends because not everyone has the same kind of job. Sometimes people are off of work but on call or just on a lunch break. If my employers call me repeatedly for hours and I don’t answer they aren’t going to like it. If you leave the phone on the table and silence it then you will know if your employer calls you.,I typically have TWO phones. One personal I pay for and one for work that my employer pays for.

It's fascinating about that finger gesture because that's just the American peace sign. So here in the states, people do that gesture all the time. Both forward and backwards. And it doesn't mean anything offensive here. The only offensive gesture here is really the middle finger.

In England, it would be not pushing in queues, saying sorry or excuse me when you bump into someone and not getting north and south mixed up or northern and southern accents. Also don't confuse a Midlander with a northerner. It would also be impolite to go out for drinks with a group and not offer to buy a round of drinks.

We have that in India too :-D In Mumbai we smack the back of the head and say "taaji". I have no idea where it comes from. But every first day after a haircut in school was a nightmare.

The 2 finger thing in UK. Historically during the hundred years war, the English archers would mockingly flash two fingers up at the french, as captured enemy archers would have their string fingers cut off in those days. Last century the same hand gesture meant up yours, as in up... well... yours. Winston Churchill used the same hand gesture when being photographed by the media, not knowing it's meaning. After finding out it's meaning, he flipped his hand the other way and the symbology of the gesture become known to represent V for victory. Pretty sure that during the 60's, the symbology of the same gesture became known to represent peace.

in the wars between france and uk, they capture the archers and cut the fingers, so the winning archers would show their fingers as a insult to the losers, that's the reason behind the V with the hand.

It all gets more interesting to look at

Selling fish in a suspicious way is a thing and relates to the salmon act of 1986. It is to do with selling or buying of salmon that has been caught illegally. When we were young we were told that English archers were so deadly that if the French caught them they would remove a finger thereby rendering them useless as archers and hence those with both fingers who use the gesture to show the enemy that they were ready to kill them. Of course in reality I think we can assume that at that time any archers captured by the enemy would likely have been killed so my thoughts are that it's simply part of folklore.

@@deiniolbythynnwr926 I think archers would have been. Unlikely they'd have commanded much of a ransom. They might have been exchanged or enslaved. Expectation would have played a big part, you wouldn't surrender if you expected to be killed anyway.

The one with the V fingers is definitely common where I live in Manchester as a way to say F*ck Off, but is also used jokingly amongst friends.

If you're in Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland then you're not in England. Just go with UK, it's the safest option.

The rest of Ireland is the Republic of Ireland, entirely different country like France or Germany is. There you'd just sat "I'm in Ireland". Of course there are many in Northern Ireland who consider themselves only Irish and that it should be part of the Republic of Ireland, so they just say 'Ireland'. Look up 'The Troubles' on Wikipedia and it'll explain everything.

Where about in the north do you live? I live in the North East of England, and just about everybody uses the middle finger instead. I can't remember the last time I actually saw someone using 2 fingers.

I remembered going to a restaurant in NYC there was a customer who would snap their fingers at a waiter/waitress the server didn't respond until the customer was polite.

In French, we can say "C'est original..." if we don't like something but we don't want to be rude with the person (like the haircut for exemple).

Yeah, I was thinking that the entire video. Basically everything (besides kissing cheek-to-cheek) is exactly the same in the US.

In Ireland, pretty much just don't do anything illegal or intentionally harmful, and don't treat anyone like a second class citizen, we're all equal here. Other than that, everything should be fine... As long as you don't day Ireland is in the UK, or "I'm Irish" when you mean to say "I have Irish ancestry" or "I'm part Irish".
