    Thank you, glad you enjoyed! I did have a home and economics class but I didn’t attend it. I assume they talked a bit about nutrition, but not nearly as in depth as you will once you enter the program. I took the 3 sciences and math (functions and calculus) and the rest were just arts courses I enjoyed. Really helped me get through my first and second year science and math courses with more ease.

    I want to thank you for posting this. I work in an emergency room setting representing the pharmacy, I regularly interview patients and speak with them. Lately I've been having reviews with my management team and they're interested in hearing where I plan to go next in healthcare. I've been having trouble answering that question. I've been feeling like I have most of the answer but not the full thing. I literally just heard about the dietician role last week and I was excited to hear more about it. Being personally health and fitness motivated and wanting to help people, I thought this might be the career choice for me. Watching your KZread video just sealed the deal. The role seems to combine all of my favorite things, thank you so much for sharing! I'm off to start my own journey into the World of practicing dieticians ✊🏼

    I love your "why" for entering into the field of dietetics. It resonated with my personal and cultural relationship with nutrition as well as what I notice within my family. You mentioned how important networking and internships are, did you have dietetic work-related experience prior to your position as an RD? I'd be interested to hear any thoughts you have to share about this. What an insightful video!

  • @soniadunutrition

    Aside from actual internship, during my studies I was part of an on-campus cafe and we were all either food science or dietetics students. I also did some volunteering at hospitals, a local dietitians group and a diabetes clinic which brought me in contact with more dietitians both already in the field and those similar to my current situation (at that time). In retrospect I didn't have that much networking experience, which is why I do recommend you to have as many as you can. And I'm not saying every experience will give you a guaranteed job down the road, but it can at least help expand your knowledge about the field and keep in contact with others in dietetics.

    Hii I just found your video, I am a junior in hs and have been told about being a dietitian and it’s very fascinating to me, I currently take culinary arts at my school and wasn’t too into the thought of staying in a kitchen for a while, but I had a women come into my school and she is a clinical dietitian, she attended Johnson and Wales and took culinary arts as well as food science and a dietitian class. I’m watching this video to get more insight !

    Hope this video provided some good info! Culinary arts and dietetics can blend well together. One notable dietitian I can think of is chefabbiegellman.com/recipe/ I agree with her reason of mastering both sides, lots of people think dietitians can cook well and provide lots of recipe info (and some can!) but at the end of the day, we are not chefs :)

    Hi! I'm a very shy, socially awkward person and I've never been great in school. After crippling in bed for the majority of covid and failing all my classes, a year ago I decided I wanted to do better so I got my ass up and worked on improving myself. I became more active, conscious of my nutrition, and attempted to get better grades. Now I'm in 11th grade and starting to ponder on what I want to do with my future. After being so wrapped up in the wellness and diet culture I've seen the harm that the spread of misinformation can do to people and I want to stop that. I think this is something I'm really passionate about so I'm now looking into the field of nutrition/dietetics. Do you think a girl... who is not the smartest, who is a bit socially awkward, who is lowkey terrified of presentations, who has very little faith in their own interpretation skills has a chance of success in this field? I'm willing to put in the work, I'm willing to learn, and it brings me joy to see people achieve their goals in health but idk. I'm like hesitant to commit to it cause I think I might fail. Like a year ago I was convinced I wasn't even going to go the college! Sorry to drop this on you but I was hoping for some insight cause I don't know who to ask.

  • @soniadunutrition

    @soniadunutrition

    Chaennie you’ve honestly answered your own question! Everyone has someone smarter than them, everyone is a bit socially awkward after covid (or in general in my case too 😬), and everyone is lowkey terrified before presentations, trust me. But you said you are willing to put in the work, you’re willing to help your future clients, and you’ve already done so much good to help you get on track to what you want, so why do you think you can’t take yourself the rest of the way? Dietitians are not all smooth talking extroverts and patients or clients will appreciate a calm confident professional. So don’t self select yourself out 😊

Because I’m wondering whether I’ll get time to think it through enough or if I’ll have to give possible diet plans/diagnoses on the spot. Hey Jessica, no worries, come back any time! I would say at the beginning it's kinda stressful to know, and you are more than welcome to let your client/patient know this session/initial time with you is just for assessment only and you will return to provide your plan (however much they will appreciate this statement depends on the person hahah). But I think you'll find over time and by seeing lots of patients/clients, you will know what questions to ask and what interventions to provide on the spot.

    Thank you so much for your kind words! 😊 I’m glad you enjoyed the video! Not sure I fully understood your question, did you mean you are nervous about becoming an RD and counseling individuals who consume animal products although you are vegan? If so, I can understand how that would be tough, discussing something that goes against your values. But as a healthcare professional, it’s not about what we believe is right (for us at least), it’s about the client or patient themselves. If they were not ready to be vegan, you would find your conversations to be very difficult. We have to meet them where they are and help them to eat well, regardless of whether they consume animal products or not. I’m not saying to never recommend vegetarianism or veganism, but it needs to be related back to the client and how they feel about it, if it will benefit their health or quality of life, if they feel it will be sustainable for them. RDs need to be responsible and promote science backed evidence over personal values. Of course, you can always be a dietitian that specializes in vegan diets and all thing vegan (ex. vegan athletes, introducing others to a plant based diet, etc.). That will help to attract your crowd. Hope that answered your question, and let me know if you meant something else!

I've been obssessed with food for over a year and I didn't even realize, I've seen all the health problems my family went through. I actually am interested in helping people live better lives by eating healthier. I also get the expanding knowledge part, I do want to be a fitness instructor. I even track my diet, nutrition, intake, what type of foods I eat, and all of that stuff. But the only problems I have are: I have no knowledge of biology or chemistry, and I SUCK at talking to people. Overall, very well thought out video and super detailed 👍

    Hey Sonia! I’m starting my sophomore year of hs in the US. Food has always been a huge part of my life, specifically cultural and healthy eating. I’m quite interested in pediatrics, or learning more about clinical dietitians. But I’m leaning more towards clinical. I don’t know a ton about what the job would actually look like, so I would love to hear what you typical day looks like and how hard/expensive schooling was. Also do you need graduate school or other programs to get started because many entry level job listings require 2 years of experience. Ty!

  • @soniadunutrition

    @soniadunutrition

    Жыл бұрын

    Hey Quinn! I don't work with pediatrics, they're more of a specialized group (unfortunately I'm not as interested as you are in that area), but just a thought, there's children's hospitals out there so you could totally combine pediatrics and clinical! I do more clinical (both LTC and clinic), and it's more individualized interventions, counselling, working with client preferences and needs, providing education and creating/finding resources to give to clients. In LTC it's also more about communicating with the interprofessional team as well as working with the family of the Residents. If you're interested, I have a day in the life video on my channel surrounding LTC. School was challenging but achievable (harder with the clinical courses). The price I would think differs on each university and country, so it depends on where you want to go. The internships we do are not paid (rather we need to pay), and that's unfortunately a longstanding issue with dietetics. I believe a Masters is required for dietitians starting 2024. If you become a dietitian before that you should be grandfathered in, but that would mean you would be less competitive. Hope that answers your questions!

    Great video! Good clear info and straightforward. I'm from Colombia and recently I've been thinking of studying Nutrition and dietetics abroad. I wish Canada :). I started to become interested in Nutrition because I'm trying to go plant based to fight a chronic disease. I want to be vegan too. In this process, I've realized how bad we feed ourselves and how little everyone know about this stuff, hence I realized the importance of it all. Also, I see the need of more vegan dietitians. So, I want to learn a lot about nutrition and be able to counsel people and help with disease treatment and have the scientific background to do so. Moreover, I'm also interested in the sports side of nutrition (I'm not sure if I'm clear enough with what I mean with it). Therefore, I would like to have my own "business" (not sure if I should call it that), in other words, to be like a private nutritional coach both for disease related and sports performance stuff. Now, I just started (literally) to do a little bit of research about the career, degrees and stuff. I want to study abroad, like with scholarships or where I can work at the same time since I don't have money (I'm also a language teacher). Your video was very helpful, though I have some questions, from your experience and according to what I just said: 1) What kind of program I would need or suits me best to reach my goals? For instance, a bachelor's in nutrition and dietetics, or just dietetics, a kind of certificate, idk, I've seen there are many and it's confusing me a little. What is best in terms of knowledge, what I'll be able to do and duration. 2) What countries or universities do you think would be best to study this program? 3) If I get to be a registered dietitian in a country (like Canada or in Europe) that would be valid internationally or how is that? I would really appreciate your help! I wrote way more than what I intended to x)

  • @soniadunutrition

    @soniadunutrition

    Thank you, glad you liked the video! I'll try my best to answer your questions: 1) It just depends on what the degree contains, not necessarily what it's called, like mine was technically Bachelor of Nutritional Science, but you do need a Bachelor's that is considered a dietetics degree, aimed towards being a dietitian. 2) I think the most notable ones (aka ones I've seen create many nutrition resources) include Canada, USA, Australia and UK, but as long as you find a program that, again, allows you to meet all that you need to apply to be a dietitian in that country. It's difficulty for me to say specifically where in those countries, this depends on where you want to live, potential wage expectations, etc. 3) Each country (and province/state if considering North America), has its own association or organization that regulates dietitians. As long as your education and experiences meets their needs, you can likely just fill out an application, pay fees and have some wait time. You can go to the specific country/state/province and contact them to learn about what they need. Hopefully that answers your questions well enough!

    Getting into the Bachelor's program is more straightforward, it basically depends on the grades of the prerequisite courses. Not that much need for extracurriculars. The prerequisite courses depend on which university you want to enter (they will have this info on their website). For my particular university, they need you to submit 5 course grades (1 language, 1 math, 2 science, and another course you got high grades in, such as arts). I'm not sure which country you're in, but here are the universities in Canada that are accredited: www.pdep.ca/accreditation/accredited-program-list.aspx You might consider looking into the fully integrated or partially integrated ones. This means that the required internships are either built into the program or partially built into the program already.

    I don't think I would do anything different -- there was honestly nothing else I wanted to study for 4 years. The only thing I would add is to think more broadly and maybe see if it's possible for a minor (ex. business). There may come a time where you want to expand on your responsibilities and tasks, thus it's great to remain open to opportunities and build a diverse skillset!

  • @soniadunutrition

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hey Lisa! It may be a bit more challenging, but you won’t always be focusing on pure chemistry courses in your degree (it might just be required first or second year as a basic course). In the longterm, when you do become a dietitian that interacts with patients, the main point is: can you communicate clearly with them (in English if that’s the language needed) without using too much scientific terminology? And as for anything, I believe everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses, but if it’s ultimately something you want to do, you will work hard to achieve it. :)

  • @soniadunutrition

    @soniadunutrition

    2 жыл бұрын

    I would say dietetics is a science-based major. There's chemistry, biology, biochemistry. I would say take a look at what program you're interested in and what courses they might require to get in too. In the program I went to I had to go through a year of science courses (like a review of Grade 12). It might be a bit harder without previous exposure to science courses but they're not more difficult than if you had to face any new course. :)

  • @soniadunutrition

    @soniadunutrition

    2 жыл бұрын

    Hi! :) It really depends on your desired program/school. Do they require a certain math course for you to even apply? Check on their website to review the courses you will be taking and if they include math maybe you could take a Grade 12 math course to familiarize yourself with the content. For myself, in the first 1-2 years I took calculus and statistics, but when you get deeper into the dietetics courses you will need to learn how to calculate a few things or understand concepts from statistics, but shouldn’t need deep knowledge in mathematical concepts. Hope that answered your question!

    Hi Sonia, thank you for such helpful video! I recently got interested in becoming a dietician, but my concern is that I’m 30 and been wrecking my brain worrying if it’s too late to start over with such stressful and time-consuming career path. I know, theoretically, it’s never too late but realistically, what do you think? And also, if you don’t mind me asking, how much do you need to pay for, from the start to passing the RD exam? Thank you so much in advance!!!

  • @soniadunutrition

    @soniadunutrition

    Hi Linh! Ugh I know it’s always that age old question of is it too late, but I understand the realistic point of view. 😣 My dietitian track hasn’t been the smoothest and I’m still trying to figure the best path out by trying different things. But for me, there wasn’t really anything else I was interested in as much as nutrition. I wished I was a computer geek cause they can make $$ easily, but I’m not. So I think an important question you should ask yourself (after researching about different career types): can I stick to this and want to learn more about this area in the years to come? Another thing to consider is where you want to study. For Americans, you will now need a Masters degree to practice as a dietitian. I can’t answer the tuition question though because I honestly can’t remember but also it depends on which school you go and if you’re a local student etc. The exam wasn’t too pricey, my internship was included in the program fees, the yearly fee for my province is $600+ with mandatory liability insurance which the price can differ on. I pay ~$270 a year. And also money to pay for continuing education but that seems very common for most careers.

    Thank you for replying Sonia! I’ve never really known what my “passion” was, so I chose a Design major because that was the only thing that I was interested in at the time, but time went by, I got burned out and so tired of having to always be creative. But then, having seen my parents and people around me struggling with health issues and food issues, I want to deep dive into the field and be helpful. I did a lot of research like veganism, food for diebetes… and I find out foods have a really strong tie to our health. But you know the internet, its so vast and countless of people are giving out advices, you need to have like a filter to get to the right information. Plus, I really want to understand the root causes of all these chronic illness and how to help. I honestly had no idea you can learn to be a dietician, where I’m from, Vietnam (or at least the environment I grew up with), people either be the doctor, the laywer… all the really smart and high-achieving people or do business to make a living, people don’t really care much about what they put in their body, food is just food. I never think of myself as a smart student which is why I completely cut out the thought of I can learn something scientific or “hospital-related”. If I eventually make this decision to move to Canada and pursue being a dietician, it will be like a change of the century for me 😆 But until then, yes, I will need to ask myself a lot of questions. Thank you and sorry if this is too long, I wish you health and all the best on your path Sonia!

    Hi Manmeet, I haven't heard about the existence of a bridge course unfortunately. ): What you can do is try to contact the Dietitians of Canada: www.dietitians.ca/About/About-Dietitians-of-Canada/Contact-Us But they may redirect you to the province and school from which you wish to learn from. These are the schools in Canada that offer nutrition programs (with or without an integrated internship), you may be able to ask them if there exists such a course you're looking for, or you may just have to get accepted into their program and that's the only way. www.pdep.ca/accreditation/accredited-program-list.aspx I know it's not the streamlined process you were looking for but hope this helps in a way.

  • @soniadunutrition

    @soniadunutrition

    2 жыл бұрын

    Really good question. I usually find what helps the most (at least in terms of counseling clients) include either knowledge about food (we studied to be dietitians, not chefs), about physical activity (we know it’s important, but what exercises are recommended?) and psychology (there are many instances of disordered eating or individuals requiring that counseling vs simply providing education (which I don’t believe we get too much practice on in our studies). Obviously you can take time to see what area you like before adding something else. Like for example if you’re in longterm care and want to stay there you don’t really need psychological or fitness knowledge. For these separate professions, you would need more education or certified training, or you can always take certified courses or continuing education for knowledge rather than a formal pathway. Hope that helps!

    Hi Kristen! In some provinces, dietitian is a protected term, so only those with dietitian training and education can call themselves that whereas you can take a simple course on nutrition and call yourself a nutritionist - basically a nutritionist can be anybody. BUT, this is obviously not recommended (even though there are already people like this) because you may be providing non-science based info to vulnerable individuals and can be reported on for doing so. However, in some provinces both dietitian and nutritionist can be protected terms, but at the end of the day they are both dietitians (ie same training and education). You can check out this site for info: www.dietitians.ca/About/Learn-About-Dietitians/The-difference-between-a-dietitian-and-nutritionis

It can get a little tough if you haven’t experienced it before but probably not tougher than if you would’ve taken it before you got in (for example, my courses in first year were similar to the ones I took in Grade 12). They are definitely courses you want to study carefully for but that can be the same case for many other courses that you would take to be a dietitian. Don’t give up and seek help if you need it!

If you are still in school, definitely try to create good connections as you go through your life/school at places you think may provide an opportunity in the future, or ask around or create connections at your internship placements. It’s a really good question, and one that I can’t answer for you ): Everyone can have a good or bad experience, depends on how suited you are to dietitian roles (skill wise), if you actually like it, how you can connect and build opportunities for yourself. I didn’t have the best start but I know others did well. In the end it all comes down to if you want to do it, knowing what info about a dietitian’s role I assumed you’ve gathered already. Also, a dietitian’s skills that you build in general (investigative, time management, organization, empathy, judgment, etc) are beneficial everywhere. Almost everyone I know has a different environment in which they work in, and they’re all dietitians. I know that didn’t really answer your question, but definitely take some time to explore all your options… and maybe if you’re trying to convince yourself down a certain path, you might already know what you enjoy?

    Hi Lucy! To become an RD the minimum is a Bachelor’s (so 4-5 yrs) but there are also Masters programs that make you eligible as well. You can go upwards to PhD if that’s a goal/interest. The cost depends on where you want to go and where you come from (usually domestic students pay less than international, and universities vary as well). For SURE being involved with the school district is possible. I can’t say I know a lot about it, but there’s a lot of schools who have breakfast or maybe lunch programs, for example.

    Can I confirm what ECE stands for? I believe most or all of the masters of clinical nutrition programs require you to have had a bachelors in nutrition/dietetics. It's a very niche masters so it's likely not open to everyone. The pay I can't say for sure, since honestly both IT and RD roles can vary. I believe IT may earn more.

    Hey Elisha! That is a VERY good question and one that I unfortunately don’t have an answer for. You can certainly begin as a dietitian but I believe a masters or doctorate in public health is likely needed in the end. What may be better than asking me is asking an organization related to dietitians (for example, in Canada it’s Dietitians of Canada) or a school of public health or a professor of your dietitian program to see if a trajectory like this is possible and how to get there. I hope you can reach your goals!

However, I am bad at chemistry and don’t think I can pass organic chemistry. I am 28 years old and don’t want to waste and more of my years wondering around in my career choices. So what I want to know is how much of chemistry is actually utilize as a RD.

    In the first few years of my program I had to retake general chem and organic chem. However, mammalian physiology is what is much more helpful in dietetics. The most you would need to keep from chem is knowledge of the different cycles, as that can be important in understanding and explaining to clients later on. Otherwise we don't dive deep into chem unless you research very in depth into the pathophysiology behind how food is processed or how illnesses are developed

    If you mean to get into the program, potentially. Depends on what the program you wish to go into needs. Once in the program, in the first 1-2 years you may need math related courses like calculus and statistics, but generally speaking when you get deep into the dietetics courses you just need to learn how to calculate a few things but not necessarily needing deep knowledge in mathematical concepts. Hope that answered your question!

    Epidemiology is different then dietetics, even though it took you longer to complete that. You may need to retake the 4 year Bachelor’s in nutrition.
