Anyone in Kauai who told you it is pronounced "poke" like rhymes with "oak" was either misinformed or they were pulling your leg. In the Polynesian language spoken in Hawaii, poke, which rhymes with okay, means “chunk” or “something cut away,” usually by crosscutting. There is no silent "e" in Hawaiian. @@TravelTipsbyLaurie

We stayed at a boutique hotel in Kapaa and walked to Java Kai every morning. Their coffee is amazing. We love that place! So good to know there is a location in Princeville area as well. There is a gorgeous mini golf place between Kapaa and Princeville- it’s so lush and beautiful. I felt like I was at a Hawaiian botanical garden. Kauai is such a wonderful place to visit! We went to the "Allerton Gardens", which is where some of Jurassic Park & Pirates of the Caribbean were filmed and it was well worth visiting. Also, one of my favorite activities was to go on a kayak tour on the Wailua River combined with a hike to a remote waterfall. My two friends and I shared a triple seat kayak and it was so much fun. The "Hawaii Revealed" guidebooks are fantastic and have books for each of the major Hawaiian Islands and I would recommend those to anyone planning a trip to Hawaii. Happy 20th anniversary and thanks for the great tips!

Some tips! For a hole-in-the-wall place to go with amazing food in Kapa'a, head to Tiki Tacos. I'm not kidding; the food there is amazing. Try the kalua pig taco! If you're in Kapa'a and want to stop at the Java Kai location there, you can park in the back very easily to avoid the problems with traffic, but it's true that traffic through town can be very slow. On the north shore, take some time to mini golf at Mini Golf and Gardens at Anaina Hou for the most scenic mini-golf experience you may ever have. And try the Village Snack Shop and Bakery for a mahi sandwich that tastes like it just came out of the ocean; even better, go where Laurie did and try Kilauea Bakery and Pizza! :)

Haha have you read the other comments lol? I could've sworn that's how the gal pronounced it. I will forever not say that. In another video I said pont instead of ponte (pontee) pants and viewers were laughing too. Now my mouth is watering; just not the real thing here.

We are looking forward to being there again next April and we thank you for the inspiration. We are Corey and Brendon Kerkela, a father and son KZread team of travelling archaeologists and we think your content and interests are similar to our and you might enjoy our channel like we enjoy yours. Please feel free to check it out and keep up the good work here.

I'm sorry did you just say poke? like poking someone? I enjoyed the video until you said poke! 😂 It's pronounced poh-kay if you ask the locals. My husband is also a commercial airline pilot and was raised on Kauai. I refused to eat raw fish until I had poke from Hawaii and now it's one of the things I look forward when we visit the islands, cuz mainland poke does not compare to it.

Hawaiian natives have asked us several times to stop visiting. Tourists are using up all of their resources and natives can no longer afford to live in their homeland. There are plenty of other places to visit.
