Things to do in Lyon, France: 2 minute guide to the top attractions

Visitor Vids tourist guide to Lyon, France. Make the most of your day out with our three minute guide to the top visitor attractions in Lyon.
Lyon, France’s third biggest city is a busy commercial and tourist centre in east-central France and a UNESCO world heritage site.
Situated on the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, the historic city centre forms a peninsula called the "Presqu'île" between the two rivers. Here you’ll find the main square, the Place des Terreaux with the impressive city hall and the fine art museum, the Musee des beaux-art de Lyon. Housed in a former 17th century convent, it is one of the largest art galleries in France. A few streets away, the Opera House is the home of the Opéra National de Lyon. The original 1831 opera house was re-designed between 1985 and 1993.
Take a stroll through the slopes of the old silk district, called the Croix-Rousse, which features medieval and modern architecture, to the banks of the river Saône. Here you’ll find the Fresque des Lyonnais mural covering an entire building. It depicts 31 famous people from Lyon and is one of 150 wall paintings in the city.
Cross the river to the district called Vieux (Old) Lyon with its impressive medieval Cathedral of St John, the Renaissance quarter of St Jean and quirky museums such as the Miniature and Cinema museum. In this district you’ll find examples of narrow passageways named Traboules. Unique to Lyon, these 4th century short-cuts pass through buildings and link the streets on either side.
Take a ride on the world's first urban funicular railway, linking the old town to the hilly quarter of La Croix-Rousse and the Fourvière district. This large hill to the west of the city houses the bejewelled basilica of Notre-Dame de Fourvière and the Tour Metallique, a TV tower which replicates the top part of the Eifel Tower. In the Fourviere district you’ll also find extensive Roman remains, testifying to two millennia of urban settlement in Lyon.
Cross back over the river to the impressive science centre and anthropology museum, the Musee des Confluences. Wander through the impressive Place Bellecour the third-largest public square in France, past shops and lively restaurants.
Lyon is renowned for its cuisine and the world-famous chef Paul Bocuse originates from here. No visit would be complete without a meal in a bouchon - a typical Lyonnaise restaurant or a visit on the Rhone-side of the city to the sumptuous Paul Bocuse food hall, a gastronomic delight.

For the traveller from Paris, and that city’s rather monochrome palette of grey to greyer (with splashes of very intermittent colour to relieve the gloom, for Paris knows that it’s a resolutely northern place, and its buildings reflect those often cloudy skies), the first thing that strikes you about Lyon, 250 miles to the south, are the warm colours. Someone described the city’s overall appearance as like a crate of peaches ripening in the sun and this captures it nicely, as the red roofs and sun-bleached, fading stone more than hint of Le Midi, a hop-skip-and-jump down the Rhone Valley (Vienne? Valence? Montelimar?) It’s no accident that Lyon is almost exactly on the same latitude as Milan and Venice, as there is more than an echo of the Italianate in the ochre walls. Lyon is a lovely open city, with significant elevation on one side - reminiscent of Grenoble - looking east over the rivers divided by Presque Ile, across the rest of town. The most charming bit is the oldest bit, as is always the case in most French (and other countries’) cities. I almost gave myself a double hernia trying to romp up Fourviere Hill, but the pain soon eased when I clocked the majestic views from atop. There are also significant Roman ruins up here that are more extensive than I’d expected; a couple of theatres and other sundry bits and bobs. Least said about the Basilica (a sort of Romanesque/Byzantine mess of a mash-up) itself, the better. The reason to be up here are the views. The best church in Lyon is the main cathedral just down the hill. The rest of the time is best spent just aimlessly wandering. The old working-class district of La Croix-Rousse, is a (slightly gentrified) throwback to Lyon’s industrial past; a kind of self-contained village within the city. Place Bellecour, the city’s main square is a big, pompous, unwieldy thing and resembles nothing so much as a military parade ground. You can imagine Napoleon rallying his troops here on his way back from exile, (even if he never did.) But minor quibbles aside, Lyon can easily cope with 3 days of your life. I still can’t quite decide if it’s ‘northern’ or ‘southern’, though; I have always personally marked the start of Le Midi on this side of France at Montelimar, but on a midsummer’s day in Lyon, with the cicadas’ electric buzzing filling the air: this could well be the ‘true’ south. But where oh where are the shutters?!

I love your delightful descriptions of the beautifully rich and historic culture of Lyon. I spent almost 3 days there in May 2022, and enjoyed every minute. I would like to go back some day, maybe spend a week.

Nice presentation and accent, but ( at 0:36) as 'beaux' ( as in Beaux Arts) is followed by a vowel, the silent 'x' is sounded as a 'z', to elide it with the vowel, thus avoiding the glottal stop. So it's Boaz Are, not Bo ' Are.
