Things to Avoid in your Diversity Statement

- Not writing a diversity statement because they don't think their "diversity" counts
- Centering an issue instead of themselves
- Only looking at the diversity statement as an adversity statement
- Treating the diversity statement as an addendum

I'm finding it tough not to repeat myself. My experiences with diversity have deeply shaped how I view the world. I've already outlined a strong framework for my diversity statement, and I want to ensure that my personal statement remains unique and doesn't rehash the same content.

For our method, we typically spend a lot of time in the brainstorming part of essay writing. When you think about your life as a whole, make sure you're compiling a list of many many experiences that led you to where you are. This makes it easier to cherry pick the ones that can relate to the personal statement vs. diversity statement. It's also important to think about the goals of these two essays. With the personal statement, you're trying to convince them that law school is the right next step for your journey. The stories that you're telling should directly correlate to your "why law." Your diversity statement is trying to convince them that you bring a unique perspective and background to the classroom. These distinctions may help figure out which stories should go where! In the past I have worked in an admissions capacity and want to validate the comment about making it a "diversity" statement not an "adversity" statement. The worst experiences can leave you with compassion for others, and adding that little phrase can move your essay from whiney to empowering.
