we got stopped by an older lady at a metro station while were looking at our map for directions. she was super nice and didn't want anything just a few minutes of chat in english. I think she was happy to practice a little :)

Loved this conversation! And yeah, everything you said was spot on, especially the "getting 8 sodas just because I wanted one" vibes. I was sitting with an American friend at a library once just waiting for my Korean language partner to arrive, and then we were going to go off and have our language exchange at a different table. When my Korean LP arrived, he was so flustered that I was sitting with someone because he had only brought two sodas, so he PROFUSELY apologized for only bringing two sodas and gave them to me and my friend, even though he had presumably bought them in the first place because HE was thirsty. This was back in the US, so my American friend was quite confused as to why this random stranger was apologizing for basically nothing and giving her his drink haha.

Oh man I loved this collab.both of y’all are so informative and hilarious together hope we get more videos with you two in the future 😊

I think the subway and bus silence ettiquete can vary depending on the city. When I was in Seoul and Daejeon for sure you need to be quite, but for example in Busan people speak loudly all the time in the subway and bus and that got me so surprised since I was used to the silence haha Also, love this collab with such an amazing youtuber like Billy!

The food thing, like dinner etiquette, weirded me out ... This is very normal around me. You just wait until everyone has their plate, only very young children get to eat when their plate gets there. It's only a bit awkward when a plate obviously has been forgotten 😂

funny thing in Costa Rica we have a collective mindset (latino familia type of thing) and we do serve water to everyone and we wait for everyone to have their food as well. I didn't notice this until recently

This was soooo interesting! And also useful for my next trip to Korea ❤ when I was there the first time I was so fascinated by how some parts of Korean culture were so different and wild to me, but others were incredibly close to my culture (I'm Italian), especially table manners. The last part resonate soooo much with my expat life, no matter how much you've studied, the moment you step into a new country and you're surrounded by real people, native speakers, talking to you about everyday stuff, the panic is real 😂

This is important stuff to know if you want to travel safely and respectfully, thank you! I have to say, silent public transportation sounds like HEAVEN. I always put on headphones and stick my face in a book because it seems like everybody wants to chit-chat on American buses and trains! 🤫

nice, reading a book in the bus would be nice. I usually have to stand for 30mins in the bus cause it's so full in the morning🤢 And kids don't put down their school bags from their backs. Life in Austria😂

Wow! This was so informative! I really wanna go to Korea someday. Also about learning Korean or any language, It's not related exactly, I get what you mean! I actually got a job as a Korean-Eng translator in my country, and I always feel I am lacking. And yea I have improved from before but there's always something I don't know. @@AD7Films That's adorable that you guys got to stay together!🥹💕 I am thinking how sad it is that US migrants forget their native languages, though (in your case, it's 100% understandable!). Here in Europe, many people who are migrants still speak their mother tongue, even 2~3 generations later. Many people can speak multiple languages. I hope some trend like that returns to the US one day. And I'm glad that Korean is picking up in popularity. (I had learned Japanese and Korean since 2009, way before it was cool to learn it😆) It would be cool to see the same trend arising for languages German, Danish, Dutch, Russian etc😊🤗

"they wont approach you" without a kid, i was only approached when we looked lost or confused lol with a kid, i was constantly approached. one guy even stopped his car and got out to talk to us On the subways, 아저씨 tried to make her sit in the old people seats or the pregnancy seat and hold her hand and stuff. so if you have a foreign kid, get in the back of the very last car. that was the best place for us haha i felt so bad for her and worry about if shell want to go back. she did better in 강릉 since we took a taxi everywhere (but thats also where the guy got out of his car to talk to us.) i assumed theyd stare and older people might want to talk to her. but i wasnt prepared for all of that... the kids reacted exactly as i expected. they were SO excited to see her but too shy to speak to her lol it was sooo cute.

for the meal and water thing i think it's basic table manner, im french and i do this since little, my family does too

I hope I go to South Korea soon this year, I just started taking some korean classes but im not stressing out if I need to learn a lot, I got my papago translator XD Ill rely on that

As a Korean who lives abroad, i remember first time when I saw someone at the table serving for everyone I thought it was really nice of the person but at the same time kind of inefficient lol hahah great video! 재밌어요!

The public transportation behavior, the waiting for everyone to have their food and giving out water for everyone is pretty similar in Switzerland

When I first went to Korea, I didn't live in the dorms so I couldn't make a lot of foreigner friends. Most of my friends in Korea were native Koreans, but also they were usually fluent in English so it kind of backfired because I'd be too anxious or impatient to use korean lol. BUT I did speak tons of Korean when I was abroad and my level JUMPED a lot. Honestly though I was mostly by myself, which I didn't mind usually but it also made me too shy to do group activities...

As a Korean the not eating first culture stemmed from a cultural practice where elderly or more respected people eat first.

Well in aussie we also, at least in my family and group of friends we would always serve drinks to everyone first and same with cutlery etc it's just common courtesy I guess

the thing about getting things or buying things for others is nice and i respect it but honestly i’d be sort of annoyed if someone continuously tried to give me water or a soda just because they want one 😭😭 i mean i’ve had this happen a lot before normally with older people in my family but i’ve always kind of hated being offered things i don’t want haha i really respect the idea behind it though

I just wonder how tourist s think they can behave differently in Korea than they do in their own countries. There are good and bad people everywhere. There are good and bad experiences everywhere. Even in the USA or South Africa you will find foreigners religious cults, individualistic people, safe areas, beautiful areas varied cultural experience etc. Korea is not an exception

The weird thing about the US is that when me or my sister like hand over plates and utensils to everyone in our group who are getting food with us before taking our own, they are all always so shocked and like what are they doing but then they are really grateful. Also we've never been to Asia before, it's just that our parents are so we just naturally do things that aren't normal here but are in Asia...

I live in France and the thing with the water is the same :)

He, funny enough, the time went to korea for a month, on the 3rd day, someone stole my luggage 😅, I only had my passport and wallet with me cause that's a golden rule whenever u travel. The worst part, is that I'm from Mexico, where is more common that ur stuff gets stolen and I have never been robbed there XD.

First mistake is what I've been in right now since 2 month and I don't know how to get out of it. Also IT SO HARD to meet Koreans, even though I speak Korean. So I just stick with my friends from my home country but I know this is a huge mistake... And actually no one from my class at the university (I'm taking Korean intensive course) has Korean friends, even though some of them been living in Korea for like 2/3 years. It's incredibly hard to meet Koreans when you are a foreigner...

I had an easy time meeting Koreans. My language level was ok and I don't want to boast but it helps A LOT when you look and dress well. All boys were simping over me😅 Some were 7yrs younger than me😂 Once we were out with our English club group of 30 (out of which only 5 foreigners) and 3 guys bought me icecream at the same time😂 I gave the icecream to my foreigner friends, breaking the Korean guys' hearts😆 (I'm not really into dating, just studied there and have enjoyed the culture, music, and tv for years, even before Gangnam Style blew up)

Hi, I’m just curious if someone can help me understand the video a bit better. I’m about half way through. I’m American learning Korean. I’m older, but I guess I get mistaken for many ages. So I’m listening to it all. You start talking about meeting foreigners strangers so easily and being in friend groups. Be careful of the language level. Question 1: How do you meet those people? Question 2 Are you saying these friend groups happen for everyone, or just for people who usually form friend groups due to their social skills? I ask because the second situation where a Korean person asks you to church sounds like the same situation. Is there something amiss with Korean churches? Do they have fellowship and activities with the churchgoers like we do in the US, or is there something problematic with their churches like cults require all your time, instead of having a service once a week?

I agree with the trust part. However, I did meet a lot of 65+ Koreans, both men and women, while hiking who spoke English and were interested why I was in Korea. I'm not the typical 20 something English teacher ( a bit older ) They just wanted to be my host for that short time. I did meet a pair in Hongdae who asked where to buy something...that is who you avoid or ignore. Why is a Korean asking a foreigner where to buy something? XD

@@NoctLightCloud no. I hiked with the ahjussi or ahjuma and never saw them again. The cults come in pairs in tourist areas and ask you to join them for a traditional tea ceremony. The men I met spoke English because they were business men and traveled to the US often. They were curious why I was in Korea. Just friendly folks nothing more nothing less.

It is in Ireland. And older people or the main guest will eat first. But you can say to people to start if the food takes ages. Even then you can ask if you want to try some of it.

here's another one. Don't be walking around the street drinking soju from a bottle like you are on some tropical island or something. lol

Oofff I know exactly what you’re talking about~ There are times where the collective mindset is very obvious and strong and others where you would think they are very individualistic 🫠🫠 I want to talk about those instances in a video but I need to come up with a good way to explain it for those who have never been here first haha
