Things that annoy the Dutch. Don't make these mistakes!

We have lived in the Netherlands for over a year now, and we find the Dutch to be warm, patient and friendly people. But things can quickly take a turn from warm and friendly to downright pissed off! Here are some things that annoy the Dutch and what you can do to avoid them. We moved to the Netherlands from the United States and love learning about the Dutch culture and Dutch traditions.

As a student, I lived in the middle of the city (Groningen) and I loved how people would just check me out whenever they were in the neighborhood. Nowadays I don't live somewhere where that happens, but I still like it when people just show up, and I know others who do too - so that's not a universal dislike.

Everybody seems to be smoking? At this moment 20,6% of the Dutch above the age of 18 smoke. So that is a minority actually. Next point, addressing the Netherlands as Holland. We should not be mad at this, as it is caused by ourselves. Historically we traded already worldwide, Japan, Indonesia, new York etc. This was done by the west indies company and the east indies company sailing all over the world. These companies were located in the Provinces Holland so this is how Holland as synonym for the Netherlands started. Thank you for this vlog again, I enjoy it every time.

There was a time in The Netherlands when having a certain uninvited guest was a happy experience. Queen Wilhelmina liked to pick a house at random, knock on the door, and ask to come in for a cup of tea and a chat. She said that was the best way to learn what life was like for the average Dutch person.

Most of these I was pretty okay with, but I’ll admit the biking bit got me! Indeed we have a very clear division between cycling lanes, car lanes and the pavement. It’s a separate ‘category’ of road, so if you walk there or cycle on the pavement, then you disrupt the traffic and it’ll even be dangerous for everyone because nobody expects it!

I worked for a fire protection company in Amsterdam called "Ajax" long time ago. One day the Managing Director enforced a rule to have every company car to have advertisement lettering and logos. The dark red Company vans had those already, but the white sedans for the rest of the people didn't. A good idea when you work in the city but not if you have to work outside Amsterdam. Many instances were reported regarding spitting, yelling, throwing dirt at your car, driving or not. The advertising lettering and logos were off the cars in a matter of weeks.

About the unanounced visitors I guess there's a big difference between the north and the south. And maybe between the older and the younger generations. Where I'm from it's still no problem of you show up unanounced and it was completely normal when I grew up. Family and friends never made an apointment, they just came by for coffee. They also came in through the back of the house and not the front door. And if they stayed longer than expected there were enough plates for them to join for lunch or dinner. My mom would then just improvise and open a can of soup or turn on the frying pan.

Hospitality and unannounced visiting has nothing to do where you live , in the south, north, west or east of The Netherlands . It depends on the person who receives the visit, it is about whether the person you want to visit has for instance a very busy life and therefore little free time and therefore finds it more pleasant to arrange something. in he past, most women stayed at home , took care of the household and the children , without a outdoor job and therefore they had much more time and opportunity to receive visitors. Times have changed, also with regard to leaving your door open so that visitors can walk right in. that is no longer possible these days. The risk of getting uninvited guests ( burglars or thieves or other malicious people ) is too high.

I think this was more common back in the day and also in smaller Dutch towns. I imagine in the bigger cities this is more reserved. That said, I think people are quite open to visitors but with the general "calendar culture" its usually better to plan something in unless you are very close to them.

10:22 And related to the queue thing: when I-a normal dutch commuter-have to change trains at Schiphol Airport (which is often the case) many of the arriving tourists do not seem to comprehend one is supposed to queue up somewhat besides the doors so the exiting passengers can exit unobstructed which makes everything faster and bump- and friction free. My point is not this happens; tourists blocking my way out while looking at me like I’m the aberration, my point is that there are very few things that can instantly get my blood near boiling point. But this does. Mainly because obstructing people leaving the train while you’re trying to get into said train is just beyond stupid.

Something I did that absolutely drove the Dutch crazy was learning their language before I went there for the summer. I studied with a Dutch woman, and I acquired her Friesland accent. The Dutch kept asking me how long I'd lived in Friesland, and I told them that I lived in the middle of the United States. They would say, "That's impossible." I spent a lot of time showing people my passport. LOL I also had a problem in a Dutch chatroom after I introduced myself as an American who had learned Dutch as a hobby. I wanted some practice, I said. They all called me a liar! I said I would prove it if someone would let me call them. One man said he was at work, and I could call him there. He said if I was telling the truth, it would be exciting to have a phone call from America. So we talked on the phone in Dutch and English, then we went back to the chatroom. He told everyone that I had told the truth. We had talked in English and Dutch, and he could tell that English was my first language. People said they were surprised, that my Dutch was very good, but nobody apologized for calling me a liar. They did something else, though. Any time somebody accused me of being a liar after that, the other Dutch people in the chat said that I was not lying and had even called someone in the chatroom to prove it. Even so, nobody ever apologized.

Rather than insisting foreigners say "The Netherlands" to refer to our country, I think we should try to make "Netherland" a more popular way to say it. In Dutch, we always shorten it to "Nederland" as well. "The Netherlands" is too much of a mouthful, you will always naturally want to shorten that, it will never stick. And for that matter, I think we should be called "Netherlanders" who speak "Netherlands" as well.

The rule doesn´t count for kids anyway. I was born and raised in the city and as a kid I would go to neighbour kids houses unannounced all the time. As an adult we´re much more expected to call in advance or plan it toghether with the agenda. But even so, if you do show up unanounced it's rarely a problem and often a really nice surprise, as long as you're mindful of other people's time and potential plans and make yourself scarce after the cup of coffee (and a koekje) unless they explicitly invite you to stay longer. It's definitely one of those things you'll hear about for ages though like "it was so fun when you just came by" or hearing it from others like "I heard you just suddenly showed up at that person's door the other day!" so that speaks to the unusualness of it.

You miss one more thing that annoys the Dutch... Never interrupt. When you interrupt in a middle of a Dutch conversation, the message may very likely be lost or unknown. This is unlikely to happen in an English conversation where the message is likely to stay intact and preserved. If you know the Dutch language, you would know why. :)

Eric, I think your tot ziens would become easier, if you took the English seen as pronunciation. Tot seens. The dutch ie, is very close to the english ee. And there's no G in there. Great content, I had great fun! It's weird to see your own country and habits through other nationalities eyes. AND to see you become more and more dutch. I do seem to remember a time where you would not have said "pissed" out loud on your video's. You were seriously censored. I am so happy for you that you are feeling so much more free here! I as a dutchie also name my own country holland, often, as I find "the netherlands" hard to pronounce. I will do it right, once, explain, and go back to using holland. I am being linguistically lazy. --- I quit smoking in 2007, thank goodness, except for pot, haha. And that one I do only use at home. I refuse to bother others with it. Although in summer I might smoke it in my backyard. But others will have their beer or wine, so nobody ever minds if a whiff of weed floats by. As long as the bbq's are smoking away, everybody's happy. (at least where I live. ) --- Zwarte piet. I have such fond memories of them. They introduced me at the age of 4 to the fact there were more people in the world than just little old me. And they were of many colored clothings, and my mom told me, and zwarte piet was an example of many people in the world. I was honored to meet them! They brought gifts! (pepernoten and candy) and joy, and acrobatics and songs! I felt so much love for all of that. It taught me love for new people! Now... those who did not grow up with it (my speculative opinion) have killed it with hatred and a label of racism, where there was absolutely none of that originally in it. It has hurt so many of us, that they so harshly and loudly killed our zwarte pieten! We're not allowed to love them anymore BECAUSE they will loudly yell about racism. Do you blame anyone for not openly wanting to talk about this anymore? And for us who loved zwarte piet deeply to now have to hide this in fear of being made out to be that racist?! And I don't understand HOW this makes me a racist, as they are now EXCLUDING the participation of these black people, representing something wonderful, (which nobody wants to listen to, but is my truth) so how is exclusion a good thing? They say we USE the black people for an "image" that is racism, but that is just not the truth. However....they've screamed louder than the old people who grew up with the love for black pete. How is love of a 4 year old for other people wrong. tell me that?

@@dutchladylover I didn't want to go there either. I want to talk about the loving things we experienced when growing up, loving Sint en Piet. They stood for kindness, generosity, getting to know strangers and them being "good folk". "tis een vreemd'ling zeker, die verdwaald is zeker, ik zal eens even vragen naar zijn naam. Sint Nicolaas, Sint Nicolaas, brengt ons vanavond ene bezoek, en strooit dan wat lekkers, in een of and're hoek!"... So, so many good, loving memories! The initial fright of seeing a very dark, black person, and to then discover they are kind and happy and friendly, and to look at the whole world that way... It taught us "foreigners are wonderful people too"...and for the life of me...how is that message wrong. Anyway, I am so sad about the loss of this wonderful feast, and its meanings. And although I'm 47, and haven't celebrated it for ages, .... the feast being broken hurt a lot. However, I do have one thing I find positive about now. MORE pieten with just soot on their faces, so that the whiter people ALSO can participate as "hulp piet" as we were taught. The inclusiveness of more colors is a happy thing to me, but the EXclusion of black pete, is what is wrong to me. Sorry for the rant. Sore spot. 😢

I do suggest to travel around a bit if the opportunity presents itself as there’s a lot of history and differences between provinces and people to discover; regarding the Amsterdam vs Rotterdam discussion: that’s something between every neighboring town here. You don’t want to hang with ‘those’ people as they’re not as cool as the ones from this village but do note they all bond together over important things - keeping in mind that you can effectively find different dialects every 10min by bike in certain provinces so you can imagine the town rivalries…it’s a relic from the medieval times!

I work for a Portland (OR) based company with an office in R’dam. The office is a mingle of mostly internationals and we have this topic quit often. Another nice addition is, but this could be for every other nationality, that also the Dutch do not receive criticism very well. Not sure if criticism is shared similar as in other countries, as we here to tend to be more direct. Probably this is one of the few moments we tend to sugarcoat what needs to be said. I must add, when i’m in The States it does feel you’re more ignocnito, people tend to mind their own more. People in NL tend to ‘monitor’ one and others more. Something you recognise? Not sure where that comes from…

The thing about the biking tourists is that they expect to rent a bike as a fun, tourist activity in a city like Amsterdam. While for the Dutch biking is not a leisure, it's a serious means of transportation, especially in cities. It's necessary to follow the traffic rules with so much traffic going on. People on bikes expect to have the bike lanes for themselves and will drive fast and won't stop for pedestrians unless there's a pedestrian crossing. My advice for tourists would be to stick to walking and public transport in cities like Amsterdam and Rotterdam and make use of the sidewalks and pedestrian crossings. And if you would like to make a relaxing bike ride, spend a day doing that in the country side or in a smaller town. You will have more space and people will be more relaxed even if you don't follow the rules. It would give you a great opportunity to get a better impression of the Netherlands apart from Amsterdam.

I myself tend to swirl by unannounced fairly often and if I know that they have the back door open I just walk right in and give a yell. Regarding Zwarte Piet, I have no problems talking about it but I do really hate the stance of outsiders labelling this icon as something from the US and using that as an argument to be judgmental. Related to that you missed one thing: we absolutely hate people demanding us to apologize for events that occurred several hundred years ago. None of us were there and those that were didn't really do anything particularly different from the rest of the world. The Dutch are working according to schedule. Also regarding private activities. When the appointment is at 10 am, it should be 10. Not at 09.45 or 10.15. I am usually earlier but then wait until the agreed time. Also, sometimes an end time is indicated because it is required by the schedule. This works fine for me anyway hahaha.

Ik heb ook een hekel aan vergaderingen die langer duren dan een uur.

75% of Dutch people over 15 do not smoke. I think you have an oversensitivity problem (as most Americans do on this subject). As for Zwarte Piet, I saw that now there are no Zwarte Pieten anymore. It is all white with maybe a bit of soot on the cheeks. To me, that is not sufficient. It should really be impossible to recognise the figure. Why not shave off Sinterklaas his beard also in the process? Then we all can see who plays the character. I must be honest, I don't see (tried hard) the objections to an all black pete, but I am not against a pink, violet, or blue Piet. We only have to reneme him Gekleurde Piet or Kleurige Piet, or Kleurpiet, or whatever rhymes in the verses. But only two stirpes of soot, does not fly for me.

The thing about soccer is so real 😂 I am from Utrecht so I support FC Utrecht, but showing support or saying this out loud outside of Utrecht can cause problems! Unless you're in a big group of supporters clearly on your way to a game. Although there are rules and limitations the government imposed on having players support their team when they don't play 'at home', because we had a lot of trouble with people getting into fights. Also, gefeliciteerd. Wat leuk dat jullie opa en oma zijn nu! 🎉🎉

Don't ring the bell on your bike unless you are really pissed off. A ringing bell is a like a big fat curse. Not polite at all. (And: it's 'tot ziens', not 'toxins'.)

Thanks for this video. Being born a Dutchman and having lived in the USA for 1 ywE, i get what you're getting at. You have missed one: French frized without mayonaise. That's what I did not like about America. Noy mayonaise with french fried and funny looks when you ask for it. Thanks again.

There's even a word for beating around the bush (when speaking) and it does have a negative connotation: 'omfloerst' meaning 'without clarity'.
