☕ THINGS I WISH I KNEW BEFORE BUYING A KALIMBA | Kalimba Vlog ✨

Things I wish I knew before buying a Kalimba. These are tips and kind of a guide for Kalimba beginners or those who are planning to buy their first Kalimba. I made it into a silent vlog kind of video so it won't be too boring and I also like those silent vlogs (some of my guilty pleasures). Kalimba can be fun to play but it's nice to have a bit of background about them before you do start playing. These are just things I picked up and found out after buying one and playing with a Kalimba after three months. Hope you learn something new :)

Hi, for all those wondering how to fix dead tines, here’s what I did : take those little pieces of fabric used to clean glasses and wiggle it under the tine. Then, grab the two edges of the fabric and very gentle lift the tine up. And then you can remove the fabric. It works like a charm ! :)

What piece of fabric are you talking about? The cloth? I tried but it would just stretch and not lift up the tine. I feel like you are talking about something else but that’s the only fabric I have with my glasses.

I first bought a wooden kalimba also, and bought an acrylic one for my second and immediately noticed a difference, I love both, they sound so different and I noticed the dead tines too when I was playing the wood one. However, I do feel like they both give a different vibe when playing, the wooden one is definitely more acoustic and gives you a rustic vibe, the acrylic one has a more crystal sound (if that makes any sense, that's the best way I can think to describe it! ) I love them both nonetheless :D

For everyone who plays another instrument that requires short nails, just so you know there are things called Kalimba Fingertips which you can put on your thumb to make it easier to play the kalimba then take it off to play your other instrument I’ve literally just been copy and pasting a message telling people that kalimba thumb picks in the replies to everyone saying they cant grow long nail lol. If you see someone comment they can’t play because they need short nails for another instrument please just tell them they can still play with thumb picks. The kalimba is such a beautiful instrument and it would be a shame if people didn’t play it because they thought they wouldn’t be able to because of their nails.

About the nail thing: your nails also can't be too long because the skin of your finger has to touch the tab before your nail to avoid that ugly "zz" noise when playing one note more than once. 2-3 mm of length is recommended

But I also have arthritic knuckles that those won’t fit in. Face it...I’m a MESS!! I went to a salon and had acrylic thumbnails put on. Thumbnails only. They thought I was nuts...but long nails just get in my way. They wanted to make them nice and long..dragon lady...but I showed them just how short I wanted them. PERFECT. As far as tabs, I can somewhat easily find written tab notations online. But I have quickly learned to absolutely *LOVE* using the kalimba tablatures with the “musical notes” on them. (I am not too familiar with piano music sheets but those would be a fair alternative.) I can’t hardly find K tablatures that I can *print out* on paper. Sure, they have “video” versions but I can’t stand constantly pausing/playing/rewinding videos during practice. Not to mention having the phone screen shut off on me while playing. I prefer paper in front of me. I am dying for April Yang to publish a whole paper booklet of her covers in tablature form. Or any other youtuber who creates their own covers. Dyyying. Anyway, great vid!!! ❤️
