    Funny edits! :) Do you prefer the car scene or being a traveller? On STG, I think you mentioned your love for traveling. Plus, I just binged a few of your videos. The Spain and Tanzania vlogs blow your car videos far out of the water. The passion is unmatched. There is a bucket load of "car vloggers"/channels, so your content (like others) will get lost in the hustle of said pit. There're only a handful of funforlouis-types. Its awesome that geography is your passion. Show us the best of Europe, Africa, etc. P.S: "Joel Wignall" as a channel name was mature, confident and uptown.

    +Baron Winterwell Hi Baron, thank you so much for your comment! Honestly, if I had the choice, I would probably choose travel vlogging over this! However I do really enjoy making videos like this, I can have a lot of fun with them! Interesting what you say about the name as well. Not sure whether to keep it or change it back ..

    @It's Joel OK. First, you can pretty much do whatever you want, so our opinions are just that, opinions. I pretty much agree with Baron. He made me check out your previous videos. You and your two mates seem to love globe-trotting. In comparison to the raw passion of your travel series, the car videos seem like a job to you. Just one example of the few I noticed: On your travel series, you rarely vocally petitioned for viewers to subscribe at the end of the videos, as though it didn't matter to you because you were doing what you loved. You've asked for a subscription in basically every car video. Not saying that's a bad thing. We all have to eat. But... rather than vying for Ferrari and Lamborghini's sponsorships, YOUR obvious passion and superiority in geography can easily garner the attention of GoPro, RedBull, etc. We have the Solomondrins, JWWs, etc with big pocket, plus the numerous Pauls and Delanneys who are all fighting for the very same meal serving. Between a choice of "A weekend loaner car from Ferrari" or "All expenses paid adventure to Japan sponsored by Marriott", the first-rate choice is obvious. Cars vs Boeings. Ferrari vs Etihad. "Goodwood" vs Chinese New Year. SIGH... I wish I paid attention in Geography class. On the name thing, I guess if you're becoming an aspiring car vlogger, - It's Joel - is as tongue in cheek as the others. But your full name - Joel Wignall - would create recognition in the travel world, like The Mr Ben Brown. If this is unsolicited advice, I apologise for giving it.

    Le Fact hey mate, thank you for the advice. I'm deliberately trying to make these "car videos" more intently put together/youtubey, so yes definitely not as raw and spontaneous as the travel stuff, but I absolutely love making these videos, I have to plan them, and then seeing them put together is so satisfying! Unfortunately my two mates have full time jobs and I'm super busy too, however I will be definitely doing more of the content which you prefer when I travel next! Of course I would love to be able to do it all the time!

    You are completely right about "automatic" wipers, BMWs from that era were programmed that way that auto wipers were in some kind of a "sleep mode", until you "wake" them with sensitivity switch.Pretty common thing and general knowledge among us E46ers. The guy that says his wipers are not like that, maybe BMW changed logic behind that system on "updated" models, but back in the beginning of 2000's, it was like that. I also have M54B30 in my E46 coupe, but water temp needle on mine goes rather quickly to "operating temp position", i.e. 12 o'clock pos. ("rather quickly" as in around 10 mins, give or take, second or third gear, flat terrain, RPMS under 2000, tipical city enviroment). But, that means nothing. First, if yours is too slow to "climb" to oper. temp., maybe you shoud check your thermostat. But there are two things to consider here: first - the needle at 12 o'clock position means nothing - it will be at that position basicaly as soon as coolant temp goes above 75-ish °C. Normal (coolant) operating temp for this engine is around 92-95°C. Another thing - my testing using diag software has showed me that, on my average, standard daily routine, at the point when the coolant temp reaches operating temp. (90-ish °C), the oil temp is still at around 65°C (yes, we also have oil temp sensor in our M54s :) ). It obviously will depend on the type of drive, terrain, average speeds during warmup period (even if you don't go over 2500 RPM, which you shouldn't), but as you reach your "12 o' clock position" (I call it just that, because it could mean anything), you really need another 10-15 miutes so your oil gets to operating temp. which is what we call engine's ("real") operating temp.

    Revving the engine to redline on a sportscar engine is good for it. It desoots the engine and keeps it revving freely. I've had a couple of old sports cars and have revved them relentlessly to redline and they both did 150,000+ without a hitch. Keep on top of oil services and other maintenance items and thrash the tits off them and they'll thank you for it. THe mechanic at my local garage talked about a guy with a couple of Ferraris that he cosseted and pampered that were constantly in and out because they hadn't been used as they were designed.Think about it: No engine designer in a sportscar puts maximum power at a rev range that is bad for the engine. It easily tunable to put it lower if they want. The engine is designed to rev that high without any issue. THe opposite option is seen on American Muscle where they make loads of torque low down but are out of puff at 5500. Lighter head gear and lower stroke, lower bore make for high revving high power engines as favoured in Europe. Luv and Peace.

    People don't understand that the whole point of there being a redline is to protect the engine in the first place. Whenever I go near the 4k rev, people be like "yOu wiLl.bR e Ak tH e cAr"

    Doesn't limited slip differential make it harder to kick the back end out?! It controls/balances the distribution of power to the wheels, to keep you moving forward, surely that's not what you want if you intend to drift...

  • @itsjoel

    @itsjoel

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yeah you make a fare point Pete. Essentially, what happens is only one wheel will spin up, making it impossible to “drift”/slide out of junctions. The only way to “drift” this car is to completely lose traction, then control the slide with throttle input, it’s annoying. Used to have an MX-5 which would slide everywhere!

    My question is about boot space, can you get 2 suitcases in the boot, you know the ones i mean, the ones that will hold about 22 kg of clothes etc for the flight to your holiday destination. Also have you had or driven the S Drive version and the Couple? If so which has the most boot space in 1st, 2nd and 3rd if you know this.

  • @itsjoel

    @itsjoel

    6 жыл бұрын

    jezzyby47 hi mate. I'm pretty sure you could fit two of those big suitcases in the boot! And they would probably all have the same size boot!

  • @jezzyby47

    @jezzyby47

    6 жыл бұрын

    Well yes, but the S Drive hard top folds into the boot reducing the boot space - if you look at pics of it anyway when it's folded down. The coupe looks bigger to me as the boot area appears to go up further to the hatchback, whereas the other 2 are boots, not hatches, which is why i asked. Thanks anyway.

  • @itsjoel

    @itsjoel

    6 жыл бұрын

    jezzyby47 so the S drive model you are referring to is a different generation of Z4, the generation after the one in this video. The coupe is a facelift version of this model and has a slightly bigger boot at 320 litres. This convertible Z4 has a 240 litre boot. You can see my latest video where a person easily fits into it.

  • @jezzyby47

    @jezzyby47

    6 жыл бұрын

    Yes it's the newer version of yours. I'm kinda looking at all 3 as they all have their pluses and minuses, but are basically the same car. Just cos your mate fitted in the boot doesn't mean you would get 2 suitcases in there though. My current car is a Volvo V50 but the boot space in there is ridiculously small, i have to put one suitcase on the back seats. Should have got the V70. If i can get 2 in the boot i may get a Z4 cos the fuel consumption is not that much better in the V50 either, and they do look fun to drive.

  • @itsjoel

    @itsjoel

    6 жыл бұрын

    jezzyby47 for me, i didn't buy this car because of its boot space. If you are that concerned about it, get something else! I travel frequently and have no problem fitting a hold all, small suitcase and a drone in the boot. And the newer S drive is a VERY different car to the E85/E86. My best advice to you would be to nerd out on all of the forums to find out some in depth information, then just go and test drive all of them! See how they feel, and you can also take two big suitcases with you to see if they fit! 😂😂

    Oh! there is one hate regarding my Z4 ...it's the door closing which sounds like an old banger ....like metal to metal!! All the rubber lining is there as per trim finishes etc but it just makes a very loud noise I can only guess it is locking into the rest of the body to make a complete chassis / body thing as per the roof less vehicle design. Now you got me going! ....The other thing which I had to change was the electric/hydraulic motor This meant removal of the total roof to find the motor down the left side well behind the clunky door post mechanism closer. Especially in wet climates, I would suggest unclogging the drain with the rubber tube under the car at this point ...it seems to be problem where the motor can be under water due to the small drain plug hole getting clogged with all sorts that runs in between the side of the top and down into what can be three/four litre water compartment if clogged!!! ...check it out! There is a plastic noise reduction box around the motor, this holds water also as it can follow down the hydraulic tubes and into this plastic surround that does not have any weep holes for water to escape. ...design problem in the E85 on behalf of BMW??

    Same here.... the door sound is probably the main thing that seemed to me less than what I associate with the general expectation of fine engineering. I wondered if it was designed for that sound as if it were intended to be more "mechanical," but I'm guessing not. I'm not sure I even accept the notion that it's for greater structural integrity.

    Great vid's. I have yet to do so. I actually keep NEARLY dying a Z4 as a third car for dossing about and abandoning places when I'm working. Last time, I actually bought a Rag Top M3 instead (great...but not as good as the Hardtop version I had). Thing is...NOT a 2 seat, love anywhere car. So...Z4 3.0....OR Boxster 3.2S?! Hmmmm.......?! For ragtop....stop...start moving and stay under 5 mph ish and roof will keep going up or down...but you HAVE to stop. All auto wipers in that era Beemer do that (re auto setting). My ClubSport E46 did it....and at the time, the dealer didn't understand either and messed about for a day!

    Some good points. I had a 3.0i roadster a few years ago and defo have a few things to add to this list starting with the roof motor design, where failure is more a "when" rather than "if" situation! The prefacelift cars like yours also have hardly any sound insulation in the doors making for a horrible clunk when they shut. I found that the interior is quite poor quality in general, stuff like the door handles and seat bolsters do wear excessively. The standard cup holders are great, it's just a shame that the person who specced your example didn't tick that box! Another annoying part was the rubber intake elbow which are prone to failure just like they are in many other BMWs. Also worthy of mention is the ride on standard runflats which is horrible and causes loads of funky tramlining.

    Good video ...just thought I would listen in on what (you) others say about the Z4. I have the 2003 3 litre same as your 'down under' but have the flip out cup holders ...you can have mine, as I don't drink and drive. I see other videos which show supposedly Z4 owners that have 'coded the system' to have the top go up and down from a press of the key FOB from outside the vehicle!! The peculiar thing about these video's is! ...no one shows or demonstrates how to 'code the bloody system' ??? ...which is a bit of bolocks. I purchased the smart top box from Las Vegas and having installed it some years ago ...does all the up and down top plus windows from the key FOB also you can set the speed while driving up to approx 20 K's PH to operate the soft top open or closing operation. So Joel, I may have alleviated some of your Z4 hates. All the best from Perth WA

    As a fellow Z4 owner, don't feel badly about the drinks holders. Like most BMW's of the era and earlier they are pants. I have them and I ask my passengers not to use them. The rain sensing wipers do need to be re-initialized after each start. Common to BMW's until the last 2 generations (F and G series). I suppose that they are designed for markets where rain is an uncommon event (I one heard that it never rains in Souther California). It would be nice if the top would go up at some speed, but on the other hand it only takes 8 seconds compared to 30 for many others. Storage, what storage? But yes the boot is great for a car of its size. Unlike other cars in its category it is possible to slip away for a weekend (with a set of golf clubs and a suitcase). Power band - that is common to normally aspirated 4 valve per cylinder engines - they are high revving. I would love to have had a limited slip differential like the one that I had on my E92 M3. That said, the DSC is quite competent. Steering wheel - a tad skinny (I replaced mine with one from an M roadster - did the same with the shift knob. Temperature gauge - I wish that it measured oil temperature not coolant. I would be happy with a lamp to warn of hot coolant, but knowing that the engine is really ready (warm oil) is more important to me. BMW does that on M cars and some 335's. Thanks again for the fun video.

    On the side of the inlet manifold theres a black plastic box near the sound generator, it is a vacuum valve which opens in the inlet at 4000rpm (if you floor the throttle at 3k and listen for it at 4k you'll hear it) basically there's a metal pin which holds the flap which can fall into the engine when it wears out, mines still like new and my car has don't 80k miles so I wouldn't worry.

Got wedged in and held by valve spring pressure it before it was sucked all the way into the cylinder. Took my mechanic quite a while figure out what was jamming that valve. I was very lucky, no (apparent) valve or piston top damage.

    As far as interior storage you forgot to mention the glovebox, the little oddment tray in front of the central storage compartment....and both seats also have a pocket/pouch at the rear where you can store papers or whatever And there is a storage net in the passenger foothold that was available as an option, and instead of the ashtray you can get a tiny box to put some coins or whatever in. So there is a glovebox, doorpockets in both doors, a central storage compartment, a little oddmenttray in front of that, storage pouches on the rear of the seats, an optional storage net and optional oddments tray instead of the ashtray. I'd say that's quite decent of a little roadster. as far as the automatic wipers go, most cars have that. Its to prevent the wipers accidentally start wiping when you're for instance cleaning the windshield and the contact is still on. If the wipers are in the up position (so off the windshield) and it would accidentally start to wipe, it would damage your hood, causing the need of a respray (which is what? 500quid?) So quite a thought out feature. Thats why most cars have that. As for the power being in the high revrange: virtually all cars have that. As power=torque x rpm x 2pi. As far as torque (what you actually mean), the m54 engine is quite decent (n52 is even better). It delivers decent torque at far lower rpm's than say a boxster of the same age and comparably engine size. So you're whining a bit imho.
