Things I avoid in HomeGoods as an Interior Decorator

If you want your house to be minimalistic and plain, go for it. If you want your house to be jam packed with knick-knacks, go for it. As long as you can safely move around your living space and aren't hoarding, decorate however you like. It's your place and you should feel happy living in it.

Exactly....she would run screaming from my house though. It's like stuffy bookstore-esq decor with old (non matted!) framed black and white photos, old mirrors, literary quotes from my favorite books, and lots and lots of bookshelves full of books and sentimental knick knacks. And let's not forget all the soft fluffy (tacky!) Blankets...and old handmade quilts my grandma made in horrendous colors in the 60s! It's just my style and any interior decorator that doesn't work with the CLIENTS style and pushes their own style onto others shouldn't be designing spaces for anyone. People are individuals who like all different things....which is something she doesn't seem to grasp.

I really hate the matte look in picture frames. It just reads as empty and blank to me. The best picture frames are the ones with goofy things all around them. They have so much more personality and can be used to silently communicate something about the photographed person.

Style is very personal and if you want your house to have shiny frames, worded knickknacks or plain blankets, go for it. Yes you want your house to look pretty but it should also feel like home to you, not like you're a guest at someone else's place. I agree on the zipped covers for pillows though, they're easier to clean than the sewed on ones. Edit: Did not expect this to blow up or for the rude people in the replies but this is a public forum, so i guess I opened up myself to discussion. In my original comment, in no way did I attack the YTuber or what she's saying. Although, what good is an interior designer who doesn't work with their customer's taste and rather against it. My comment is not for the people who actually find her advice useful, it's for those who probably just decorated their new home and were happy about it, but now are having second thoughts (not a bad thing, you can always change it up) or feeling BAD about THEIR taste. It was meant as a little reassurance that your style doesn't have to be what others think is classy or tasteful, if it pleases YOU, it's all good. And if this advice helps you elevate your home, great!! So the ones calling me a narc or whatever other bs over a fucking YT comment, get a damn life and stop meat riding. As for the people who very kindly pointed out the matte vs matted photoframes, thank you, I learned something new.

This is what people pay interior decorators to do😅 i am a hoarder of trinkets so i have a VERY homely looking house for my age but my sister in law has a chic home that follows an aesthetic because that's the first time she has had that opportunity... I think a lot of us also sometimes need to be reminded about why an object may feel off in its environment and i appriciate the content

Way to put down an entire profession 🤦🏼‍♀️ A huge part of the interior designer's job is including clients'preference into overall design. To me personally as a residential designer, clients preference and individuality is more important than style by the book because they are the ones living in the home. I'm there to guide, come up with ideas and help to make sure that technical things line up. If you have an attitude "never trust an interior designer and they lack creativity" then you will never hire one and that's great. No one wants a client with no respect.

So, the cardinal rule of good taste is, "Nothing pretending to be something else." I would be willing to bet that those mushrooms are mass produced fake wood. That's just tacky, no matter what shape it is. I would argue that the more purely decorative something is, the more unique it needs to be. If you bought something like that that someone carved by hand in the 70s at a flea market, cool. Buying mass produced "decorative accessories" from a box store, tacky. Tacky beyond tacky really.

Interesting list . The frame thing is something many people do not think about at all, and that can definitely make a difference in the look of it . The word decor is almost always in seasonal decoration and not deserving of the disdain. The general word decor is a foundational part of certain styles so not really deserving of this list. The removable pillow covers do not make anything look more elevated , just possibly more efficient. The blanket thing definitely helps and is spot on in how it can really help elevate a look of a space, however very few are pet/children friendly , so there is a trade off there possibly. 😊

As someone who is going into interior decorating I’m gonna agree with this sentiment here, and just rephrase it to “avoid bad interior decorators” a big part I have learnt with interior design is knowing when to sacrifice your own design sensibilities for the sake of the client it gives you more diversity in your portfolio and leads to more creative designs. Really your interior decorator should be working with you to help you find your own style and give you advice on what to buy so that you buy quality furniture that’ll last while matching your budget. I don’t agree with what she did here personally if I made this video I would say something along the lines of “my style as a interior designer at home goods” for a caption to make it more clear that this is personal opinions. Edit: I will say that her current caption would’ve worked if she had just shown what brands and items at home goods are actually good. Cause home goods has some really good items and some that break in a couple months it can be very hit or miss and it can be very hard for a layman to tell the difference. I think if she had did that this video would’ve actually been extremely helpful

She sort of deserved it. Even though it was titled as what "she" wouldn't buy....the whole video was telling other people what NOT to buy, even calling a plain fleece blanket "tacky"....when most people don't buy blankets as decor, they buy them to actually use. If you've got kids or pets, those textured blankets are a NIGHTMARE because they get snagged on every little thing and when you wash and dry them they get all lumpy and misshapen. As an interior designer...it's up to her to work WITH her clients style to create a space that is pleasing to THEM, not her. If she had simply said, this is what I like in my home....and not given a negative explanation as to why certain items aren't to be used if you want an "attractive" space according to her then people wouldn't be so bent out of shape about her video. But the title, and the actual content are two entirely different things and she's a crappy designer for suggesting anything as "tacky"....because people are different, like different things and that's perfectly OK.

I think it depends on the person who's decorating their home. Those mushrooms are perfect for a fairy themed room, a sunroom (typically used for gardening), if you've got a cottagecore/fairycore/or adventurecore vibes going on. A dino themed room would be good too. Any decorations are fine to put in your home if you want them.

Eh, some nature is essential to good home design (see potted plants, cut flowers, etc.) but faux nature is tacky. The cardinal rule of good taste is, "nothing that pretends to be something else." Moss wall? Gorgeous. Faux moss figurines? Okay for holiday decor to add texture to a display. Repulsive beyond that. (I would also argue that the more purely decorative something is, The more unique it should be. Something like that that someone made by hand in the 70s from a flea market? Cool. Something like that from a box store? Tacky.)

I agree on the pillows for practical purposes. The matte frames only look good with art in my opinion and if you want a high end look. The matte frames remind me of when I was studying art. The simple matte frame makes the art the main piece.

1... you can buy mats for frames to "elevate" sometimes its worth buying the frame and mat seperately 2...throw pillows with removable covers are easier to wash 3....nature never goes out of style if you like the mushroom get it. Put a peice if drift wood out if you want....4.... blankets that are more textured are harder to keep pill free... decorating should also be functional and easy to care for as well as fitting lifestyles.
