THATS why you look so good! The other day I commented on how well you look but I couldn’t put my finger on why - now I realise that since the videos you made when you first came here you have lost loads of weight but more than that you just have a spark now that you didn’t have before - y you seem to have a zest for life that wasn’t there before. I must admit I stopped watching your videos because I found them too depressing - then you popped up on my feed again and it’s a whole new you, and that’s partly due to the lack of chemicals in British food - absolutely 100% yes. When you think about the state of American foods, the way they lobby American politicians to allow them to keep poisoning food - then the us citizen gets unhealthy and they are at the mercy of the us diet foods consortium and when the person gets so unwell they need hospital treatment where BIG pharma is unleashed on them and they need a go fund me page to pay for life saving surgery - for this to occur as a normal thing in the richest country in the world… that is NOT okay. It feels like people are commodities that the big giant companies feed off and profit from their misery - It’s pretty Sinister. Anyway once again I’d like to reiterate how very happy I am for you to see you shining - literally there’s a sparkle in your eyes that wasn’t there before and I’m so happy for you. All the best x

The US is very backward in its animal welfare. Seaworld, big game hunting, cosmetic surgery on pets, emotional support animals (squirrels on planes?!), shooting gorillas in zoos (see how the UK reacted at Jersey zoo), rodeos, keeping exotic animals as pets etc. Shameful.

I would also put on there, not being bothered by restaurant staff whilst eating your meal. As a British person who has been to the states. I hated that. It just seemed like they just wanted us to eat up and get out. Also the tipping system is just ridiculous now! I prefer UK where I can go in. Get my food and just relax and enjoy it. As a student I remember just going to cafes and sitting in there for hours at a time after just ordering I drink and doing my university work. No one came to bother me and I left whenever I chose to. No dirty looks, no aggressive pressurising. In fact the waiters/ waitressing would sometimes smile at me if they caught my eye( probably feeling sorry for me as a poor student 😂)

Im glad you mentioned the food. As British food has had a bad reputation, which very inaccurate today and based really old stereotypes, of the food that Americans and others experienced during the Second World War and just after that. These stereotypes have stuck around for a long time. Im sure the food in England and Britain back then, was pretty awful. Largely due to limited products available at the time. English and British food has improved massively since then. The quality of food, produced such as meat is very high now, as the laws concerning production, emphasise it must be free of hormones and chemicals. The same with vegetables and cereals. You can still find highly processed food, in supermarkets if you want to.

Driving in the UK. If your vehicle is under 3 years old then it does not require a MOT, however it must be fully roadworthy, i.e. the brakes, tyres, safety belts, lights, registration plates and every thing else must be roadworthy. All vehicles on the road in the UK must have a current road fund licence, if it requires a MOT, then this must be current and the driver must be insured to drive the vehicle. The police cars in the UK are fitted with ANPR cameras, ANPR stands for Automatic Number Plate Recognition. ANPR cameras also exist on the streets. If a car passes an ANPR camera then if there is some marker in the police database then an alarm message would be produced in either police car or a police control room. The police also have access to the DVLA, Driver & Vehicle Licence Authority which tells them if their road tax, MOT are current. There is also an insurance database that traffic police have access to. The DVLA database also has driver licence photos. Driving without insurance would cause the car to be seized and only released by a licenced and insured owner. I think similar things could happen if the MOT is not valid. Driving without a valid licence means the car is not insured. Penalties could mean fines and many penalty points on your licence or even a revoking of your licence. These are the reasons why the MOT is strict about number plates.

No, the MOT system is not the same, the NI MOT is a lot stricter than the GB system and it can take up to 8 months to get a test date, most GB cars that have just passed an MOT test will fail an MOT test in NI as the standards are a lot higher and the test is not carried out by a back street garage.

The same is true for private estates in England. So the MOT laws apply to Sanday in the same way they apply to England, because the UK-wide MOT laws say that you don't need an MOT on private land.

Good video. Can I be that guy and point out a couple of minor corrections? You can drink in a pub at 16 IF you are eating food and the alcohol is purchased by an 18 year old accompanying you. It was designed to encourage responsible drinking within a family having a meal. I agree pubs are different to US bars as pubs are often a local social hub were people may know each other (across ages and classes) and have a pint or 2 after work or on a weekend. Inheritance is mostly taxed and you may be responsible for paying the tax. However you are right that for most employees taxed are taken care of.

I'm sorry to inform you but we do pay a boatload of sales tax in the UK. It's just included in the price you see and you don't have to do the math yourself. We pay 20% VAT (value added tax) on most goods and services. Food (exceptions apply such as good things like chocolate), Childrens clothes and printed media are exempt. Other things like fuel, cigarettes, alcohol have additional taxes added on. The additional taxes are added on first meaning you have to pay VAT on tax.

Great video, thank you :) A note about public transport, at 18 I was diagnosed with epilepsy and so had to surrender my driving licence, but I received a bus pass which I don't have to pay for and I am covered to travel anywhere in England by service buses for free, Scotland and Wales have their own bus passes for their countries, I don't know about Ireland, but this means that I can travel by bus for free anywhere in England and it also works for rail travel within the county where I live and a few places where the county is outside of where I live but starts within the county where I live, this is a huge benefit to getting around and enables me to get to see places cheaply which I wouldn't be able to do without the pass, I also have a support dog and she is welcome too at no cost on buses and trains, I would much rather have my driving licence, but I am used to not having to worry about costs now so it has worked out for the better for me, it wouldn't suit everyone. I can also buy a railcard for a disabled person and this gives me 1/3 off rail fares and my dog goes free too, she is my helper so she is actually working, but of course she gets lots of time off and walks galore :)

Road safety and gun safety. 1,711 against 46,029 road deaths. Bearing in mind that the US population is about 4.9 times greater, US road deaths should be 8-9000 per year proportionately, yet US Road carnage means that the actual figure is about 5 1/2 times higher. US Gun deaths from all causes - 48,830 in 2021 against 26 in the UK in 2022 or proportionately 127! That’s a rate 38,328% greater. There is probably very little that anyone can do about US gun culture and lax gun laws but there is nothing to stop US states introducing much more rigorous driver’s tests on real city streets, as has always been the case in the UK.

Well, most of the taxes that you mentioned are applied in the UK. The only one we don't have is taxing gambling wins: if you win the Lottery they won't tax that though any proceeds from investments you make will affect you. You are taxed on inheritances but the threshold is high enough that a lot of people don't pay. You do have to do tax returns (or have someone do them for you) if you're self employed or have capital gains tax to pay or half a dozen other things. But most people are in paid employment and their employers have to deduct taxes and tell you about it. It also helps that there is basically only one tax at a local level, a tax upon owned or rented property. And there are only the national and the local level. Scotland, Wales and NI may vary tax levels a bit but there is still only the national and local taxes to deal with.

The food one is quite interesting. As you get more time, you should try to buy from local producers and farmer's markets. They are completely different to most American farmer's markets. British supermarkets do a good job at providing good quality food at a reasonable price, compared with most countries. However, the quality and taste of foods is generally at a higher level right across Europe if you buy from local producers. If you shop for seasonal produce, then it will be inexpensive from markets, it is certainly worth spending time to cook from basic ingredients. I completely agree about everything being loaded with sugar, sadly that is also true to some degree, even for premium quality brands, in the UK. Why, oh why do they need to put so much sugar in soup? Once you lose the craving for sugar, the amount in processed food becomes a real 'turn off'. Try switching to a Mediterranean diet, you will feel so much better and the ingredients are not crazy expensive. That brings me to one thing that you didn't mention, it is so easy, and so inexpensive to travel across Europe, the Middle East and North Africa from the UK. We have made day trips to Florence in the past- arrived at 10am and left at 6pm.

There is a serious "binge-drinking" problem still in the UK, and it can affect women more than men. 1) With lower blood volume, less alcohol is needed to make someone "out of it". and maybe metabolic rate differences might be a factor 2) It makes them vulnerable to predatory men

the UK does have different tax levels but unlike the US, they're a bit less obvious. We do have a sales tax, called VAT, but that's almost always included in quoted prices in shops. Occassionally on online sales or buying from industrial suppliers you'll see it quoted seperately. The driking and driving thing might be because teenagers start both at about the same time in the UK and many start drinking years before driving - for n even more balanced take on it, try visiting italy or france! The UK and northern europe is a heavy drinking culture by comparison. Much of what you talk about is down to the UK being more collectivist than the very individualistic US - scotland is even more collectivist and has a much greater idea of the common good than england, which is quite individualistic by comparison.

We really appreciate history here and not only preserve historical sites but don’t rip out town centres and re build constantly which I’ve seen happen in the US. It’s also much safer here I’m sure you agree. Though America does do one thing better than England in my opinion. My dad was a New Yorker and although he lived here for most of his life he always got the impression that English society was very heirachically based compared to America. A president, as head of state, wasn’t supposed to be better than us but one of us, ie an equal unlike the UKs head of state. Just a thought.

Ref income tax. If you underpay your income tax by a relatively smal amount (say a hundred to three hundred pounds), and you are still employed, then the HMRC adjust your tax code so that the next year you pay of the tax owed spread over 12 months leading to a small increase in your deductions. The system, known as PAYE (Pay As You Earn) means that the majority of working people never have to file a tax return ever in their life! In addition, with something called salary sacrifice, you give up some of your wages in return for a benefit e.g. paying into a pension fund - and again it is all sorted out for you!

The tax I disliked the least in the US is the one levied on used car sales. You buy a used car from someone on Facebook Marketplace etc and the government expects you to pay tax on the purchase price, lol. Why? The state already got their tax when the car was sold new. Few people respect this tax, anyway. I once sold a car to a sheriff's deputy and the guy asked me to put the sales price down on the title as $500 instead of the $3000 I sold it to him for.

Unfortunately your views of our tax system may have been seen through some rose tinted spectacles... yes, for most people income tax is automatically (and only) taken out of your wages before you see the money, and yes, sales tax is automatically included in the price you see on the shelf in a shop... unfortunately, after that it tends to go downhill! Taxation for the self-employed is more complex, and taxation for people who own their own Limited Company businesses is even more complex... and the Inland Revenue are unfortunately often NOT that helpful, and are extremely difficult to get in contact with. Unfortunately again, we DO have inheritance tax, and it's a whopping 40% once the value of the estate is over the threshold (£325k) - if you amass some capital and want to leave it to your children, then I suggest you start planning NOW. Agree re: almost all of your comments re: English vs New Jersey food (and you may have a bit of a shock if you return to the US as you'll have to adjust all over again)... except that in London (and also some other parts of the UK, but not as prevalent) you will certainly find excellent (Italian) pizza cooked by excellent (Italian) pizza chefs - these pizzas will often have slight variations dependent on where in Italy the pizza chefs haled from - what type of pizza is it that you prefer (please don't say deep-dish)?
