Things artists SHOULDN'T SAY but often do | Are you GUILTY?

Artists listen up! The things artists shouldn't say - but most of us do! AND, you might be sabotaging your work. So, what is it? See if you can guess.
This was one of the best pieces of advice I've ever been given as an artist. I've taught art for over 20 years and repeated it often to my students. Many have taken the advice and enjoyed a much better journey into the world of art. Some have not and maybe quit as a result.
Join me in today's tutorial inspired by the Bob Ross painting called Reflections of Gold. A stunning snow scene that gave me the idea to use complimentary colours to great effect.
I chose to use a golden / lavender theme for this scene and it really POP's - Try your hand at it and follow along with me. Then follow my golden rule - the one thing artists shouldn't say and continue to enjoy your art.

Hi paul its a beautiful painting and its on my todo list however question paul i havent any of the BUFF TITANIUM paint you used to cover the canvas at the beginning of your tutorial so what can i use instead ? i have a selection of Acrylic paints could i mix up that Buff paint ? And what would you suggest? Many thanks in advance 🐈🐈‍⬛🐶

Great question Sylvia and one I should have tackled during the video. So the answer is yes mix your own acrylic to what ever flavour you choose. I would use titanium white as a base obviously and add a small amount of ochre to make a soft yellow tone. That having been said I've also mixed white with a small amount of yellow to make a pale yellow tone. That also worked well if a little brighter. Just add small amounts of colour as the changes can sometimes be more dramatic than expected i.e. better to creep up on it 😃😃😍😍😎😎

Hi - thanks for watching and the lovely comments. I love the palette knife for those fine grasses too. And the script liner grasses depend on how good the brush is most of the time. I have a box full of them. About 90% are average. So I have a few favourites that just paint so nicely. Have a great week - I did a double take - La Grange - my mind filled with the sound of ZZ Top - Enjoy your tea 😃😍😎

Oh, almost forgot!! Tomorrow our area will experience a total solar eclipse!! I think it would be very neat to see how you would paint a solar eclipse.. maybe a black gesso’ed canvas, with a circle taped on, and a sunburst oil painted around it.. a kind of like your Halloween witch flying over your moon! Happy painting Paul! ☀️🌝

Hi Paul. Wonderful video and great oil painting. It is incredible how much can be achieved with effort and work. I wanted to tell you that I found a few interesting things from my trip. As I plan to expand my palette with several colors, I found a few things related to the white shade. The Rembrandt brand produces white under the name transparent white. It sounds fantastic, but the problem is that it has zinc in it. As far as I'm concerned, zinc white starts to crack after a while and turns yellow faster. But other shades are on my mind, for example Gamblin and Daler Rowny have some great shades that I plan to try. As for an alternative to Led Tin Yellow I found a shade called Nickel Titanate Yellow Pigment Index: PY53. With a little experimentation I'm sure I can create similar shades that will work for me. I also wanted to let you know that I received two new brushes. He shares that they are natural hairs and I think the brand is Tiger. For now, I have 60mm and 3inch, I plan to get more. In the main, that's because of the novelty so far, at least from me. School starts tomorrow and I won't have much time until the end of May. Once again, the video is excellent and calming, and the oil painting is beautiful. Until next time, enjoy your week and happy painting. Ps- Always remember that after the rain comes the sun and the rainbow. That's something my family always says.

Hi Angel - Sound like you well into the science of art! You will almost certainly know more than me about it! I try all sorts of paints and agree some will yellow over time. Thats why I usually stick to Titanium white and tint it to suit. But I also like some of the Lead white from Winsor and Newton. Particularly for wildlife art. It has a nice soft tone that suits light coloured fur. Play with what ever supplies you can get. I totoally get the old family sayings. You dont appreciate the light until you've had a little dark - Bob Ross - Have a great week and dont work too hard 😃😍😎

Wonder what it could be.. I can guess that it may include words like, “no (I )can’t, (I’m) quitting”… when I say these in my thoughts my joy of painting disappears. I’m trying to halt, wait.. and instead say “I need a little break” and “let’s come back to it tomorrow”. See you soon Paul!! I’m thinking this is such a coincidence.. yesterday was a very sensitive, frustrating painting time. I almost gave up. I just think it was too much yet for me to tackle. Looked simple, it isn’t. I’m being honest and I’m just going to practice more before I open any canvases. 😌it’s good to be gentle with ourselves.

I tend to spill the beans about things that didn't go quite as I planned, since it's part of my analysis, my learning process anyways. I'm quite new to painting still, so every painting is still a journey that I have something to talk about. But I think from now on, I should let people enjoy seeing my paintings themselves before I start blabbing about all the bad things. It's a good tip!

  • @PaulRansonArt

That sounds like great advise - hey thats what I said! But yes, its sooo easy to get down in the dumps with a painting. And its also a defense mechanism. I used to think 'if I mention all the rotten bits then I won't hear it from them' Turns out they liked my paintings and as I said they didn't see what I saw and didn't care either. So keep them beans under control 😃😎

I hope some of the new treatments for early onset come to the market soon. Lost a good friend to that illness a while back. She was a real charicter and painting with me at the studio. Her style changed from Bob Ross to Picasso as her illness progressed. We used to laugh and carry on painting. She truly embraced the meaning of not letting a day passing without making the best of things. Happy painting folks - Paul 😃😎

Buff titanium is a great colour but oh so hard to get. To me, buff titanium [ apart from buying a tube which alas, not many art stores carry - matisse make an acrylic version ] is a mixture of white plus yellow ochre perhaps with very little magenta or orange.
