Certain people appreciate stinky cheese. Thats bacteria. English pheasant is stringy and difficult to pluck, traditionally you would hang it up for a few days and let the outer skin begin to rot, it tenderised the flash and made cleaning easier. What Blackthorne hadn't considered, because he was a kid when they went pheasant hunting and his dad did the important bits, is that its a bit more technical than that and Japanese weather, bacteria and birds are different. Theres not much call for dressing game when your an apprentice shipbuilder or sailor.

Historical note: The English were the best in the world at naval gunnery from 16th-19th centuries. It was considered key to national survival from the time of the Spanish Armada on, they practiced harder and spent more time on things like firing faster and hitting targets than anyone else, so this is something where William Adams/John Blackthorne would genuinely be really good at.

When Lady Mariko says to Blackthorne "You will never be free from yourself" in reply to Blackthorne's "My life is mine, and yours is yours" - that's a very Buddhist concept and Japanese are mostly following Buddhism/Shintoism at this point and that was how Hosokowa Gracia/Lady Mariko was raised. The goal of Buddhism is to follow the middle way and to rise above selfish concerns. She's saying that his focus on personal freedom is selfish and you can never elevate yourself spiritually until you put the concerns of others above your own. That's her representing her culture vs his views on freedom. Hosokowa Gracia/Mariko-Sama was a real person who did something similar to similar effect of what they're going to show. There was almost certainly no romance between Adams/Blackthorne and Gracia/Mariko, that's a 1960s/1970s addition by Clavell, but the rest of this is adapted history. There's no room to make a second season. This is going to be a complete story/Mini-series.

The series is a bit disorienting for me cuz I've read the book several times and watched the 1980 miniseries several times, too. Many names are slightly different from book to this series. And it's interesting to see how the makers of this series interpret/adapt the book. The book is full of detail. It's definitely worth reading. This series is well done and compelling. I love your reactions to it. :)

It's important to remember that Yabushige is aware that he has a spy in his village reporting his every move to Toranaga. When you see him admitting things it would be unwise to admit, like how his nephew Omi "planted the wrong idea" in Toranaga's son's mind, it's because Toranaga is acting like he already knows exactly what happened, and Yabushige is calculating that it's better to hew as closely to the truth as possible in order to not have the spy contradict him, and simply hope that he can spin it as innocent. Toranaga acting like this was what he wanted wasn't just to appear ahead of things, it was also to keep Yabushige on his toes by playing him and Omi against each other. Your underling can't stab you in the back as effectively if he's busy worrying about HIS underling stabbing him in HIS back. So by giving the regiment to Omi instead of Yabushige, he sows discord between them while also garnering a little more loyalty from Omi.

You need to follow the dialog closer instead of trying to be Laurel and Hardy. Do you know why it was a great honor for the gardener to kill himself? Do you know that Buntaro was asking for total forgiveness when he placed his swords on the ground and bowed low? John has been there long enough to know some Japanese etiquette, but John being who he is. Only for John. Doesn't it intrigue you why Mariko is always counseling Toranaga? Always by his side or being at his beck and call. I'm sure, with Mariko's talent for words, that diary that she gave Toranaga was a complete psychological profile of Blackthorn, or did you even realize that she was keeping a diary? Do you know that when Blackthorn forced the issue of Mariko's past, he lost any respect that she had for him. Confucianism is Japan's moral compass and the "Golden Rule came from this philosophy. It is their way of life. Mariko would have told her story when SHE though it was right. I have really enjoyed your reactions but this one I can only rate a C. It was good but not up to your standards. Your reactions are always entertaining. Thank you.
