Whenever you see slim-thick it's always big breasts, butt, hips, and thighs with a flat stomach. Certain bodies are in trend and if you have the body you're in trend. My mother used to run miles and up hills everyday at one point. Still had the belly. Sometimes you just gotta accept how you look and enjoy it , because youre not going to be able to look like other people unless you want to indulge in plastic surgery...FR thats just the truth at this point. Getting tons of things done, without getting a speck on your pristine white and tan outfit is the epitome of an unrealistic standard. 😂 I work as a modern dancer and a personal trainer and I have to wear black every day to try and hide all the sweat from work 😭🤷‍♂️😂 white is a color you can only wear while performing. Most Dancers hate wearing white/ballet pink as adults because it shows every curve/roll/flaw on your body and EVERY sweat stain. Most girls I know who wear white leotards in class/rehearsals are the kind that other women look at , and despair 🤷‍♂️🥲 When I was a server, we wore black for the same reason. Its about looking effortless even though you're doing something really hard and NEVER cracking or showing that strain. It makes sense to wear white on social media, because you are essentially performing (or at least bella is) but to impose that standard on real life is just depressing 👀🥲🤷‍♂️. What a trap.

The way people like the Kardashians just shape-shift never ceases to blow my mind. And we’re all so self aware. We know about these trends, surgery, unrealistic beauty standards we know about patriarchy we know it’s bad and yet the cycle continues. I think even if everyone were aware like every single person, yes it’d probably have an affect but I don’t think it’d be as profound as we’d hope.

As a white girl with the concave butt to show for it, it's really scary how not only body parts but ethnic features go in and out of trends. Sure, I can rock into the new decade in my old skinny jeans from the 00s but many friends of mine, curvier, with darker skin and hair, saw their looks celebrated for the first time. They finally felt good about themselves, they loved high-waisted pants being everywhere, songs about big butts hitting the charts. Like, I have always been slightly chubby and I didn't know high rise jeans existed until like 2013 or 2014 (I was like 11/12 at the time and had little autonomy around the clothes that were bought to me) despite my body struggling to fit into anything even mid rise. Thin has always been the ideal because let's face it, that's what is attractive for majorities. It's not even about 'health is attractive', because being healthy size doesn't require one to have concave stomach, the 11 line abs, small wrists, very visible collarbones, weight 45kg no matter the height (those are all recent trends or obsession in Asia) or so on.

One thing to add about Kim's weight loss -- her seeking career legitimacy by changing her aesthetic. We all know how she got famous, and she capitalized on that by embracing her status as a sex symbol through hyper-focusing on her sexual characteristics. There's of course a conversation to be had about society's erroneous proximity of curviness to hyper-sexuality (re: racism, the jezebel archetype), but she made it work for her and propelled her whole family to stardom with it, even putting Khloe and Kylie on in the process. She was actively seeking ways to reinforce her sex symbol status... until she decided that she wanted to be more than that. She started all the businesses, she went to law school, she began championing prison reform -- she doesn't want to be a sex symbol anymore, she wants to be a business woman and a serious professional. Soooo she's gotta look the part by increasing her proximity to whiteness (re: racism, classism). That means a smaller body, less self tanner, lighter hair, etc. She'll still show skin in photos, but that's functionally just modeling now; the engagement with her instagram pics makes her money. It's just work, the same as her legal career and entrepreneurial ventures. And to be frank, she's cracked the code -- as an attorney myself, I see the way some female attorneys look at her as some kind of idol. To many, she's no longer a pseudo-porn and reality tv star, she's a powerful, ambitious, hot business professional -- the same way they would like to be. Grudgingly, I gotta give it to her -- you can say a lot of things about Kim, but you cannot say she's not a great strategist lol

this is my favortie comment for some reason. its well written, it flows, its interesting, its not too obscenely wordy and its not trying to be excessively smart, and its strangely realistic. it gives its examples, sums them up with a fairly easily to conclude statement, and uses that swiftly for the next phrase. i didnt have to reread anything just to get the gist, the small explanations of what some points mean makes it much easier to get the vibe of the comment, and the overall tone and point is realistic- unlike some other comments, which are like "can we all just celebrate our bodies" or whatever overly idealistic, very cushy sounding rhetoric is the easiest opposing equivalent to "curvy bodies r the only good bodies." in comparison, take my comment; my sentences are too long, im listing with no indication, i definitely mentioned the same points twice, I need to cut down with these commas, and I use big words that sometimes just make it harder to read my sentences, not easier.

I have the "Bella Hadid body", we're even the same height. I get told almost everdy day that I "could be a model" and other women are telling me they are envious of my body. I'm like "I only look like this because I'm sick, you're healthy, you should be happy with yourself and live your life". It's very ironic because I'm envious of them, they can eat whatever they want, whenever they want and just live life without obsessing over meal plans every day.

Now I've been advised to try to get it under control by following this strict medical diet (and I'm supposed to add sport to it but I haven't figured out a way to eat enough under this diet to afford being active on top of it). When I talk about how constraining it is in everyday live, I usually get an answer in the form of "oh at least you are going to have a super healthy lifestyle and will look fit". Well, maybe. But at this point I'd prefer to not throw up all weekend just because I've been a bit to indulgent during the week...

Maybe it’s bc my mom was 40 and fucking tired when she had kids, but luckily I never went through the whole mothers living vicariously through their daughters youthful thinness thing. By the time I was 11 and becoming more aware of my body she explained to me that my boobs may or may not grow as big as I’d like and while at some point I won’t look like a child anymore, it would be a long time before I felt like a “woman” and I sure as hell would never look like any other woman in particular. Everyone is built different. And while she had the bones and “bizarrely shaped ass of an Irish peasant built for trudging up hills with sacks of potatoes and rocks” (her words), I was always tinty and had “bird bones” (also her words) that made my baby fat and my pooch look more pronounced. In her age she had accepted that her body would never be the same as it was simply because it was too exhausting for her to constantly worry about that on top of raising near triplets without spousal support. Of course I still spent time picking apart my appearance because that’s what all girls do, but if I was ever in the bathroom or shower for too long my mom would always knock and say loudly, “you don’t have a belly, you have a uterus” and stop my obsession dead in its tracks. I think we could all stand to adopt her sensible laziness lol

I think your mention of your mother wanting to lose weight has more impact on this conversation. Our mothers of the later boomer/gen x generations were teenagers and young adults during the height of magazine culture and that becoming the driving force of toxic body standards. They were raised in their own version of tumblr culture and they still have lasting problems with it that they passed down to us. A lot of us have mothers that talk about wanting to be skinnier, mentioning our bodies in comparison to theirs, and putting intrinsic value on their and our bodies. The insecurities of mothers are often passed down to their daughters. It is no wonder the first couple generations bombarded with tiny bodies on magazine covers produced later generations even more seriously impacted by toxic body standards.

I had a conversation with my mom (I’m a dude, but built similar to her) about body image & diet culture & all that and she mentioned that in the 90s girls were told to jump in front of a mirror naked. If anything moved, you kept dieting. Seriously. I can’t get over that. Teenage girls, critiquing their bodies for being living things that move around. I was lucky to grow up with supportive parents, but still ended up with body dysmorphic disorder, & I truly don’t think it would be any different if I didn’t have social media.

I am the skinny daughter of two bigger parents. My mom has always been on crash diets, has always glorified thinness as virtue, and put me on my first diet at 13 (because I asked her, because I was getting "fat", i.e.: I had hit puberty). My dad has always been proud of his size, but he had to lose a lot of weight because of his health issues and now he feels ugly just because he looks like me. Turns out, I have always had celiac disease and was already malnourished from the start, my ED had only worsened the situation. Now I am recovering again from an ED flare I had in 2020 and feel quite healthy, but I always get mad whenever weight and diets are brought into our conversations in their terms.

  • @TinyGhosty

@@SpoonG Congrats on your recovery, I hope you can keep it going. I understand recovering from ED is a long journey but it is still worth acknowledging and feeling proud of the wins. I am sorry you were affected by this at such a young age and had a health issue previously ignored. It is interesting in a bad way that thinness and dieting always seems to be more important than actual health, even if it is often packaged as a healthy thing. Being nourished and having energy is healthy, not dieting. I really hope the younger generations can break this cycle but unfortunately it seems like social media is going to keep it going for the vulnerable children that cause the algorithim to show it to them. Shadowbanning is not enough, people need to be banned entirely for that content. I wish you all the best of luck! One thing I try to remember when in recovery is that recovering is inherently rebellious. Rebel by eating until full and having energy and fighting against the mindset we are told we should be have.

It’s really something of a loop. On their own the Kardashians don’t have the power and “swagger” to stay relevant. So they aligned themselves with famous black men whom had a proximity to black women. Black women set the trends, the language, and overall pop culture and thus set the hamster wheel in motion for a consistent “feeder” of non-stop relevancy through their proximity to Blackness. There’s a reason why before she married Kanye most people looked at Kim as “take it or leave it” with most people on “leave it.” We had already had our Paris Hilton/Nicole Ritchie era so what else could she bring to the table? How about the selective desirability of Black bodies on a white body? There’s a reason why we call them “Culture Vultures” after all.

the way kim has shapeshifted race over time is truly unmatched. deleted all middle-eastern-ness, added blackness, then subtracted blackness, added whiteness. most of the same can be said for ariana grande as well. also to ur point about armenia being in "caucasia," I think the important distinction here is the difference between race & ethnicity/heritage (& nationality). we lump people of many ethnicities or heritages together based on race, the same way people with the same heritage or ethnicity can be considered two different races based on visual presentation. add to that how race is a product of society and it also changes over time. what was once considered other can be absorbed into whiteness, like the way jews, Irish, Italian heritage was in the U.S. early mid 20th cent. and in kims case, underneath the appropriation (that is to say, if she were to not darken her skin many shades, get extreme BBLs or wear braids/other aspects of black culture), she would have been considered white-passing for decades now. i also think a lot of this shift is related to her entrance into high fashion and it's return to 90s aesthetics & body types (like u said: thinness, whiteness, grunge/punk/rave aest). she wants to wear 90s balenciaga, she cant do that with her 2010s body. ALSO one more thing: we see this shift now that she is a older, a mom, and all about her businesses and being a lawyer. and who are the most disrespected people in society? [older] black women. she wants power and whether consciously or unconsciously she knows that whiteness gets you power and respect whether you deserve it or not.

I’m also in my mid 20s (25) and it feels like we’ve been jerked around so much with body trends. As a kid everyone was supposed to be small and thin, and it was really hard on me as a tall, chubby kid. Then all of a sudden around mid to late high school everyone was supposed to be curvy in all the right places. Now that thin is supposedly back, I’m realizing how arbitrary it all is. All I can do is my best with what I have.

The part about feeding the eating dissorder is very true. I remember being sick and a classmate told me that I was dangerously skinny. My dumb self was smiling from ear to ear being like «woow, you really think that? thankyou!». During my early path to recovery I was at a family bbq party. My aunt came up to me and said «I want to let you know that you look so much healthier. You are turning into a beautiful woman and im so happy for you». My sick self was sooo offended. I didnt let her know that, but the comment lingered in my mind for weeks after that and almost caused a relapse. Cause in my mind healthy meant fat, and beautiful meant curvy. This is almost 10 years ago now and my eating dissorder is a thing of the past. But for the people dealing with friends or family with ED, it is extremly important to be aware of your language. Because our mind is distorded and even the nicest words can be taken the wrong way and cause us to spiral into a dark place. Thank you for an insightfull video🙏🏽

K-pop is so damaging. I say this as an ex fan. I spent my entire teen years avoiding an ED only to develop one in adulthood because I started following Blackpink. I've seen so many girls wanting Lisa's waist and wanting to try the IU diet, using K-pop girls as thinspo. It's 90s heroin chic for the modern era. I think the worst part is that in K-pop, dieting is so normalized. At least back in the day in the west most celebrities pretended to be "naturally thin" but K-pop celebs will just tell you flat out that they ate a banana every day and nothing else.

I feel so much empathy for Bella Hadid because she has said that she had a lot of issues growing up with self esteem due to her mother favoring Gigi. I mean what normal person would let their 14 year old daughter get it nose job That she ultimately ended up regretting because she changed her natural features so much. It's really sad too because even Kylie Jenner is looking older and older because of all the plastic surgery that she's had done over the years and she's not even 30 Edit: When you mentioned the conversation with your mom that struck a chord with me because I had to have a talk with my mom about how her and my grandmother constantly talking about how skinny they were when they got pregnant and how skinny They were when they were my age gave me a complex. At the beginning of this pregnancy I was having a lot of anxiety because I had not lost all the baby weight from my previous pregnancy and I knew throughout this pregnancy I was probably going to pass the 200 pound mark which is something I never thought would ever happen. I had always been skinny throughout my childhood and only gained significant weight with my 1st son So I had to talk to my mom about how her constantly pointing out how skinny she was when she got pregnant and how she only hit 200 pounds when she was 9 months pregnant with my brother and i was giving me a huge complex. She ended up breaking down and apologizing and since we've had a much healthier relationship when it comes to food and weight and things like that but it is definitely a generational curse.

As a person who recovered from a severe eating disorder, I wanted to mention that even though e.ds are very related to body image and diet culture it is an oversimplification to only blame trends, influential people, or beauty standards. Eating disorders can be much more connected to controlling something in your life and having obsessive-compulsive behaviors like counting calories and setting rules about food (restrictive or not). This behavior can become a coping mechanism for some people to try to deal with other emotions and things happening in their lives. The coping mechanism becomes compulsive and inescapable mixed with feelings of irrational fear (of gaining weight, of losing control of the set rules, etc). Sometimes not allowing yourself to eat can be a way of self-harming too. Simplifying things to "they were pressured to lose weight by society", "they wanted to fit the beauty standard" ignores the mental battles and the complexity of the illness. These might be an initial trigger but the reason why it develops into a more severe mental disorder is because of other emotions, fears, and trauma that are already present, not solely body image or weight. That is basically why a lot of people diet, or have a negative body image but never develop an eating disorder. I really enjoyed the video I just wanted to mention why the topics you mentioned are not that closely related to eating disorders. And sometimes developing an eating disorder has less to do with your satisfaction with the way you look and more to do with the satisfaction with your life, relationships, etc.

(this is quite ramble-y so I apologize for that💀) I understand that. I’m still quite young and with the onset of social media and the normalization and fetishization of things like eating disorders on apps like twitter and tiktok, eating disorders and excessive dieting are things that are just normal to people my age, and it’s scary knowing there are kids my age and younger who are going through the same things. However I do think that videos like this are doing their job and advising children to stay away from that stuff. Along with things like talking about in school with teachers when necessary, teamfes like these are surprisingly manageable. I had been starving myself for a few weeks by one point in the summer, and seeing people on social media say things that made them sound glamorous or healthy really made it hard to overcome. Having a safe space in comment sections like this or with a teacher at school really does help, so I think we’re on a path which can in fact, create a safe space where people can heal from things like eating disorders. the next step is to diminish the root cause of them I believe.

I had a Tumblr during it's most hyped era and one word defines: sadness. The purest, deepest, hurtful sadness everywhere everyday. The saddest songs, the saddest texts, American horror story everywhere and every kind of toxic romantic movie/TV show reference would trend on those days. It was gray. I remember deep diving on really sad texts and writing a lot of them as well, feeling mixed about how I was expressing myself and getting better at writing was great but also feeling so, soo sad about it. Didn't had my heart broken, didn't go through any traumatic experience at the time, I have a good family in a peaceful home but I wrote so sad things that I didn't even know I could be able to. Thank God I went to college and eventually left the site but to this day I feel bad about remembering the things I wrote.

I feel you. Same with grandmothers. It’s honestly so sad when you consider how much time we spend obsessing over our weight and thinking life will be better, we are more valuable, etc. if we were just smaller. I’ve heard something like girls in kindergarten start considering themselves “fat”. We miss out on living what short time we have on this earth by letting these thoughts consume us. I don’t have anything profound to say about how we fix this, but it always gets me when I hear my mom talk about herself negatively and then watch my grandmother do the same. I hope we can break this curse for our future daughters.

I think there's three more factors that play an important role in the thin body coming back as a trend : Kpop, Balletcore, and Gen Alpha. Because firstly, K-POP is bigger than ever and girls like Wonyoung or the Balckpink girls ( two of which have clearly stated they have abnormally fast metabolisms mind you) are being looked to by girls my age who want to look like them, even though most of us know that companies, when their idols aren't naturally thin, force their idols on diets ( hell, they don't even have to be forced anymore, Felix of SKZ WILLINGLY went on a very concerning diet to the point where his members were concered about him, and they still are) Also, balletcore is coming back big time, which means whiteness AND being skinny. Loads of former ballet dancers are talking online about their rude teachers, but people love the ballet aesthetic of small, minimalistic, and cozy fashion that they're ignoring the bigger issue which is the exclusivity of ballet and the fact that only certain body types are really even allowed in. Lastly, Gen Alpha, because the younger kids from Gen Z and the older kids of Gen Alpha are finally old enough to start caring about how they look and it's not great. The eldest Gen Alpha kids are 12 which is RIPE for insecurities and EDs, so they're basically replicating the trends that older kids of my generation made popular back in 2014, I mean what prepubescents kid wants to be "thicc" or "sexy" because they don't fully care about that yet, instead they wanna look dainty and pretty like the princesses on TV, and counteract the weight they'll gain in puberty.

with the ballet thing... I agree it's very white and body type selection. depending on where you go you can face a toxic environment. I have a friend who did ballet and quit because at five they were judged harshly for having the wrong body type. however in my experience (although I am a white female with an ideal ballet body type, so my experience may not be valid) at my current ballet school weight and size is not commented on and neither is race. and I'm glad to see more inclusivity in the ballet world. I saw a ballet last night and there was a wider range of ethnicity than in the past, hopefully we get to see more dancers of colour in the future ❤️❤️

people from the post-soviet states aren't really considered white in the 'western european' sense since a lot of those people are usually ethnic minorities in places like russia and the rest of europe it's fair to say that armenians, georgians, etc. are caucasian as a matter of geographical fact but on a sociopolitical level most of them wouldn't consider themselves 'white' in their own countries or within the borders of the former USSR but in america it's easy for them to assimilate into the organ of whiteness

I'm Armenian myself and I would consider myself more closely related to Middle Easterners than white people, so MENA (Middle Eastern & North African). But really race is all just a social construct and the black/white/asian/hispanic/etc. categories do not represent the real world and its more mixed categories

@@serinab Thanks for your perspective as an Armenian person. It's a little funny to me what you've said, though, because I'm MENA and we are considered white in the US (maybe other places too?) but absolutely do not have the same white privilege as those with European heritage. But it puts us in a weird position because folks wanna point to the fact we're classified as "caucasian" to say we're not POC, don't experience bias because of our ethnicity, etc.

To be fair, at this point, Armenian people have been through a shit-ton of historical struggle that they might not as well be 'white' in a privileged way like how Europeans were/are racist to Polish and Irish people. Hell, every 'white' demographic in the Caucasus region has been through a lot of shit (and still is with Russia and past ethnic conflicts breathing down their necks)

26:00 It's trippy how Madisyn talks about how somebody being concerned about her weight actually buoyed her spirits, because just the other day I was having a video appointment with my psychiatrist, and she said I looked more gaunt, and I had the exact same reaction. I have been spending the last couple of weeks watching videos about fat acceptance, and what I'm finding is that while I'm generally accepting of other people's body types, I continue to be critical of my own. Ironically, that pro-thin mentality goes DEEP.

You made a comment towards the end about mom's being competitive/comparing themselves against their daughters. I think it's an interesting topic you should explore for a future video. I think we all have had a comment or two, or several, where moms project onto their children (mostly daughters) or do the whole 'when I was your age I was det det det' as if to make themselves feel better by putting their own daughters down, and how much damage they may be causing their children.

I feel like alot of the "skinny trend" has been influenced by the popularity of kpop in the US. It's very normalized in kpop to see extremely skinny idols. Alot of these idols very obviously have Ed's, for example Wonyoung from the girl group IVE, and IU has even came out about recovering from and ed. It's to a point where people with average body types are shamed. Recently there's been alot more leeway with diets, but people still want to look like these idols who are super skinny

Yes you hit the nail on so many of these topics. We as a society, consumers have so much more power than we think we do. Tumblr was a great/horrible thing for me during my middleschool/highschool days were my depression was at my peak. It was great bc it made me feel less alone but it also fueled all my demons, it was so bad. And yes let’s take the power back. We can and we should, I know it’s easier said than done however we can though. Anyone going through a rough time rn hope you take care of yourself today

Personally I don’t give a shit about trends and im kinda happy with my body still working on it but getting there. Be you and work on you so you can be happy with you. Seeing you smile and talk about being praised about your past eating disorder is so relatable. I do the same thing. As much as we have healed to no longer put ourself thru those things we put ourselves thru we still feed off that validation. Eating disorders are forever. The mindset never leaves. I think back on the days where I would work out for hours every day and then only eat a handful of carrots or broccoli. Taking my food to the bathroom and having my own munching parties. Taking photos every week to see what the changes are with my body. We maybe nourished these days but our brains are still stricken with these mindsets.

I'm still on Tumblr because it's a very chill place for fandoms now but it's algorithm is still a big problem, lately it has been recommending me random disgusting pro-ana pro-ed posts and while I'm ok, I'm 25 and I have never had an ed so I can just report/block the person and ignore the post, I can't imagine what's going to happen if an impressionable teen finds this kinds of posts. And of course tumblr refuses to solve this problem

I'm not sure that thinness ever went away as the beauty ideal... I think it was always an accepted form of beauty alongside the trendy Instagram aesthetic. Maybe it's because I'm 25, and my friends and I grew up with the tumblr aesthetic, but it seems that almost everyone around me idolizes thinness. Kim K may have popularized the insta body online, but I don't see that reflected in real life where I live.

Growing up in the 2000s and remembering how much this all affected me makes me scared for the kids and preteens of right now, not for myself. I'm an adult now, I'll be fine, but this stuff really affects kids/preteens no matter how much you try to tell them it's just a trend. Telling a 12 year old "it will go out of style in 10 years!!" feels like an eternity to them because it's basically their whole life, and seems like it will never go away. The body image issues followed me all the way through college even though the trends had changed by then, so it makes me really concerned for the super young people now. Teens are still affected but at least they're old enough to remember the previous trends and to have witnessed the change happen
