About Thimphu , Bhutan : Thimphu is the largest city in Bhutan and the capital of the country. Dzongkhag is the name of the valley surrounding this city in the west-central Thimphu district. Thimphu has been the capital of the country since 1961. As of 2005, the population of the district was 98,767, while the population of the city was 79,185. Big Buddha statue and Simply Bhutan are the highlights in Thimphu.
