Thieves pull off state's largest copper heist

It's being called the biggest copper theft in the state's history. Thieves made off with thousands of feet of copper wiring from right under the state Department of Transportation's nose.

    Yeah if they took it from a powered source, it would have been noticed right away. Probably someone who knew where they were and what they did. Probably someone who installed them in the first place.

    waterside obviously the copper one, but if you cut some wires out they're going to make certain things go dark which would be noticed immediately. If you know which lights can go out and you know which wire's to cut then you can get a lot more done before things are discovered

    Joe Mama I was wondering about the same thing. I would let the stripped wire stay outside or cover it with dirt for a while to make it look much older. Or with some extra work and money, it can be melted down into bars.

    Do you not understand how much wire costs? Wire is worth far less at a scrap yard compared to wire you buy. Go ahead and look up 5 or 10 miles of MCM wire, or even smaller wire but I'm guessing the copper was larger. Than imagine working with wire like that and under a bridge but this also could be DOT replacing the wire but if it isn't this is several weeks if not a month. That is a massive amount of work, a lot harder than just cutting it down.

    The company I work for does underground, stands street lighting and does whole intersections... 6 miles of wire is a few thousand depending on the gauge (Unless they're running some 3M coated shit which would make no sense, needless the cost would be small). They said it was for lighting and power for inspections. I'd assume it's probably 8 AWG, maybe 6 AWG depending what city and spec they're running. Labor too pull 6 miles of wire, if you can't finish that in 1 day it's because you're overpaid and work for the city. If someone bid this job for more then 6 figures and they took the offer then sign me up.

  • @vertsabre

    @vertsabre

    I mean, they said it COULD be in the millions which means they probably had bids in the range of 700k to 1.2 million. Electricians aren't cheap either.

    Oh I would extremely doubt it would cost any more than a couple thousand, but the government will pay people 100x as much money for any task/items. I knew a businesses owner who was asked by the Gov, for some red wood stakes for the military. They wanted it made an extremely specific and Very inefficient/wasteful way (Because they refuse to accept the wood made by modern day techniques, and want it made the way it was 100 years ago, as the Gov refuses to change/adapt) and they were willing to pay 25-50x as much for the wood. What should of been an easy 4,000-5,000 dollar order turned up in a 40-60k order.

    No, but I work in the private sector where inspections are done on various equipment that include turbines, boilers, digesters and clarifiers. Most of these locations are not able to be wired at any cost. My point is, portable lighting, hand held or stationary is MANY times cheaper and likely better then installed lighting. Classic government spending OUR money on things that don't make a difference other than to please others in government.

    Donnie Byrd Any scrapyards around my area wouldn't accept melted copper or re-formed. I just took almost 500 pounds of copper pipe, fittings and other copper stuff. I went thru alot just to get the cash for it. I work in the hvac trade and they called my employer to make sure I didnt steal it. Lol

    Just to inform, after the copper is stripped and cut into manageable pieces there is zero way to track its origin. So you blaming the salvage yard for a simple case of stolen basic materials is rather silly.
