Bruce Hutchinson Ryky is a family man trying to share his passion with the world . Not asking for a dollar uploads in hopes that he’ll get views and grow as a channel. The tools he had stolen show that he cares the level of content that he creates is the very best he can . I hope the police find the thieves so the don’t do it again . Bruce hope this helps you understand that people care .

A similiar thing happened to me a few years ago. The security person that I talked to told me to be careful because the thieves will return in about 30 days figuring that you will replace you gear with brand new gear. Indeed, they did - however, we changed up our security and moved some of our gear locations so we did not suffer a second loss. Believe me, I know EXACTLY how you feel!

Good advice. thieves always return when they get a good score. My house was broken into years back. And when he returned a few nights later, I was waiting in the dark. It was a very bad night for him haha

Sorry for your loss. BTW . Your establishment was burglarized, not robbed. Chances are that your building’s security guard, in one way or another, participated in the crime. Hopefully CSI dusted for fingerprints.

Damn. Why can t people respect and allow others people position. I know. I sound naïeve. Bit it s the kind I want to hang on to. Got burglars around 3 times. You get used to it. Luckily my life valuables are not defined on items that can be monetized. Good luck rebuilding. And go get some insurance and new locks. And taken the lenzez and cams home I guess. It s one backpack. I think he already has a good idea who did this. It seems like a very planned theft.

This was probably an inside job. More burglaries tend to be by someone who knows you.

The fact that they just left that _cheap_ lens is very weird. They either know about cameras, checked internet prices at the moment or directly know his gear. They also went straight for the katanas but not for the knives since the katanas are much more profit for the hassle that it is them being tracked compared to the knives. Their decisions seem quite interesting indeed.

PLEASE BE VERY CAREFUL! WHEN THIEVES GET A BIG "PAYDAY"... THEY USUALLY COME BACK!!! This happened at my business partner's business, and one of his employees was held at gunpoint!!! Try to figure out how they got in, install security lights or cameras, install security doors ECT... Just as chefs hang out with other chefs and talk, thieves hang out with other thieves! Really sorry this happened to you bro.

Ryky, you taught me how to sharpen knives, and thanks to you I can repair and re-profile damaged knives too with my atoma 140. Cant believe this happened to someone who's just trying to help other people and share his passion. Hope good things come your way dude.

Holy....aww man I'm really sorry to hear this happened to you :( Clearly someone knew and targeted you, not an opportunistic crime. 99% sure it's someone you know. I know it sucks and you don't want to release anything until everything's been replaced, but if you want, please know the production quality is really secondary to me. I wouldn't mind seeing you sharpen knives on a GoPro or smartphone video. So this doesn't need to kneecap your video schedule (again, only if you want to upload videos before replacement gear arrives). Best of luck to you getting back up and running (and hopefully they catch the perps). We'll be here for you when you're ready.

Kenneth Hwang i agree this is a premeditated heist. There is no way they would go through so much security so easily without prior planning. Plus why did they target you in particular. Basically its likely they watched some of your videos and found out where your studio was.

Seems a bit like an inside job to know to hit up both offices grab specific things but leave others.

Ryky, I am so sorry that this happened to you. I've had this happen to me a few times, (once they stole all of my tools while I was at my brother's funeral!) and although the financial cost is a bummer, I remember feeling violated. Don't take it too personally, because it probably wasn't personal to the thieves. Take good care of yourself, and if it's any consolation, the video shot on your phone was quite good quality :)

Liking the video feels kinda wrong but know that I did it because of your attitude about the whole situation; the health of your body and mind which allows you to remain so calm and forward-focused is amazing! You've always seemed incredibly genuine and sincere and I wish you nothing but the best, man! I'm physicsally disabled at 32 years old because of an incredibly rare endocrine disorder and your positivity, kindness, and serenity had been a huge inspiration to me over the last few years. You are the reason I just bought my first wetstone about a week ago; a Sharp Pebble 400/1000 stone. I've already made great progress and that's in large part because of you! God that's awful Ryky. I found your channel just some weeks ago when I was looking for my first Japanese knife. You have so many in depth videos and genuinely look passionate about what you do. That is refreshing. Seeing how you are handling all of this gives me peace, it's clear this will be water under the bridge soon. All in all, I am really happy that you and your folks are okay, and I am sure (after reading tons of comments like mine) that we will stick around and keep up with you. What general area are you in? Viewers can diligently scour craiglist, ebay and perhaps even local pawn shops for the missing gear. This will be a score they try to move fast. Has there been any work or service done in the building recently? Start there.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I have been there and done that. You're still in the early stages of this, but it leaves an emotional scar that will never be gone. You are definitely more gracious then I would have been. Take care I wish you the best.

It honestly breaks my heart to watch you go through something like this. I've had my share of belongings that were stolen from me multiple times. Many ranging from very expensive to very odd ( ie. So sorry to hear this :( I’ve had a couple of experiences like this myself and it’s just the worst feeling. I really hope you are able to find a way forward. Absolutely yes to using your phone for a while! The camera quality of the videos are only a small part of what we watch your channel for.

This saddens me to no end given that you have so much on your plate 😥. Don’t ever loose your strength, energy, and enthusiasm. You are a role model and have helped many of us immensely; especially during this freaky pandemic/fire/protester/extreme climate year. I hope that the blues in your area are helpful and effective, that you documented all of your serial #s, that you’re insured, and that the love of your family/friends give you comfort during this upsetting event. Plow through this as I know that you can. I’ve only recently discovered your channel, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed catching up on your older videos. I’ve been addicted to watching all of your thoughtful and entertaining presentations. You have a great presence and style for the on-camera stuff as well as talent for polishing the final product for KZread viewers. I should know, I did educational video production for a living before retiring. This is a bad pothole for everyone, but it’ll pass. My apartment was broken into a few years back and had lots of things stolen. I really feel for you. I'm thankful it was an office and not your home. It took at least a year to feel "normal" again. Adding a simple wireless security system might be worth looking into. I use Simplisafe now myself for my workshop for the peace of mind. I added one of their WIFI cameras as well which uploads everything to the cloud and they can detect and act as a motion detector as well

This really sucks, but stick with your calm approach and just be thorough on your inventory and then go to police and then insurance in that order. Lenses will be easier to track due to serial numbers. Plus, standing invite if you're ever in Northeast Ohio to come over and sharpen at our house. We'll make you and your family some yummy food. 👍

I can't stand thieves.. you handled that exceptionally well ryky. Minor setback for a major comeback!

I feel so bad for you. I hope you continue with your positivity, for I believe it helps during such a devastating blow. All the best to you. I came in to ask a question, and feel it’s a bit out of place now. In case you want content for a Q&A video, here it goes. I’m new to the channel and new to good cooking knives. I notice a recurring theme on your favorite knives of the year videos. Yaxell knives, especially the Enso HD and SG2 series, as well as the Dragon. I got a Enso HD Gyuto based on your past recommendations and I couldn’t be happier. I wonder, however, what is it about these Yaxell knives that make like them so much, which in turn lead you to recommend them so often? I also got a Shun Classic Utility knife and a Tojiro paring knife. The Shun has a slightly better edge out of the box (very marginally), but I was able to make the Enso HD match the Shun edge following your sharpening tutorial videos with a King Deluxe 1000 and King splash n go 6000. Took me way longer than it would take someone more experienced, I made it worse before I made it better, and I got some scratches on the side of the knife, but that’s all part of the learning process. I’m just left wondering what is it about them that make them such amazing knives. My only regret is maybe not going up one tier with the SG2, which leads me to my next question. VG10 vs SG2, is there a performance or durability difference? Anyways, I’m not expecting this to be answered anytime soon, but left it here just in case it helps bring you a sense of normalcy and content for a next video. The important thing now is your financial and emotional recovery from this. All the best and please stay positive and don’t let this event poison you.

So sorry, I had a theft issue last month TWICE and its just awful, take the measures to feel more protected but the worst is the energy it takes from you having to constantly think about. Be safe and my best to you.

Its easy to say "this are only things", because there is the feeling that a stranger invaded your personal space, went through your stuff and took what he liked. We had something like you experienced here every year as long as we had the gravel plant. And they often destroyed lots of stuff because they couldn't find anything of worth. You are blessed that those thugs "only" broke into your office on their search for gold bars you store in your Office. The thing is, that they stole equipment that is worth 25.000 USD, and they are lucky if they get 2.000 USD when they sell it. I hope that everybody who is able, who can afford it, is helping you via Gofundme so that you are able to get new equipment. Or that those thugs get cought and you get your stuff back. I didn't expect to see this either. Despite the welcoming faces in the building, from what you've described, filming from a discreet location sounds best. minor setback. the journey to rebuild is going to be awesome

As someone that’s into lock sports, I went down that rabbit hole and got extremely paranoid. After practicing for a few months, I’m confident in my skills to open most residential door locks. I don’t know how they broke in but don’t rely on regular door locks! They’re comically easy to pick open. And most digital locks have a physical key override. Also, invest in at least Nest or Ring with alerts. Insure your expensive gear. Register camera gear on Lenstag. Personally, I invested in an $3K AMSEC safe and have it bolted down to store all my valuables and digital backups. I’m confident that the safe would hold up to a typical break in. Good luck with your recovery. Hope fortune turns around for you.

Love your mindset dude. Feel really bad for you, this shit sucks really bad. I had motorcycles stolen a few years back and it really shook me up. I guess a saving grace may be that you're one of very few Komodo owners. Those cameras are exceptionally rare and should be very hard to sell on so there's a possibility of repatriation. Get on the forums and make everyone aware they've been stolen and get the serial numbers out there. Again, love your outlook and your mindset, don't let these assholes and their actions get you down. Oh and get CCTV 👍
