I am so grateful for this man. I met him personally some years prior to his stroke. He taught me the seed of unconditional love. Literally. I started listening to self help audios years prior when feeling so alone in deep suffering. He was the light amongst the dark walls I faced often times in life so when I finally met him you can imagine how excited I was to meet him. At plum village they had this 7 day (or so) ceremony and on the last day they had all of us get together for photos. They had me sit just infront of him. I couldn't believe I was so close. I had a regular camera. And the battery went red. My mom used to always take the batteres out and put it back in to get a little extra juice from the battery. So while everyone peacefully posed for a picture I was doing all I can to take the batteries out and put them back in while probably pouting out loud (because I so badly wanted a picture of my favorite person). I finally got the green light. I turned around and I immediately took a picture of him (he was just a few feet away), while realizing the flash went straight to his face. All of a sudden I was a bit embarrassed from invading his space. I didn't feel him looking at me in any judgmental way. He didn't look annoyed. He didn't appeared bothered by me. Nor did he look at me with disgust. He instead looked at me in the most fatherly, nurturing, kind, loving, accepting way. He smiled at me warmly from a place of such gentleness and compassion. He kissed his hand and then placed his hand slowly and lovingly to my forehead and just looked at me with pure kindness for the longest while. Time stopped. It was just love that flowed. I met an angel that day. He reminds us to find the angel within. Throughout. Beyond. All things. If it's hard to look at another with that kind of love, maybe it's best to start within. We are all going thru some much. Many of us have felt betrayed, hurt, violated, wronged, controlled, disrespected, unloved... as well as the guilt from thecerong we might have done to others (and to ourselves).. we all carry our own cages and our own strife. We also carry the light. This world carries within it heart and the lack of heart. The light and the darkness.. Within the trenches of darkness we also (when ready to) can find the light. Rest in peace Angel. You help me transform it all. Eventually. Oddly so, when we can sit within our biggest discomforts the colorful rainbow eventually emerges. One moment at a time.

This teaching confuses. Thay says that if there is no suffering then no compassion arises. How was Shakyamuni Buddha then able to realize the ultimate cessation of suffering in Samsara and become a non-returner? Did he eliminate his compassion too?

Perhaps if we understand 'ultimate' not in a static but in the sense of a continuous process, you can understand that the 'suffering to understanding to compassion to happiness path' is something that we do (we practice) all the time for every new, different situation. Not just a once-off practice. I also find it useful not to mix up the Teacher and the Teachings together. So often, so many stories have been made up of the Teachers' life (Buddha, Jesus etc) over so many generations that we could have any idea of their truth. But in the practices, we can see for ourselves if they truly work or not...teehee, I sure hope what I've said here hasn't confused things further! Better to practice than to talk:)

Suffering was overcome by the Buddha because he knew how to suffer less. For example, Shakiamani Buddha's foot was hurt when a boulder rolled into it at Vulture's Peak. He touched his foot to heal it, and one can surmise he would have felt compassion for the one who on purpose attacked him, not anger.

I understand it like this: if you don't even know what suffering is, you can't be compassionate. So, when you become a compassionate human being after you have suffered, compassion is "consequence" that lasts forever, even when suffering disappears.

He has some insight but totally disagree with his suffering theory . Yes we can choose to be happy and make life changes , but he also contradicts the fact that people can have mental illness and this can be the cause of their suffering . Yes compassion is from understanding , but no one can control the suffering just by been compassionate . Redicoulus to say without suffering there is no happiness

Yes I believe we can gain understanding, and wisdom from dealing with suffering but I feel like I don’t need to have felt hunger to appreciate a good meal. I don’t need abuse to to know when I’m being treated well. And definitely can I feel happy without suffering first.

So we need to make balance between these Energy that's why we practice meditation to heal and for proper conditioning of mind so it can work with its fullest yes it's also possible but without meditation then you have to make more effortts like in materialistic worlds.

Why do you see suffering as separate from life as supreme budhha told that the nature of joy and sorrow is impermanence they can't be stopped until one reaches Nirvana(enlightment) but by observing them from a distance and understanding them deeply they can be resolved and they can be made intergal part of one's life just like we very unintentionally manage to adjust season changes. Happiness and sorrow are incomplete without each other and they have no importance. I guess you have understood my point.
