The shifters won’t become titans underground. For fear of being crushed. They mention that numerous times. He transformed underground inside of that super strong crystal cave. Breaking his back and limiting the amount of room his limbs could extend. It’s a possibility or may have been a factor.

Titans are made by intellgent design as in someone, ymir in this case, actively designs them with an idea in mind instead of them just being fully random. She seems to take into account a persons attributes when she makes them (appearences, personality and desires) ,e.g - the talking titan retaining religiosity - she made zekes titan a huge ape because it was his favorite toy - makes titans look like their human form BUT She dosn't seem to take into account any context as to why they're being created or put any deep thought into the design process and just makes them almost uncarringly like an unmotivated employee blindly following guidlines (probs due to her slave status). She just makes twisted carricatures of whatever person she turns (a symbol of mans monstrocity and constant need to consume , maybe ymir is stating her opinion of humanity through her titans or maybe just writer) Seems the only way you can actively influence ymirs decision is either with the founding titan or using different titan serums. But since she takes into account the person and the serum. I think like kenny said, rod reiss was ignorant and didnt know the strongest serum meant collosal titan AND I think ymir saw rod reiss crawling after he had his back busted and impulsively just made him a crawling titan.

Maybe, a theory I like better is its because Historia damaged his spine when she flipped him It is spinal fluid that transforms them, so messing up your spine probably makes you abnormal.

No, it was simply that Reiss was idiot and didn't understand the science of how to make a proper titan serum. He made the extract of the colossus titan serum too strong. It's shown in the manga that they can refine the powers of other titans. That's why Annie's female titan has a hardening ability. It's because they also injected her with the armor titan ability.

Well I think Rod transformation messed up and stopped midway because the cave was small so it couldn’t grow properly

When we see partial or deformed titans it seems to be because they didn't have enough time for a full transformation (Spoon Erin or Reiner's finger dome) or they didn't really have a handle on their powers but had a decently clear purpose in mins (Erin protecting his buds in the titan hand/ribs) I think he transformed like that because of a lack of clear purpose (he didn't want to titanize so I imagine that tampered with how clear his intent was) lack of time with the titan power and the emotional crisis he found himself in after his kid broke his spine 😂

To think that even though he just licked a tiny bit of the serum and he got so big, what would have happened if he got the entire thing?

I think it's down to how it was administered. He had organs because the sirim passed through his digestive organs first before the rest of his body making them the priority in the transformation. Everyone else had normal transformations because the serum entered through their muscles and arteries.

Wonder if it hurts him to be that titan

Nah it's mindless, but since ymir remembered her 60 titan tears as some weird uneasy dream, rod's last hours must have been literal hellish torture for the rest of his councioness

I think it also has to do with the state of the persons body before they transform. Fair warning, there will be major spoilers for later this season: Think back to the Return To Shinganshina Arc. Right before Armin transformed, his body was burned and he was barely able to breathe. His mindless titan seemed pretty normal, except for it's overall structure. It was thin and you couldn't even see it's eyes. Maybe that had to do with it? I don't know. Just something I thought about.

I was just scrolling down to the comments to mention this myself. Also notice the way Armin's mindless Titan seemed to have its lips permanently pulled back dramatically, revealing his teeth. Before becoming a Titan, the severe burns he'd suffered had caused his lips to pull back and reveal his teeth in a similar way. Now compare that to his Colossal Titan form. From his skeletal Colossal appearance it can be argued that most of the near-skeletal aspects of his mindless Titan were just part of how Armin's body naturally handles generating a Titan; however, his Colossal Titan still has normal lips. This despite the rest of Armin's skeletal look and the fact that Bert's more muscular Colossal Titan didn't have any lips. Taking these facts together, it strongly points to that feature of his mindless Titan being a direct result of his injuries, and thus a person's physical state having at least some influence on the exact form of their mindless Titan.

Eren's mindless Titan simply doesn't have lips, going straight from skin and flesh into teeth, and has a unique terraced jaw. This was carried over into his version of the Attack Titan as well, although neither Grisha nor Kruger had that feature. Thus we can assume this is just a natural part of his Titan form. The point I was trying to make with Armin's mindless Titan is that the feature in question does not carry over to his Colossal Titan, despite the Colossal being the one type of Titan that we could expect to not have lips since it doesn't have skin either (and Armin's Colossal Titan's back teeth are still exposed since he has has no cheeks, making the fact he has lips even more strange). This is a really weird inconsistency, and given the state of Armin's body when he became a Titan, it seems unlikely this would be a coincidence.

A fit titan needs to have a young age and strong mentality, that can be proved by eren and Anne, slightly older titan have larger gut such as bertholt and armored titan. And when a person reached middle age to old, their gut becomes even larger, such as grisha,rod Reiss or even connie's mother So rod Reiss age, weak cowardly mentality,trying to consume colossal titan serum is a pretty messed up titan

Nice summary there but I disagree with the gut stuff. I hope you are a manga reader. Eren Krueger(When he was as old as Grisha was before his death) had an Attack Titan form similar to Eren's. Not having a functioning gut is a trait of all Titans. And a huge gut might just be because of certain deformities or the features of the serum itself.

Rod’s Titan, was gonna be originally called “Pure titan”, but they call it turkey titan because the color of raw turkey.

pretty sure it's just an abnormal version of the wall titan. not to mention rod had his spine broken in half before consuming the spinal fluid, so that probably had an effect on his transformation too. edit: this video brought all this up and more theories and reasons. good video.

I like the idea that final thoughts influence a mindless Titan's actions. Sort of a callback to Kenny's theory about everyone being obsessed/drunk on something. Some people are like mindless Titans in that they only have one goal and will do anything they desperately have to in order to achieve it. Now, consider the state of Eldians who are turned into mindless Titans by Marley. From what I can tell, only Eldian Restorationists and Ymir Worshippers are send to Paradise Island. Others who break the rules, like Grisha's sister, are merely killed. I'd wager that their final thoughts before being turned into mindless Titans is trying to survive and kill the Marleyans. Hence, this is why almost every single mindless Titan tries to endlessly eat humans. They either think they are eating Marleyans, or they are desperately looking for a Titan shifter so they can return to normal. I'm betting on the former. Exceptions include Dina Fritz, who is of royal blood, but also her final thoughts were of finding her husband. And she...sort of did that. She found his home, maybe by scent or some weird connection she sensed. Had Dina been able to subconsciously access the Path of all Eldians, she would've gone into the forests looking for Grisha. Other exceptions include Ymir (Historia's bae) whose final thoughts were likely wishing she could disappear or die or run away. That's why her titan slept on the ground for so long she was covered in Earth. And that's why Reiner was so surprised that a Titan was nearby despite them not being near the walls. Mindless Titans can sense large human populations, that's why they go toward there. But Ymir didn't care, she just wanted to die. As for why she ate Marcel, either she knew he was a Shifter (which I doubt), or her anger towards Marley pushed her to eat humans. Another exception is the Ymir follower who thought Elise was Ymir. He was a devoted follower and his final thoughts were likely to find Ymir as he believed she was his savior. Eventually however, his Titan instincts took over and he ate Elise. Again, I think this stems from his hatred for Marley. The last one is Connie's mother, who was worrying about her son right before Zeke roared and she transformed.

I love rewatching old theory videos now that I know the entire story and all the details, its so fun

well technically when you inject the serum you're sending it to one precise point. however rod licking it meant he INGESTED it meaning it went throughout his WHOLE body, which probably explains why he became so big. the container also says "the strongest titan", against "normal titan" which eren got injected with, soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo definitely applies.

I think it has to do with the back problem. Connie's mom was old, so she transformed into a decrpid version of a titan. The crawling one probably had a broken back too when it got transformed. Makes sense that rods is deformed after a back injury too.
