Years ago, I was talking to a stranger at a dinner party and told him that I was going to write a book. Generally, that remark gets oooo's and ahhhhhh's from people. But this guy just said "And how long have you been planning to write this book?" I told him I'd been collecting information and ideas for the last 20 years, and he said "Forget it. You're obviously not going to write it." This shook me up enough to tickle my "I'll-show-you bone". I sent this man my first 4 published books. The next three I didn't bother. If he hadn't rattled my chain, I would probably still be just talking about it.😂😂

I used to be exactly the same, in fact I would spend ages making notes either about the idea or to try and think one up, and not actually do the work because I was too busy fine-tuning the ideas, or researching them. Once I started showing up at my desk every day (even if I was in a really flat mood and only felt capable of doing a quick scribble) I started to detach from that mindset gradually. I think it might be connected to perfectionism, as I just started doing a new thing of painting but allowing myself to do bad work, in fact encouraging myself to do bad work, and finally I feel like I'm getting some traction, and I can paint freely and enjoy it. Ideas are coming from the work I've done rather than from my thinking, which always resulted in disappointment as I would spend hours trying to have the perfect idea only to find when I started the project, it didn't work. So I think this video is bang on and I wish you lots of luck with trying out just showing up and doing something, it really works!

So true. I also believe the “muse” or “energy” or whatever you call it will find who’s working. There’s a crazy phenomenon on this (forget what it’s called) but there’s an example of two authors one of which didn’t act on an idea for a book, and their good friend and colleague who they connected with one a year or so, knowing nothing about the book idea, started writing that very book. Thank you for this! I have been suffering from GAS (gear aquisition syndrome) for most of my life and I know how much time I can waste thinking that what I have to work with is not enough. Instead of doing my work (writing) I would just spend hours just browsing the web looking at the newest laptop or tablet or fountain pen that I KNEW would make my writing better. But in the end I would just get the shiny products, be full of dopamine for a month then plummet down to my baseline. I now just force myself to just write pen and paper and use my laptop to transfer to digital. Both my output and quality improved significantly ❤

I agree about not needing the fancy materials. Many years ago I did a drawing for a friend of my mum. He was an Italian man who had come to the UK before the war. I was a bit embarrassed about the quality of the paper I had drawn on (we never had money so it was very rough paper). He told me, during the war he and his dad and brother were taken into an internment camp (because they were italian in the UK) and they used to draw on old newspapers. He said its not the materials, its what you do with them that makes them art.

I used to have this same attitude until I started timing myself and realized how powerful 5-10 minutes really could be. AND how much those minutes add up when they begin to compound. It’s why I stand firm in, “create something every day”. Doesn’t have to be a masterpiece, doesn’t have to be world changing, doesn’t even have to be finished. But greasing that creative groove is powerful. As a teacher, you give a lot. Try giving to yourself first. Maybe it’s 5 min sketch during your morning coffee. I’m happy to have helped, Michael! The hardest part is starting (anything). Once you get going it’s so much easier to keep that inertia and continue pace. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but consistency (in anything) never is. Overtime that consistency compounds, and that’s where the magic happens. Plus, sometimes 5minutes = 3 hours! Happy creating!
For me, showing up every day is about building a relationship with my inner artist, others may call this the muse or the diamon. We are in service to this source of creativity & imagination and we have to make sacrifices of our time & energy in dedication to this deity. If we commit to this relationship, hold a space to reach out, listen & trust it will lead us to who we actually are, what our art is about, to our authentic voice and style. Your ego, your mind, what you think isn’t your art, it is something deeper & showing up, being patient & developing a daily practice is the only way to have something that truly expresses your soul. And that is always more satisfying.

Marketing is often about relatability and art is about emotional resonance too on the side of the consumer. Maybe you've put yourself in the wrong places and before people if you weren't received in a positive way? What are your books about? Who are they really for? Who can resonate with the stories? What can they learn from it? Who can benefit from what you have to give and how? These are important questions to ask, so you can focus on your particular niche instead of relying on some marketing "specialist" to bring in customers. Many of those "specialists or "art managers" will just take your money without delivering any results they promise and then even blame you for the results and call your art crap. Neurotypicals don't relate well with neurodivergent peole and their struggles, there is usually a clash in communication when they're forced to work together. Keep that in mind. It's better to build things up from scratch when you are personally engaged in the process, because you know your message best and you care about it most and you have to care about the people who become your first supporters too. You have to learn how to serve them best without compromising on your values, you have to discover that middle ground because no one else with care about it more and it has to be personal. You have to learn how to take feedback and how to ignore nonconstructive comments. You can call in advisors and other specialists when you are at the stage where you know your core products and when you have enough discernment to reject incompatible "help". Best of luck to you! May you find the best path to express yourself and relate to others! ;) PS: I believe the video was about creating art and expressing yourself, not as much about selling it - that's a different problem. Developing your skill vs monetizing it. You just admitted that you have everything you need to create your art, because you've already created it. Now you have to figure out who can receive it - that's the next level of the journey.
Thank you for this lovely message 💕💕 sharing it to my friends. Everyone needs to hear this.

Same goes for dating. I think a lot of people don’t see that as a creative activity. When I was in that world, someone said, “Focus on the skill (development), not the outcome,” which is exactly what you’re saying here. Ultimately, we can’t really control everything about our artistic lives but we can usually decide to put in the work. When you do that, everything else seems like an excuse to procrastinate or quit.

Exactly! It’s all about sitting down and doing the work (regardless what arena)
I find myself in need of this reminder. I often find excuses to avoid creating art, whether it's doubting my abilities compared to others on social media or convincing myself that I need certain materials before I can start a project. However, I realize now that these are merely distractions. You're correct; everything I need to excel is already within me. It's up to me to take that first step. Additionally, I appreciate the analogy that five minutes of focused effort can yield as much as three hours of distracted work.

I’ve been exactly where you are.. to the point it was crippling for me creatively. You have it all within you. Go easy, but try 5 minutes a day. See how that goes!
Thank you for this. I try to only like video's with rewatch value and this is one of them.

Thank you so much for your wise words and practical strategies! This applies to so many aspects of life. I shared it with my teenage daughters as well. I'll be creating today and everyday moving forward. Peace & Blessings!!!

You’re too kind. The power of compounding is where the magic happens. A little each day doesn’t seem like much until you stack a year or 3 of those together. Happy creating!
Thankyou Ginny, I’m a multi faceted artist ranging from poetry to graffiti and I couldn’t agree more with this opinion, small consistent efforts over time build the strongest foundations and one day you’ll be proud of what you’ve built, pushing yourself overly hard to meet really ambitious goals can help but also hinder the overall process, the way you framed this is great, love 😎✌🏽

@@andabien3 91,25 hours equals 91 hours and 15 minutes. I changed that now because I realized that I used a comma instead of a decimal point. In Germany we have decimal commas, hence the confusion

Hahah there’s honestly nothing I love more than perusing an art store for supplies. It’s a thing. Let’s not deny that that dopamine hit is REAL. 😅
I've had 4 or 5 different studios over the years. Skylights are paramount. Sure anyone can make art with a head lamp and good space and best of supplies. AIn't nothing without a good naturally lit place and higher than 7 foot ceillings. (Maybe some day for me.)

Agreed! One of the best things I did was start a drawing a habit every morning before anything else got started. Within about six months, I learned Procreate, honed my style, and had about 180 designs to put in my store. Getting back into it now! Thank you for sharing! -Kali

Hi again. Holy smokes you’ve been busy! I love to hear this. It’s so cliche, but little tiny actions each day really do compound overtime and generate big results. Nothing over night, but if you stack enough of those little wins and actions together, it’s kind of wild where you can end up. Congrats on your creative productivity!
Thank You!

I've definitely spent the last few years having fallen into the trap of focussing too much on the end product. It's fine to do that when it's something like a comic I'd like to publish or if it's a commission, the product is part of that process. But for the casual stuff like doodling in sketchbooks or just experimenting with different mediums or styles, I'm getting better at focussing more on enjoying what I'm doing rather than focussing only on what I'm creating. I find it far more gratifying to do a terrible 5-minute doodle over doing nothing at all :)

Not everything has to be “perfect” or even complete
Two years into my creative process. Perfectionism was the first roadblock. Therapist suggested I just start with what I have on hand. Learned I needed internal art in journals for personal development and that I need to shift between external art for others. Some of it is not meant to be seen, no performing, raw intuitive expression. Giving out little mini art watercolor squares with impactful sayings is so rewarding. I give them away random places like drive thru, drs office assistants. People are usually shocked! 😮 😊

100% agree. Years ago when I started setting creating goals (3 peices a day) it escalated into 5 to 10 a day. I got obsessed. Was that work good? Not at all! But I've been consistent ever since and focus more on quality most days. But still to this day I sometimes have nothing to give. So I sit down and just copy something for the ritual. The ritual of creating and not focusing on perfection is as fun as those great pieces you are proud of. Create and create some more.
