    I think as long as the children are well behaved it is a fine idea. I was also under the impression that these old Victorian cemeteries were built to be used like public parks. The dead don't care what goes on there its only for the living.

    While I love the idea of kids involved in genealogy etc., The gravestones are not safe. There were a lot of broken and fallen ones. Unlevel ground too. I've heard of 2 deaths in the Chicago, Illinois (US) area, people getting killed by falling stones. Glad you are back!

    I used to play in the cemetery when I was little. We used to play hide and seek, "what's the time Mr wolf?", tag, I spy, etc. We used to pick some wildflowers (like dandelions, daisies, blossoms off low hanging branches and flowers from hawthorns etc) and place them on graves that didn't get visitors so they didn't feel left out. Take paper and crayons or graphite to do rubbings on the stones. Mostly if it had pretty engraved patterns. It was always rather peaceful. At the end of the day, as long as the kids aren't climbing on things or littering etc, I see no issue in playing in them. They're just slabs of stone at the end of the day. The person they're a marker for are long gone, especially in the older cemeteries that don't even have visitors anymore. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    If one were of the belief that the dead remain with us, then who knows, maybe they enjoy having children playing and leaving them innocent offerings.

    I definitely don’t think a cemetery is a place for an egg hunt, for one thing some of these older headstones are very unsteady and could be dangerous, and I feel it’s very disrespectful to the dead and their families. Thanks for the wonderful videos ❤

    I just see a little 4 year old boy running smack into a headstone. No, not a good choice for an Easter egg hunt, despite the fact you really aren't supposed to have a whole bunch of fun in a graveyard. A bunch of kids leaving flowers peacefully at the graves to make the spirits happy to be remembered.

    It’s not safe to have a bunch of kids there at once. They can damage headstones and get hurt. Plus it’s bloody creepy to have kids playing a few feet above rotting bodies.I say this as I grew up behind a cemetery and ode my bicycle in one and played on the grounds, however this stones were flat to the ground. These are upright.

    During the Victorian Era there were several cemeteries built here in the US and else wear with the idea that they were also to serve as recreational spaces/parks where people could come on the weekends and have a picnic and what not. It's a macabre idea to us now, but not to the Victorians. However, a cemetery is not quite the same as a church yard. Church yards have always been more solemn places. I have no issue with the idea but I can understand the community not being behind it if it's still an actively or recently actively used church yard.

    never have understood people getting upset about a kid being in a cemetery. so they walk on a grave. it's not going to hurt the person that has passed. kids won't learn to NOT hang on the grave markers if someone doesn't teach them. used to be, the yards were treated as parks. people went and had PICNICS there. why not an Easter Egg hunt?

  • @KatieReadsKoziesAndMore
    @KatieReadsKoziesAndMoreАй бұрын

    Depending on the age of the grave markers and the upkeep of every single grave. Seriously, a kid climbing on a heavy marker that isn’t well seated could cause damage to the stone and cause bodily harm to the children. A graveyard with flat stones might be safer. But using gravestones as a playground is disrespectful. Additionally, some faiths put coins on headstones. It would be sad to learn that children decided to pickup the coins because they aren’t aware of such traditions.

    Cool video Dan such a beautiful place. I think I'd be ok with an easter egg hunt going on as long as it was run appropriately. Rookwood cemetery here in Sydney Australia holds a yearly art exhibition in the grounds and they seem to be able to pull it off in a respectful manner. Some of the 'art' sucks but it is a nice way to get people to experience the cemetery without having to go through loss or bereavement.

    I’m going to say this with much Respect for the cemetary/graveyard. I have an 8 yr old grandson & I did take him to Oconee Hill Cemetery here in Athens, Georgia. I think egg hunt not a good idea, most adults & therefore children don’t know how to Respect the graveyard & family members buried there. It’s up to parents learning and then teaching their children!! For example: watch where you step, a stone or marble or flowers, etc are accepted for Thinking about that person (maybe knowing or not)!! I think it is appropriate to take children while teaching traditions of respect but for kids at age of 7 to 8 yrs old!!

    Great to see you back Dan. It brought back some nice memories of my eldest son, now a man, when he was in the Cubs. Highlight of their local evening meets was when the doors of the church were opened, and out ran the young lads doing a lap of honour around the church and over the graves. No one got hurt and the vicar didn’t mind the boys having a bit of fun. I think Easter egg hunts would have been a brilliant idea then, and indeed now. Perhaps with crash helmets now for health and safety 😂

    The village where I grew up, had a church and I used to walk through the short cut on my way home.....it had a pathway from one end to the other , and I'd cut through to get home and at night was always very quiet 🤫 never any other kids playing. But I guess the graveyard 🪦 isn't a playground it's for to rest the dead. ( Store the dead). That IT horror mask is horrible, Most graveyards 🪦 have a very old grave section - that's forbidden it's usually red flagged ⛳ graves are about 150 years old or more.

    Years ago, families would pack a picnic, go to the cemetery and plant flowers, clean family stones. When TV hit homes, that went out the window. Kids used to play in cemeteries to deadly consequences. Stones sometimes are NOT secured and can fall on children and adults. I clean stones and make absolutely certain they are secure and straight. Any leaning stones, I keep away from them.

    The way some of those stones are leaning, I think it would have been a bad idea to have children running around hunting eggs. There are stories of people being killed in graveyards by toppling stones. If they want to introduce children to genealogy, maybe a chaperoned tour with age-appropriate information could be done -- they could have people dressed in period clothing to tell the stories of some of the people buried there and history of the area.

    I think a cemetery would be a great place for them if it were let’s say a learning to read activity ex. A circuit where they would have to find x,y and z. It would train them to read different scripts. More points if they had to read and write the numerous names of possible other people buried in the same plots. But that would be an activity for 7-8yrs old. The little ones could be made to search for elaborate tombstones for ex.
