(They Long To Be) Close To You by Isaac Hayes from Black Moses

Музыка

Black Moses, the original LP cover of which unfolded in the shape of a cross three feet wide and four feet tall, "is a wondrously crafted, intense evocation of the vagaries of love gone bad," in the words of Stax historian Rob Bowman. Hayes used songs popularized by such artists as the Jackson 5, the Carpenters, Toussaint McCall, Little Johnny Taylor, Jerry Butler, the Whispers, Ray Price, and Dionne Warwick, along with his own highly erotic "Good Love," to express the heartbreak he was feeling about the breakup of his own marriage. "Isaac's ability to take other people's material and make it so deeply personal," Bowman observed, "is nothing short of brilliant."

Isaac Hayes: this love is eternal. I bought this album when it was released and was so amazed at its clarity -- especially in "Close to You." The background singers -- Hot, Buttered and Soul? -- voices seemed to cascade from the heavens -- absolutely majestic -- especially in the closing vamp. Isaac Hayes was a genius.

Legit, this album and this song sounds very 1994 to 1999-ish, not late 60s and early 70s. I remember picking up "Hot Buttered Soul" and "Black Moses" in March 1999, and I thought they were recently-made albums, even the album covers look 90s.

I got this in March 1999, after getting into South Park & seeing Issac Hayes open up WrestlMania XV with the Rage Party. I legit thought Black Moses & Hot Buttered Soul were recently-release albums at the time. Crazy it came out almost 30 years before it. Same thing happened with my Uncle, who is really stuck in the late 60s and early 70s. He guessed HBS came out 1995, and BM in 1998.

I believe this is my most favorite of Sir Isaac's and there are many. Black Moses is aptly named because he was and will be a man among men. RIP and keep making the heavenly music up there in heaven.

I got this in March 1999 when I was 9 years old, after getting into South Park & seeing Issac Hayes open up WrestleMania XV with the Rage Party. I legit thought Black Moses & Hot Buttered Soul were recently-release albums at the time. Crazy it came out almost 30 years before it. Same thing happened with my Uncle, who is really stuck in the late 60s and early 70s era. He guessed HBS came out 1995, and BM in 1998. Ike was really ahead of his time. Edit: Just talked to my Uncle about this memory, hehe. He recalled thinking Ike was trying to create a unique "new old school" type of R&B during the mid/late 90s, and that updated music video for "Walk On By" (like me, not even knowing the audio track was from 1969) was why he guessed 1995. And then he assumed at that time Black Moses was perhaps HBS's sequel to capitalize during the South Park craze.

I don't know who the female background vocals were but they sound like angels. I had this album back in the 70s, but forgot how beautiful it was until recently. His rendition of this song (originally sung by the Carpenters is the best) because of the background vocals along with the music arrangement. Also, his rendition of "going in circles: by the Friends of Distinction is tops too. Sorry he had to leave this world at 64 yrs., but we all gotta go one day!
