Confused Reviews - Episode 79 - John Carpenter's They Live (1988)
hey Live is a 1988 American science fiction action horror film written and directed by John Carpenter, based on the 1963 short story "Eight O'Clock in the Morning" by Ray Nelson. Starring Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster, the film follows an unnamed drifter who discovers through special sunglasses that the ruling class are aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo via subliminal messages in mass media.
Having acquired the film rights to the Nelson-penned short story prior to the production of They Live, Carpenter used the story as the basis for the screenplay's structure, which he wrote under the pseudonym "Frank Armitage". Carpenter has stated that the themes of They Live stemmed from his dissatisfaction with the economic policies of then-U.S. President Ronald Reagan, as well as what Carpenter saw as increasing commercialization in both popular culture and politics.
They Live was a minor success upon release, debuting at #1 at the North American box office. It initially received negative reviews from critics, who lambasted its social commentary, writing, and acting; however, it later gained a cult following and experienced a significantly more favorable critical reception. It is now regarded by many as one of Carpenter's best films. The film has also entered the pop culture lexicon, notably having a lasting effect on street art (particularly that of Shepard Fairey).

my personal favorite carpenter movie well done confused reviews
It’s fascinating how many people of a certain political persuasion have decided that this movie is all about them and their cause when you consider that John Carpenter is a passionate leftist and They Live was made as his way of satirizing conservative economic and social policies.

Yeah I had a few tangents dispelling the terrible fan theories surrounding this movie's message that I cut out for the sole reason of it being so stupid it distracts from it's theme of standing against yuppie assholes.

Yeah like so many right wings think that the Simpsons was better in the 90 becauser there was no "politics", but... All Simpsons writers were leftists and so many jokes made fun of them, I Still remember that time i saw a comment on a They Live that basically said:"You should not wear masks because this movie from the 80 said it".
great video. Hope get more subs. Love your stuff :)

This is one of those movies that will hold up until we die because of the system
Being a huge JC fan I caught They Live opening weekend back in 1988. I thought it was a great movie but pretty exaggerated and over the top for the time. Flash forward to 2021 and the movie would seem a little on the nose if released today. Despite being a lifelong conservative voter I find the movie raises a lot of questions in the way brilliant science fictions movies should, unlike most of todays schlock. Kind of like Star Trek DS9 episode Homefront is a way too on the nose metaphor for 9/11, until you realize it came out in 1996.

Great review! George Carlin was 100% Spot-on! It's a big club-and we ain't invited!!!
I wanted to hold off til the end, but the jokes kept piling up and the blind "scurry" off around 13:00 just sent me 😭😭 I see why this one was on deck for so long. This is brilliant man. I've never sat down to actually watch this movie and knew I could trust you for the rundown. Gonna give it a watch and HOLY SHIT I HAVENT HEARD THAT "WHEN WORLD'S COLLIDE" SINCE THE FUCKING 2000s and thank goodness SOMEONE REMEMBERS IT. "YOU CAN RUN, BUT YOU CANNOT HIDE"!!! You're the best man. And...yes...H6 will ALWAYS swallow (not just suck).
