If you're ever wanting to be center of a piece, set your datum to center instead of a corner Or set from corner of a larger piece and cut out around it to be center

Nice. I’ve been loving my xcarve for almost two years. Took me three days to assemble. I used tape for 18 months. I just changed the way I do it. I installed an x y fence at 0,0, and then made cam clamps on my 3D printer (I’ll soon list them on Etsy). I have four different sizes and am able to secure my piece within a few seconds. It’s always square to 0,0, no tape needed, and no clamps. With the xtool, I always center my art in the software and mark center on my piece. Probably similar to what you’re used to. But on the cnc it’s different as you figured out. I always zero on the material, not the art. I also have learned the value in having evenly planed and milled material. Hard lesson learned. I also measure the thickness in mm not inches. And usually add .01mm to the thickness to allow the bit to just barely go through the material. However, if you do this, and you don’t use tape like me, tabs are a must. With your tape method you could get away with tape. Easel can be a real b***h sometimes.

I would have preferred blue prints to their web site instructions. Several times I had to back up and redo things. The y bar was backwards and I had to take it apart and do it again. Nothing in their crappy instructions indicated which way it went. Absolutely every piece of it required assembly. Getting it wired properly was also a major headache. The motor on the right side had to be wired backwards. Otherwise, it will twist rather than move forwards or backwards. Now that I got it together I am really liking it though.

Also, you can have a spoil board (MDF) That allows you to go beyond the bottom. I’ve used the tape method for a long time myself and have solid metal beds so spoil boards are a necessity. I mill aluminum using the CA method. 40”min / 1/4- 2flute endmill/ .0625 step over & step down. Centering is understanding software almost always unless your esteps are off.

Find the center of your board and use that as your start point t. In easel, highlight your project and right click. This will open up the screen to adjust depth of cut but if you look at the top select the orientation tab, you will see 5 dots. Select the center dot after that make your x y both 0. This will place the center of your project at your x y 0.. or home. Now when you start your cut, it will start from center and magic.. always on center

Nice! The issue with centering on the stock is coming from the software you're using to create the path, double check your document size or page size before exporting, for example, in VCarve Pro, you'll find a difference between the stock and the document size, where the design is at the center, both should be exactly the same.

Nice vid. I need one of these something bad. I'd cover the entire spoilboard like you did with another spoilboard(bunch of strips or something). Make the OG last longer. Clinkys!🥃

Having not worked with easel software before I cannot get into specifics or where to find the issue but I’m sure there’s an alignment section somewhere. You want to get 3 points let’s say the bottom left as you did in the video would require 2 points in the Y axis (top left, bottom left) and 1 in the X axis (bottom right). Doing the would help also help you if you didn’t set up 100% properly (example 90°) I’d hit home to double check you bottom left corner is aligned properly and maybe do a quick test run by leaving out the tools and turn the feed up to max if there isn’t a test option.

Great video thank you! I’m assembling mine. I’m but one of the yxis stepper motors sounds like it grinds and doesn’t roll smooth like the left side… do I have a defective piece?

  • @BuildDadBuild

Probably not. More than likely your gantry isn’t completely straight or you’ve got a roller tightened too much. But X-cave has excellent customer service so if you can’t figure it out, drop them a line.

@@BuildDadBuild thank you!! I’m giving them a call soon as they open. I disconnected the Y2 stepper motor cable and it runs smooth. That’s weird because I have I’ve nothing plugged in yet nor the controller unit lol it’s jus when I roll manually and that cable is connected it’s not smooth like the opposite side …I remove jus that cable and it is 🤔thank you again for all your great content.

The problem of centered, It's not really a problem. It was a calculation error. In easel when you are assigning the type of cut if it is on the line, inside or outside, in the shape option you have a box with 5 points, in this specific case it is very difficult to home the machine and choose your coordinate. That machine is very simple. I have the same machine. and it's very easy, you're going to have several errors in the tool changes. I recommend that you focus on work position if it is a job that does not occupy the maximum work area. Use the center point in the shape option when you are assigning the type of cut, with a pencil you mark the center of the material to work and that would be your coordinate or your home point. Another thing I recommend. It is that you have to be very delicate when you select the lines or vectors in easel. Because in many many times with the single action of selecting the line. Does it move. It is a problem that many times you do not see it on the screen. But you will see it when the work is done and when the final product is altered. I have personally called Inventables many times and explained to them to improve that part in the software. But it's been 5 years with my X-carve and the problem is still the same. Assigning cuts to vectors is a headache when you have many types of cuts using the same bits. And another problem when you change the tool is the movement and torque force that you generate by tightening and untightening the collet. If you are not aware, you can move the gantry and lose your point of origin or coordinates and you will see that in the final work it seems that you have moved the vector in easel. But in this case it is you who moves the position by changing the drill bit. Another suggestion is that you get used to using a material larger in size with an extra inch in total, so you have the option to correct it on the table saw, or in my case I prefer to cut it with the same X-carve. Unfortunately this is very time consuming due to the number of passes you have to calculate. But in my case I use the machine to make my projects. Not as a production line. So the time factor is not a problem.

Maybe center the design in the middle of the software? You should be able to center image on the stock in the software that would help you center the image.

Seems kinda weird that they don't assemble any of it... Like, I could never figure out how to put it together. The controller.... Why isn't it already put together and packed in a box to just have to put the big pieces together.... Eeekkk!! Too intimidating for me. I definitely don't have the skills for that. Or the patience 😂
