I don't think I've heard Nightwish change key from the original song very often, but this time, they actually did! But Why? Is it a good thing or a bad thing? And what does that say about a singer's ability? 😎 Answers in the video!

Hey beautiful people! I can't reply to everybody in the comments at this point or I'd be spending my days doing that (instead of creating new music and new videos) but I want to thank you all for leaving them over here! I try to read them, and I wished I could answer to everyone personally but I'm only one against a whole army 😆 You guys are amazing though, and I feel really encouraged by your positivity! A few things came up often: #1: It's very much possible that dropping the song is just a happy by-product of a guitar tuning decision, but nonetheless I stand with thinking that this key really sounds great in Floor voice, and allows her to strain herself less, so I'm very much approving this change for her! #2: My stuff might have become a bit more nerdier, and I'm very happy you guys are liking it. I'm starting to think I could start making videos that are a bit more general on some of the things I mention only very quickly, and some general concepts about the singing voice etc so you guys can be better equipped to understand what I'm talking about a bit deeper. I wouldn't frame them as tutorials, but rather as objective "this is how things work or are called" sort of videos. Let me know if you think it's a sort of video you'd like to watch from me!!! Hope you guys are staying safe and I see you in the next one!

You would probably have to put in a few seconds of videos and that would be a lot of work (Many people need to listen to understand what the technical terms mean). And of course, you would have to put a lot of these little snippets with the (oh, no) 3 nightwish singers. That would definitely be the 3rd World War. LOL Yes and no. YES I would like you to do that (I like the technical part in music, so Floor has more to offer), but NO if you are going to take up so much of your time. It has to be pleasurable for you and only then is it justified. Your covers are beautiful, but your authorial music is beautiful. I liked your version of Within Temptation during Live, last weekend. Nightwish has transposed all of the songs that were released before Century child, because then Emppu and Marco doesn't have to have 5 instruments (3 is enough now) on tour for example Emppu should have D-tuning guitar + back up, E-tuning guitar + back up and one extra guitar for warming up in backstage. All of the songs that came after Wishmaster are played in D-tuning and the first three albums are in E-tuning so I'm pretty sure, that it is the reason why the have lowered old songs with one whole step. Also Troy's pipes are tuned to D, but I agree that some of these songs are more comfortable to sing a bit lower like this one. Anyways great reaction and I hope you are feeling great and stay healthy 😊

Nightwish have confirmed publicly more than once that this is the primary reason they play that older material a step down live. It's mostly a happy coincidence that transposing them one step lower makes them suit Floor's vocal range better.

First of all...Hello. First time viewer. Secondly...Man, some of these comments are kind of mean! I'm a relatively new Nightwish fan. I listened to a little Nightwish in the early 2000's, but life and other interests took precedence. Floor Jansen is actually the reason I have become a fan. The new album is FANTASTIC, by the way. Now, for the reason I'm commenting...being somewhat of a veteran stage performer AND a metal/rock fan from way back (years before you were born, I would assume), it's not uncommon for bands to drop the tuning for live shows. My band only dropped tuning a half step, but that made a world of difference when we were covering, say, Iron Maiden, because we always played four 1 hour sets in a night. When we opened for Dokken, Great White, Lynch Mob and Skid Row (all different shows) and I only had to sing a 45-55 minute set, it was liberating because I could put everything into one short performance knowing I didn't have to save anything for the rest of the night. Now, if i had a 90 minute set to sing, 5 nights a week for the next 2 years, I would definitely be asking the band to give me a break and tune down that other half step. If you go back and listen to studio tracks by DIO and then compare to their live performances, they dropped the tuning as much as a whole step, like Nightwish has with this song. I know a LOT of bands did that back in the day because of the strain on the singer to maintain their voice during the grind of a drawn out tour (especially considering the hard lifestyle that was all too common with bands back then). The fact that Nightwish transposed some songs to make tech easier is an interesting one, and something I had never considered. That's a very good idea and makes a lot of sense. Anyway, I enjoyed your reaction AND your analysis. :-) ~ Chris

Hello Elvann, that has been again a very interesting analysis from you! As a die hard Nightwish fan I've heard all these songs a lot of times before, but now I can state two things... the first is that Floor brightens up and even improves almost every old song from the Tarja era, like when you take out a precious old car and give him a new furnish and a motor tuning...You can see it in Tuomas' face how he enjoys the way these songs sound with Floor...And the second point is that you, dear Elvann make the most profound and yet entertaining reactions to Nightwish! I always learn something new about their songs, that's awesome! Keep on the great work, always a pleasure to watch you:-)

HI Elvann!, nice review/reaction to this song... What I liked is how they (the band and Floor) gave a more metal-ish sound to the song, and as you say, how they adjusted the song to fit the needs for her... Floor's style is quite different from Tarja's, and I love the fact that Floor never tried to copy or emulate Tarja, I believe that wouldn't work well...all of us (the band and fans) are very happy with the outcome in this epic concert.. See you in the next one!

and for me it suffers exactly the same as it did with Tarja. If you don't know the lyrics you have no idea what they are when the song is sung live which for me is a shame. concerning the key change . i think its more a guitare thing than anything. they used to play in standard guitar tuning in their early stuff. they switched to a 1 step down tuning with century child ( if i remember correctly ) . with tarja they used to switch guitars for their older songs ( in the end of an era show you can notice emppu switching between the purple and the white guitar) . since they got floor they stopped switching guitars and play everything in their newer tuning ( at least on every songs i've checked ) . which is sometimes questionable in my opinion . in stargazers for example , i really think that floor would have been better in the original key

  • @kerimmejdoub1381

Actually they kept to the keychange since Anette. Floor was just a stand in at first, but they already had it in that key. @@ZHSCP47 you are probably right about that, i am not that technical about things. But my point was that they made the keychanges before Floor joined. They sure didn't change it during a tour just to suit Floor's voice better, she is also more the type of singer that adapts to the song and the band instead of they adapting to what she is able to achieve vocally.

I'm going to revisit my comments on other pages, Tarja and Floor are friends. Floor has said in the past that they communicate frequently. I feel that they both have had an influence on each other. I listen to Tarja now and I feel that she has developed more Floor like aspects(she seems to belt a bit more than she used to) and at the same time Floor became more Tarja.I can almost imagine Floor calling Tarja, and going, how do I sing this one?) At the same time it's useful to remember how Floor joined the band and that most of the first years songs were learned during sound checks, I'm sure much was done out of expediency. This performance was 10 months into her tenancy, all of it, on tour.

This made me keep thinking of Anette. There was a post-Nightwish interview with her in which she said that Tuomas kept nagging her to sing the high notes at the end of The Poet and the Pendulum live and she'd keep telling him that she couldn't do it. You can hear/watch her try to do it in the Sydney performance (2007 or 2008) and fail. But he kept telling her, "You can, you can!", and she kept working on it, off and on, and often changing the melody on the fly to avoid it, but she eventually got there and could predictably perform it in 2012. Anyway, my point is that if they were open to transposing music for the singer, it seems like they would have done so for Anette. The fact that Dark Passion Play was out of Anette's keys was a recurring topic in interviews prior to Imaginaerum.

Tuning the song down a step is more convenient for guitar and bass and allows Floor to sing in chest voice or a chest/mix belt. Tarja sings this song in head voice, which is aided by the higher key. The highest note in Tarja's live version of this song is a G5. Both Tarja and Floor can sing considerably higher. In Phantom of the Opera they hit a D6 at the end. The song sounds very different in chest/mix vs. head voice. I like each for different reasons: the purity of head voice vs. the power and drive of chest/mix belting. It's nice to have both versions.

Pretty sure they changed the keys of a few songs like this one (and Wishmaster when they added the new orchestral parts too maybe? Can't remember off the top of my head...) during the Anette era and have kept them this way ever since then. Besides, it would have been really weird and a pain in the neck to suddenly start playing the songs in the original key when Floor joined the band part way through an ongoing album tour cycle when the band and crew have already rehearsed it and performed it this way, it's a bit late to suddenly change things by that point... but they seem to have kept it this way more recently too, so maybe they just like the way it sounds in the newer key?

Tarja brought Floor on to perform a duet of "Over the Hills" at one of her shows in 2013 and apparently the ladies had been friends for many years. I'm wondering what the age difference is between the singers because Floor appeared to be much younger. Maybe it was the difference in style of clothing because Tarja was wearing a long dress with gothic makeup whereas Floor was wearing a short skirt with eye sparkles.

Tuomas said in an interview back then from the old songs performed by Floor , She is my sin is one of his favorite, i mean look at the funny faces he makes for the full duration of the song, he clearly enjoyed this version better than anything, i'm in the same spot i didnt even liked the original and i love this version.

If I may sum it up for you: Floor could have sung this in its original key had she wished to sing it in her operatic head voice. Instead she wanted to use a belting mix, which required a lower key. Floor has demonstrated that she can sustain very high notes in her head voice, but this was not the style she wished to use here. The lower key belting was a stylistic choice.

Slowly over the videos after this, she had several "Holy Sh*t! moments that Floor definitely has much much more talent, training, learned vocal skills, which allow her to sing any style, super high or super low, and more crayons in her coloring box than Crayola makes. It's no surprise you caught it but the quick head voice flip shows how in-control she is. But I will say she did belt that note in the prior phrase, so I wonder why she did that on the 2nd? Is it hitting the hard "e" sound that high? Your insight into vocals being that you are a great vocalist is the reason why your reactions actually... well... have a point. Lol. It's always interesting when someone starts a sentence with: It's really not a criticism, but ... Because then you can almost be sure it's a criticism that is just trying to be wrapped up a bit. For it is probably a criticism from Elvan that Floor does not sing the song, as Tarja did, or as Elvan's classic sound ideal dictates. And thankfully for that. For Floor does not usually sing based on a classic sound ideal. She is primarily a rock and metal singer. And here the ideal is not that it should sound like you could easily sing louder tones if it were. The ideal is often rather that it must sound both strained, pinched, hard and difficult. Remember that rock and metal has a lot of roots in blues, which is precisely the music of pain. So - pardon my french - it is rubbish to say that Floor should think that "Fortunately the song is not higher than this". I wonder if John Lennon also thought about that when he squeezed and strained through Twist & Shout ("Fortunately the song is no higher than this")? Or when Janis Joplin painfully sang through Piece Of My Heart? And lots of other examples of rock music then and now. Precisely in contrast to the classic ideal of clarity and purity.

I didn't understand anything from this, but no, it's not criticism, I do a disclaimer because people take observations for criticism on KZread and it's really annoying to feel like I need to justify when I decide to breath between my phrases. Putting a disclaimer is basically a reflection on how KZread comments can be toxic for KZreadrs. People just like to interpret things that I say in the worst possible way. But hey, Floor doesn't sing it like Tarja. That's a good observation 👍

@@ElvannReacts What is it you don't understand - is it really anything? Don't you understand, that it is very much a matter of preferences og ideals? And sound ideals that can determine how to evaluate a singer's way of singing. And if I use a classic song ideal to judge, for example, John Lennon's voice, then it makes no sense. Because from that point of view, it's a terrible sound he has in Twist & Shout. But that's exactly what it should sound like. Just like with Floor. It should sound different than, say, Tarja - because the style is different. And just sounds more strained, squeezed, etc. That's what my criticism of your way of responding to Nightwish with Floor is. You do not always judge her based on her and the genres sound ideals and thus her premises. Would you also criticize John Lennon and other rock singers in the same way - to over repeat my point?
